    Thanks for sharing your experience, sounds like Film School was amazing for you. I've been making videos since I was 15 studying BTEC Media. Went on to study Media Production at university which wasn't very helpful, I was being taught by lecturers that have never been in the industry like you warned about in your video. So I dedicated myself to reading filmmaking books, listening to filmmaking podcasts, watching UA-cam videos and making wedding and corporate videos for money. I made 2 short films during university and about a year and half later, I decided to make a short film a month and release them to UA-cam instead of wasting myself away making only wedding and corporate videos, This was my ultimate film school. I was inspired by Kubrick, Nolan and Rodriguez who made their first films on shoestring budgets and pretty much on their own.
    Luckily, I live near the city centre of Birmingham and there was already quite a small, active circle of actors that were happy to collaborate. I was doing every single role other than acting and composing music on my films. I put all my learning up to that point to the test, although I didn't have professional sets by any means, I learnt all the practicalities needed when putting a film together. Writing, planning & logistics, coverage, lighting, directing, sound recording, editing, colour grading, sound design, working with a composer, graphic design for posters and most importantly marketing myself. Now I'm finally finishing up my debut feature film and getting ready to submit to Sundance in September!
    Bottom line, during my research, I found there is no one path to becoming a filmmaker, Scorsese went to film school, Nolan couldn't get into film school, Spielberg just snuck on to the backlot of Universal and got cosy with the editors there. I would implore anyone looking to become a filmmaker to research all the ways of becoming one or how other filmmakers they admire got started and then choose what's best for yourself given your situation and the cards life has dealt you.

    I'm so glad i discovered your channel, you make really fascinating and really awesome content. I'm just applying for a film school and these types of videos make me really excited about it, while also making me realize that making films is more important that getting accepted into film school (in my country, it's a bit of a hustle, so i am quite nervous). Anyway, stay awesome ;-)

    Im 22 and I’m considering it but sometime I feel like I’m too old or worried that the school I could go to isn’t good enough, any words of advice?

      22! You're young! Do it! Don't let age alone stop you. As for the school, make sure it's a good one that feels right.

    Hello! I’m from Mexico and I’m looking for different options to study filmmaking abroad. Any school/program in particular you recommend?
    I already have a bachelor’s degree in art. Do you think I could somehow make it into a master’s in filmmaking? or are my chances better in a 1 year program or something similar?
    Thaks a lot!

    Sir, I'm wanting to chat by video with you. I tried to contact you via the guy who was 'script editor' on your film 'The Manor' - which is a film without a script (but maybe many stage directions. I'm on Face book in my own name and on Twitter as 'Arthur Crown' on Twitter which is my 'Writers Guild of Great Britain' nom de plume or 'pen-name'

    about to do my gcses and I really want to follow a career down film and drama, I have loads of screenplays which I'd love to make into blockbuster type films, is film school really difficult for filming projects or are supplied with the equipment, budget, etc.

    • @TheFilmGraduates
      @TheFilmGraduates  5 років тому

      You can't just make whatever you want and it's likely they will not offer you any money. You'll learn very very quickly that most of what you've written is probably rubbish. Unless you're some genius... which you might be. If you're scripts are blockbuster good then why would you need film school? ;)

    • @Roadkill-Films
      @Roadkill-Films 5 років тому

      Well that was bit harsh but its cos I'm still in high school about to go into college so im trying to get as much help and knowledge as I can. What "special requirements" are needed for the screenplays for them too be "not rubbish"? I know there's different types of screenplays required for your project such as production and shooting scripts but what else would be required?

    • @Roadkill-Films

      No offense taken by the way ✌

    • @TheFilmGraduates
      @TheFilmGraduates  5 років тому

      @@Roadkill-Films No offense was intended 🙌 there arent any special requirements, a script just has to be good, Interesting, rich in character, plot and believable dialogue. If you've managed to nail those down at 16 years old then you're in a good place.

      Well not to brag on myself but I feel like I got a good chance there😊, anyway, thank you for your feedback, hopefully this'll help me in the following years.
