Old school farmers didn't have tractors or other vehicles to plow their fields. They did it through grit, blood, toil, tears and sweat, dawn to dusk. And they never complained. Like real men. They drank raw whole milk, ate free range eggs, porridge and whole grain bread. So it's no wonder they were so strong.

Yes, today's farmers do long hours but all of them in my area are a few stone overweight and drive tractors to do everything. They wouldn't recognise a pitchfork or scythe if it were handed to them but that's progress. A 60 year old, 20 stone farmer with a heart condition can harvest more hay or silage in his tractor in 16 hours than ten athletic young men could by hand in a week.

i’m a 15 year old starter on the varsity football team. i’m 5’11 190 and i bench 295 and squat 425. i was a pulling guard and i had to block this dude named lane. he’s about 17 6’1 160. he looks like a stick. i ran into him got my hands on him and he literally grabbed me by my pads, lifted me into the air and threw me to the side like 5 yards. i was so confused because he isn’t strong on compound lifts at all. and i realized he was a farmer. so i looked up this video😂

Being friends with many tradespeople/Laborers/Farmers and the like, those fuckers terrify me in the same way fighters do, their work (in my opinion) is probably the key to the hidden away niche of strength endurance and athletic carryover
What I mean by strength endurance is mostly based off of how Garage Strength defines it, as explosive, sustained full exertion of the body over long durations of time (think crossfit, wrestling, etc.) and he actually does a pretty good job at intro'ing people to said concept as it seems to be basically swept under the rug outside of maybe specialized training for some sports
Farmers and just nutty, I also remember reading a bit of Maxic's book (old time strongman, and the main fellow behind the concept of "mind-muscle connection") where he talked about how if laborers were able to focus their minds for a couple minutes at a time specifically on the muscles being worked on during their basically autonomous movements, they would develop said muscles at a much faster rate both in terms of size and strength but also in muscle recruitment (leading to better muscle efficiency and more overall usable strength)
If I could impart some knowledge onto other people here that are looking to develop farmer strength, I would recommend looking into old time strongmen training philosophy (why they did what they did and what they targeted when training) and athletic training for general carryover (e.g sports like wrestling, crossfit, football, rugby etc.) as well as a brief stint with grip training (part of the secrets of strongmen) and strength endurance (part of athletic training) as these should be much closer to a more in depth parallel training program to develop farmer's strength (parallel as in, it should set you to achieve similar results as possibly a farmer)

@Guy Whose opinions will offend you Indeed and it appears that within the context of military fitness (also diluted down to "general fitness") falls within those parameters
You want your body used to being loaded with weights dynamically to prevent overexertion of the muscles when put into awkward load bearing positions (e.g reaching over to pick something up at your side) and you want your muscles to be able to do those coordinated lifts for long durations of time
Bodybuilding-centred training or "gym fitness" nowadays is meant to be hyper focused towards getting the aesthetics that you want, it was never meant to be multi applicable to the rigours of labour and also doesn't keep in mind the concept of joint longevity
That being said, the basic exercises for gym fitness, basic weightlifting are fantastic for rehab for people that are beginning their journey or those that are detrained looking to go back in
As you progress however, you need to really start branching out to more modern day athletic training with the mindset similar to that of the military where endurance and longevity of strength is key, not focusing on purely max strength per isolated list or focusing on hypertrophy (aggressive muscle development)

Thinking to be stronger is interesting. I'll have to look at this. I think there is some truth there

@Guy Whose opinions will offend you I've tried meditation before and honestly, nothing keeps me less stressed then working out 4-5 days a week. We will see how that changes with age. Thanks for the feedback.
