Construction has hit a wall since the interest rates have gone up.
The subbies know there are more tradesmen than jobs.
As a bricklayer I have gone from £235 per day to the last job was £187.50 per day, an odd number I know but he wouldn't pay for the one and only half hour break we had.
Yes houses are desperately needed but the big house builders have scaled right back on releasing plots to build because they aren't selling.
The South of England is over run by Romanians and Albanians all claiming to be qualified bricklayers. They are not. Houses are coming down because they don't do the basics like fit wall ties.
Brown envelopes are flying around to get contracts and others small envelops are being sold on sites which is the real reason they are there. It is a total mess.

I've just had work done on my home. Carpenter £350 day, plumber £375, electrician £350 and stone mason / builder £275. We have a real shortage of trades around Bath and you end up waiting ages for them. Some are so busy they can't even be bothered to quote!

Yup, I hear ya! My local tame sparky who is the same age as me, has recently retired to the south of Spain - house all paid off and now renting it out for some passive income. I've still got another 15 years left on my mortgage!

Hi, I've just got home after a day at the Men's shed workshop I'm helping to setup . Found a coffin plane in a box of donated tools - it needs restoring, any tips please. Cheers Paul ( Cornwall)

So simple to restore simple flatten sole on a flat piece of 120grit paper.. hone the plane iron and chip breaker... Clean the rest using linseed oil and wirewool wipe clean and finish with paste wax. DON'T Varnish 🤠 enjoy your find

But if brits were to pursue a career in one of the trades, they wouldn't be able to moan about foreigners coming over and stealing all the jobs 😂

the locals cant afford to get training in those areas. We have similar situation here in Australia. Education is too expensive.

I have a few friends who are professional bartenders who went to London for work years ago. They came back to Prague within 6 months. They had good paying jobs at high end bars but still ended up broke. I imagine it would be similar for trades. Even higher wages can’t account for much higher cost of living.
