  • This is the trailer for the movie Indochine (1992). Many people find it too long or too melodramatic. It is however one of my favorite movies. The film takes place in French Colonial Indochina. It stars Catherine Deneuve, Vincent Perez, Linh Dan Pham, and is directed by Regis Wargnier.

    This is one of my fav movies: Catherine Deneuve should won the Oscar, I have never seen a better perfomance from her, in any other film- Here she is PERFECT- Of course all the cast & surroundings are a delight- In my humble opinion the best 90,s film-

    I was so fortunate to watch this movie last week, while spending the night on a "wreck" in Halong Bay. As we watched the film we would look outside the cabin and see the same scenes as on the screen. A great film and an unforgettable night

    Yes, it was nominated for the best foreign language film Oscar and Catherine Deneuve as best actress in a leading role. It won the first one (and for me, Catherine won, too ;-)).

    (Continued) Many aspects of this film displays exemplifies orientalism. Despite Camille who was raised to be french, we were not allowed to view a deep view of the Vietnamese. This film was probably not intended for a Vietnamese audience. In the film, they are portrayed as cold hearted and mysterious. Somewhere Tanh's mother says something like "I don't understand you french and your love. What's important is indifference" However that's not true. I could go into more detail.

    The movie's called Indochina because it's referred to 50s Indochina, a French colony, a word that's stuck in French people's mind. Until 1954, people just had no idea what's Vietnam. You just couldn't rename the movie "Vietnam", because it may refer to ANOTHER Vietnam: The American's Vietnam war we all have known. And, honestly, the French are not all thieves, some-yes, but not all. And, don't be so rude. I am a Vietnamese and we Vietnamse hate rude people.

    Well for starters, it is highly unlikely that a white European would've adopted a indochinese girl in the 1930s set in colonial Vietnam. Also unlikely that all her closest friends were Indochinese. In 1992 the world was going through an era of anti-racism and the brutality of the french was glossed over however I do acknowledge some degree of brutality but not enough. Some of the subtitles for Vietnamese were wildly inaccurate unless I heard really wrong.

    Please! Everything has its own fate. That's not what we can or could do. Chinese, Vietnamese Communists, American, or French. 100 years in French Colonial, Vietnamese had suffered so much pains, no words can describe it. We can't compare it to Hong kong or Macau... That's under the British Colonial.. Vietnamese had so much suffered from a thousand years from the north( Chinese) and 100 years from French. Without Vietminh revolution and Vietnamese all stood up for long fight and kicked out the invaders, I can't think how worse it could be today. Look at the history, and go through all documents, events, and medias, There is no such as independent as a whole country as today. Things always change as time moving forward. Living in past , we are making our own coffin, we are not in present and would never being in the future. Viet Nam is a beautiful country with many amazing natural landscapes. Vietnam is changing and opening to be better daily. It needs more time joining comfortably with the rest of modern world.

    I always wondered what Vietnam (Indochina) would be like if the French weren't ousted and ruled longer. Would Vietnam be like Hong Kong or Macau, with heavy European influences? Regardless, it still be better than it is today and wouldnt be destroyed wasteland that the Communists turned it into.

    • @azndork87
      @azndork87 9 років тому +1

      What I am saying is, hypothetically if the French still ruled Vietnam and there wasn't a war, VN could have been very European influenced and could have been one of the Asian super powers. But the communists took over in 1975 and turned Vietnam into a third word country who is finallyyyy and slowly being industrialized and westernized up to par with surrounding countries. Is that still too complicated for you to comprehend or visualize?

      Yeh if you are one of those who would let foreign invaders come to your country, take over your land and food, and make you work as slave for them, then I have nothing to say. Vietnam was mostly destroyed by the french and the us, those who were unwelcome in the first place. Still remember the US army bombing Agent Orange which still leave millions of people being intoxicated and lands being unable to cultivated until nowadays? And the heavy ban on economic trade from the US up until the 90s? We have come a long way from building back up a society which was destroyed by foreign invaders and are doing well enough. Thanks for your concern.

      +Tien Hung Phan I'm not sure I agree with azndork87, but I think it's quite clear he was talking about French Indochina and not the US intervention in Vietnam after the French left. I think in his imaginings there would never have been a US intervention, because there would never have been a Communist revolution in the country. Of course, that's not what happened, so we can speculate on what might have happened till the cows come home, but we'll never really know how different things could have panned out.

    This is the worst movie I have watched in my life. Ever. And I have watched movies from all over the world. I have never seen a movie like this. Usually when u watch a movie there is at least ONE character u can sympathize with whether its a bad or good person. What character was that in the movie? They are all despicable people. Yeah the scenery is nice but the characters and the story line just kills it. I wanna meet the guy who wrote the story and have a long talk with him.
