Heads up, folks! I decided to create a new group on Facebook for WML, a much more suitable platform for in depth discussions of the show and miscellaneous related posts than Google+ will ever be. If you're on FB, please come by!

I'm an old man and remember Rosemary Clooney on TV as a kid'; my mom really liked her. When I got old, I lived in Las Vegas and she was scheduled to appear, not in the casinos, but at UNLV in their theater. She came out and sat down to perform, and told the audience that she had 2 rows of seats saved for her nephew George, who was coming with some friends--they were in town filiming Ocean's 11. She sang for about an hour and it was amazing--as old as she was and all of her health issues didn't stop her from performing. George never showed.up.
Rosemary was a Wonderful Woman. Shame on George. He could have come on his own. And then everyone else in the Audience could have moved up a row or 2..
One dinner party in old NYC! That's all I want with all of these gorgeous people. What an adorable, eclectic bunch! 😍🤗
Nice thought, but I would not be disappointed if Bennett was not in attendance.
Oh please..they were all damn snobs!!!

I’m with you, Beth. What fun it would be.
I would not mind Bennett; my father worked for Random House.
I think this is the only time I've seen the panel NOT guess the mystery challenger. And I have watched dozens of these. Such a simple formula, but so entertaining. Of course, the concept would never work these days. TV, music, movies, all entertainment, so FRACTURED. "Influencers", "stars" of the bazillion cable shows, reality TV performers - it all makes my head spin. When this program aired, stars were just that = true STARS. No wonder I spend my nights combing YT for wonderful moments of the past.
Rosemary Clooney was at her prettiest at that time.
--> I was a kid, madly in love with her. Yes, George. Some boys fantasized about your aunt. It happens.
@@DavidBrown-jk2pm
I hate to burst your bubble, but you were not alone!
@Bruno Zauhar
Absolutely beautiful lady indeed.
She looked better in the fifties She is still thin here though.
I love her singing, "Sway" is probably my favorite song she did, so sexy!
Rosemary Clooney was a wonderful singer with an incredibly warm and sensuous voice. I believe that she struggled with various things in later life, but came back fighting...God bless her....
She is George Clooney’s aunt.
@@cmlazarHe is her nephew. She was so much more than his aunt.
Just read through some of the comments. So judgemental and critical of people none personally knew. So true of our current world. I have to stop reading these stupid comments. Just ruins the enjoyment of this wonderfully entertaining show I am so grateful to @What's My Line has posted.
Rosemary Clooney looks so glamorous, healthy, and happy here (except when Bennett asks if she's Patti Page, her chief rival)...yet she was going through a hellish personal life at the time, and within a few short years, would suffer an almost complete mental breakdown and be institutionalized. She battled back and forged a new career as a superlative jazz singer and nightclub performer; I saw her at her very last live engagement, and even though she was extremely heavy and in poor health, which contributed to making her set extremely short, she still wove vocal magic.
What was the venue, Todd ?
From her commercials for Coronet paper towels in her later years, I could tell that Rosie had gotten heavy; however, she could still sing, and she sang a lot better than many of today's so-called "pop divas"!
not heard about her troubles....if beautiful successful people can suffer mental health issues then i suppose anyone can
She was an AMAZING woman, and, oh so talented!
@@donnacook8994 And always seemed nice. In her 1955 appearance she seemed a lot happier
One of the funniest episodes I think I've seen, the cow segment especially. Arlene was hilarious. Love these old shows. Thanks so much for posting.
1013pka My pleasure-- glad you enjoyed it. :)
+1013pka - first time Ii've heard the audience applaud a line of questioning, almost like a stand up routine by arelene.

One of the rare times that decorum on WML went completely out the window for John Daly and the entire panel during the second segment.
Arlene is cracking me up! And Dorothy's sense of humor must have been MIA during this part of the episode!
Thank you for this delightful impression of our one and only! As for her trip to France: July 25 Rosemary flew into London ,en route to Monte Carlo, where she was met by José Ferrer whom she had divorced only recently / On July 26, Thursday. Rosemary was in Monte Carlo where she sang at a Red Cross benefit at Princess Grace’s invitation. Joe Ferrer was also there. Newspapers taked about a possible reconciliation, but Rosemary told them “There are five good reasons why Ferrer and I met at the airport: “The children, who are at present staying with my mother in Kentucky.”
I loved the rapid exchange of cattle-related puns between John and Dorothy, beginning around 13:10 -- they were all having fun with that one! (And surprisingly, Bennett didn't say a word.) :D
It's a form of comedy especially fitting for the subject. After all, puns are known as _low_ humor.
Besides, if Bennett had interrupted with one of his cheesy puns, he would have ruined the moo-d, requiring him to hide in udder defeat. One can only milk so many puns out of one subject. And I'd butter stop now before I get creamed.
groan. Well said.

😂
Rosemary Clooney was quite beautiful at this point in her life. Even in her later years, she always had such an engaging smile.
Arlene: "On this panel we eat everything, let me tell you", is just hilarious! 🤣🤣👍
It's so refreshing to see this show but then again I'm 86 years old. I love how dressed up they are and how polite they are
l love the celeb guests.....this is a rarity when they don't get the celeb
I am much younger than you, but I find these shows to be very informative and intriguing. I hope you are still doing well.
Ted Bundy was very polite and dressed well
@@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath Not sure if you meant to be funny but I think it's hilarious
@Janette I'm twenty years younger, but feel exactly the same way! 🥰💐
Rosemary Clooney appeared in ER (with George Clooney) in 1994. Naturally 😊
In every instance I've ever seen where it is "9 down and 1 to go", and it comes to Dorothy - she always passes. For some reason Dorothy never wanted to be the person who got the 10th wrong answer causing the panel to lose the game. She did it again here with Rosemary Clooney in the mystery guest spot
I think Dorothy had another episode introducing Cerf. Smaller but noticeable. it wasn't any sneeze either.
Arby Fatbuckle ~ I noticed that...also noticed a slight slurring a few other times as well.
Right? She seems a bit off, maybe she wasn't feeling well
@@LazyIRanch people have a theory she had mini strokes.. maybe even mini seizures .
@@ellemathews9840 that would make sense. I remember there was a news anchor a few years ago who had a weird episode of speaking gibberish while on air and I think that it was a mini stroke
@@LazyIRanch I wonder if they would have known it was a sign of a mini stroke back then and if she was ever treated for it ? I also wonder if this had something to do with her death.. they didn't do much of an autopsy after she came up positive for her medication.. but idk hee death was quite mysterious considering the details around it and what she was investigating. Also the fact that the FBI got involved with her death and all of her files were missing. Anyways.. loved this show and sad that all the people on it have been gone for a while now .
If you'd like to hear some fresh, NEW songs by Rosey that had never been previously released until a few months ago -- showcased in NEW musical settings supplied by some of today's top musicians (such as from the Atlanta jazz scene), you should check out a CD called "Rosemary Clooney: Rare & Unreleased."
Unlike that expensive 4 CD boxed set that was issued on Ms. Clooney that just has her dry vocals and that hideous organ predominating (yuk!), the producers of this new CD have managed to track down their own sources for some incredible performances from when Rosey was in peak vocal form in the mid to late 1950s and early '60s. Her voice is unbelievable…rich and clear and smooth. WOW! She never sounded better.
The sound quality is STUNNING. They have added just the right touch of reverb and then put together some tasteful new instrumental backings like sax, clarinet, flute, trombone, new percussion, strings, etc. This is a very classy product and even the photos of her are gorgeous.
This CD covers 3 distinct periods (unlike the box set): Big Band, the pop period (with songs she never recorded commercially), and finally some exciting live performances. You owe it to yourself to at least look at this because you can listen to some audio samples on a Facebook page. You can find it here: good-music-store.myshopify.com/products/rosemary-clooney-rare-unreleased
The CD mentioned in the post above is out of stock, but they have three delightful 10-minute samples to listen to. Thanks so much!
This is about as "giddy" as I've ever seen Arlene, and it appears as if Dorothy has matched her (cf. her introduction of Bennett). There was a Xmas show (though it had been taped the week before) with Tony Randall that comes to mind as about the only show I've seen that's comparable. A good time has been had by all....
+Robert Melson Dorothy always looked like she was trying to keep a sneeze from happening. She should have went through with the sneeze to dispel drunkenness.
Arlene was so funny in this.
Drunk
@@ellemathews9840 She may have been "lit" but comedically she was "on fire."
Rosemary's nephew George was born in 1961 and thus too young to watch his aunt on WML.
It is always fun to watch when the guest stumps the panel which by the way were very good at what they did, especially with mystery guests.
Read Rosemary's memoir....as I recall, its title is 'Girl singer' --- it's a good one.
Rosemary Clooney completely fooled the panel this time - unlike her first time as Mystery Guest (mid-1950s, I think), when her distinctive laugh gave her away.
Great episode!!!!!
Rosemary Clooney was the mentor and idol of understated mega-star of modern jazz singing Diana Krall!
Arlene Francis: "It probably wouldn't interest anyone but a bull."..hahahaha! Hilarious!
She was very funny and quick-witted.
They seemed to be having a good ole time in that second round
"Live from New York". ? I didn't know WMLnwas broadcast live. I've watched countless episodes and this is the first time I ever noticed that announcement in the intro.
If a guest's occupation has something to do with cows you now it will be funny - after seeing most of availble episodes I think everybody agree that is a general rule ;-)
Dorothy sounds different when introducing Bennett Cerf
I think so too.
She was struggling, that's why. It's uncomfortable to watch. Poor Dorothy.
@@davidsanderson5918 She did this on another episode but I think she was trying to contain a sneeze.
STROKE
Dorothy doesn't seem impaired to me, she seems emotionally upset and on the verge of tears a lot of the time. I think she and Cerf were arguing and Arlene is trying to be more "on" because of the tension.
Rosemary could belt out a ballad.
HAAAPPPYYYYYY HOLIDAAAYYYSS, Arlene!! LOL 💖🍸🍹🥂🍾
More drinks than usual in this episode
19:37 You can totally see nephew George in her face
Love this episode.
Wow! Rosemary looks slimmer and younger here than in her 1955 appearance on the show.
Better in 1955.
This was the second time in early 1962 WML episodes where Arlene seemed . . . . uh -- flushed. This may account for why she was so memorably funny with the second contestant.
***** I'm thinking "flushed" is a euphemism for (probably) being a bit tipsy.
Arlene is one of the people from history I would MOST like to go back in time and have a few cocktails with!
Apparently, Martin Gabel was quite a heavy drinker, and I doubt that Arlene was a teetotaler. But even though she definitely seems "tipsy," she's even funnier than usual, and as charming as ever.
What's My Line?
She may also have been focusing partly on opening night in OLD ACQUAINTANCE the next night. Let's cut her some slack.
Rowan Smith The accident was the following year, actually.

Psssst...beforeourveryeyes....The high-necked, polka-dot dress that Arlene is wearing in this episode is the same one she wore a year earlier on the June 4, 1961 episode. What's My Line? - John Sellers; Phil Silvers; Joey Bishop [panel] (Jun 4, 1961)
Since cattle have feet, not hands, shouldn't the second challenger have more properly been called a cow "pedicurist"?
To take your observation on step further, so to speak, cows have hooves instead of feet. So the contestant was actually a hooficurist.
@@mikejschinActually, cows have feet. According to Wikipedia, "A (/ˈhuːf/ or /ˈhʊf/), plural (/ˈhuːvz/ or /ˈhʊvz/) or /ˈhʊfs/, is the tip of a toe of an ungulate mammal, strengthened by a thick and horny keratin covering."
@@jackkomisar458 Does that mean hooficurist can't be a word? Though your information is appreciated, it is sorely disappointing to find that my attempt to expand the English language comes to nought. lol
@@mikejschin Yes, there is no reason why it cannot be a word. But cows have feet.
@@mikejschin Your attempt to expand the English language has met the agony of de feet.
In later years she was heavy and when she got off the stage, she shook the floor, this was at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. A very good singer of course. She had a trumpet player that was great. Later I heard him many time on KJAZ radio. I'll have to look up his French sounding name. It sounds like Martin bushay The spelling in incorrect of course.
Probably "Bouchey."
Arlene was tipsy...but in a really sweet and delightful way!
So much for integrity …
Having grown up during this period, I can tell the younger generation that it was considered Ill-mannered at this time to NOT wolf whistle even the slightly attractive ladies! Hard to believe, huh?
Tom Saltsman • Yes and I just corrected a commenter above, I hope!
Indeed hard to believe. i guess it has something to do also with age. Because John Daly for example is not a potential whistler i guess. .
nothing wrong with a wolf whistle
Really ? NOT..was NEVER considered ill-mannered...EVER..but very Illl mannered and disrespectful...in MY memory
@@chaimbar1171 it's not true
I can't believe the panelists had such trouble with Rosemary. Although, being mistaken for Connie Francis and Patti Page is high praise indeed!
Interesting that water pollution was talked about back then. Maybe had to do with Rachel Carson's upcoming book about ecology.
John Daly has always been a champion for pollution problems.
Love tipsy Arlene!
John Daly talks about acid rain in 1962.
The president had assigned him to chair the committee on water pollution - interesting that he calls it "mine acid raining".
@@sdacj mine acid draining?
One thing that always got to me about John Daly is after the game is over with the guest. the guest very seldom gets to explain what he does. John feels he has to do it for
them.
.. that's his job.
I can't argue with that, but part of the time he didn't know what he was talking about anyway. But he was a great host.
Couldn't they have somehow afforded more seating? They had those poor guests all smooshed in together up front.
At 16:37 Dorothy's Max Factor just hardened.
buyvital
Yes, she seemed positively dumbstruck by John's explanation and momentarily unable to move so much as a facial muscle! This whole segment with the cow manicurist was hilarious, and that was yet another moment, among many, that literally made me laugh out loud.
Roger Thornburgh Justvintedge h
Martin Gabel's question, "You have nothing to do with branding," should have gotten a yes. I'm surprised John Daly missed that one. He's usually right on top of questions like that.
She's such a favorite of mine
Rosemary Clooney's face never changed.
What a Doll Rosemary Clooney Was!!!!!!!!
Great epi of WML!
Love Rosemary !!
Rosemary does look a lot like Sondra Locke who played her in a documentary.
Amazing how closely George resembles her
Vineland Ontario Canada ? Is that what they said ? Where the heck is that ?
Sadly, Dorothy also seems a little "flushed" during her introduction of Bennett.
maynardsmoreland I disagree.
Mahhhhtin Gabel!!!
lol "No"
Christine Jorgensen would have been an extremely good "Mystery Guest"
Who?
Rosemary has been on this show twice
Thanks captain.
All-star panel!
She fooled them! What a beautiful gal.
Mr. Daly seems to have a bit trouble with the right answers to Bennett Cerfs Question: You have nothing to do with athletics? The answer there must be a yes, but they give a no. Oddly enough nobody complains afterwards. ( around 8:40)
And second time: Martin Gabel asked the second contestant: you have nothing to do with branding? and he gets also a no. equally wrong.
But this sequence was so funny, to complain about this error would have been a bit out of place, i think.
So of course no comments about the slavery joke that Dorothy said that was very distasteful I think she put Bennett surf in a bad position with the slave owner and that she'll be in her little hole reading a book!!! that was very distasteful by Dorothy I had a lot of respect for but that has definitely just went out the window and like I said that was just horrible
"Cerf," not "Surf"", you dummy.
She was slurring so much I think we all barely understood.
All Clooneys look a like don you think?
Clooney Cloney …
Being from Colorado myself, as soon as he mentioned where he was from, I thought "This guy works with cows"
I believe John missed a double negative answer and gave Martin a "no" when "he" should have gotten a "ye"s at 15:47 when he said "You have nothing to do with branding any of these animals?". The contestant said "no", but should have said "yes I have nothing do with branding"... they all missed it!
Rosemary Clooney is George Clooney's aunt :).
Kathy Jones I'd rather say George Clooney is Rosemary Clooney's nephew.
You can see her resemblance to George.
No conferences s/b alltowed! Just play the game 😱
At 15:45 John Daly made a mistake that he makes fairly frequently. Martin Gable asked, "You have nothing to do with branding any of these animals?", and John gave him a no when he should have given him a yes. That is to say, yes, you have nothing to do with it. John often answers this kind of negative question correctly, but occasionally he disregards how the question is framed.
For some reason when I saw Mrs. Dower and her hair, I couldn't help think she reminded me of Marie Antoinette. And...Mrs. Dower seemed...a little dour....
Rosemary has good genes!
Dorothy freaking scary-looking at 13:23
Why can't this messed up world go back to decency and class like it use to be!!
One of the few times that I have seen someone kiss Dorothy and not Arlene. It's usually the other way around or they kiss them both
Dorothy looks very different tonight somehow
Love Arlene’s dress.
Dorothy looks snookered
amberola1b I disagree.
They all do.
Rosie looks great here!
Is Arlene a little "happy" here? At the beginning instead of saying she would like to introduce Martin Gabel, she says she would like to PRODUCE him! LOL!!
There is something going on with Bennett and Dorothy. And it's not good.
+Brooke Hanley Yes, indeed. Look at around 16:53 and Bennett says something to the effect of "you're worse than the other ones. Now get on with it." Yet he was laughing at Arlene a minute or so earlier. Say what you will about Dorothy but too often I get the impression she was something of a punching bag for Bennett Cerf, who was my least-favorite of the long-time panelists.
hcombs0104 I agree - Dorothy wasn’t off on some tangent or anything- Bennet was a tool sometime
hcombs0104 That doesn't sound to me like what he said. I believe he told her to ask something in particular. I'll assume the best.
Arlene was great in this one!
seemed such a lovely lady
Thank you ,I've never laughe😢😅 so hard at a cow good job old tv shows
Well dressed and such formal introducing of one another. Did you notice that some smoked during the show? Did you also notice that the cartoon characters were all male? Also the whistles at the very pretty women and not the same welcome for the less attractive? How our culture has changed since the days of What's My Line!
14:50 “wouldn’t interest anyone other than a bull”
Slave owners? Wow...
Yea smh she definitely could've kept that one .... she went on to say I'm going into my hole in read my book !!! In here's my slave owner Ven cerf wow that was a horrendous joke shame on you Dorothy kilgallen in or who ever else came up with that stupid joke ... in I can definitely say some more but in not ☝🏿😤🤷🏿♂️
The panel were all drunk on this show.
Evidently.
Was the panel drunk in this episode? Lol. They’re very merry :)
thisxeisode is 61 years old
Rosemary Clooney !!! So young and very slender here
Ive always said it but in black n white just amazing how much George Clooney looks like his Aunt R
Dorothy’s hair seems to alternate between very becoming and hideous ( like in this episode)
Martin Gabel needed a hearing aid
Well, he is Arlene’s ventriloquist’s dummy.
In 1981, I bought one of my first 45 rpm records, Shakin's Steven's "This Ole House."
My mother said that this was "an old song from my teens, by a woman named Rosemary Clooney."
My grandmother said shortly thereafter, "..and that doesn't sound like Rosemary Clooney (!)"
Apparently, Rosemary Clooney didn't like having to record this song, but was "obliged" to, or get fired.
I wonder if she liked Shakin' Steven's version better..!
Regardless, I assumed she liked the money that it brought in.
you can see george clooney in her face.
