Heads up, folks! I decided to create a new group on Facebook for WML, a much more suitable platform for in depth discussions of the show and miscellaneous related posts than Google+ will ever be. If you're on FB, please come by!

It's so refreshing to see this show but then again I'm 86 years old. I love how dressed up they are and how polite they are
l love the celeb guests.....this is a rarity when they don't get the celeb
I am much younger than you, but I find these shows to be very informative and intriguing. I hope you are still doing well.
Ted Bundy was very polite and dressed well
@@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath Not sure if you meant to be funny but I think it's hilarious
@Janette I'm twenty years younger, but feel exactly the same way! 🥰💐
One dinner party in old NYC! That's all I want with all of these gorgeous people. What an adorable, eclectic bunch! 😍🤗
Nice thought, but I would not be disappointed if Bennett was not in attendance.
Oh please..they were all damn snobs!!!

I’m with you, Beth. What fun it would be.
I would not mind Bennett; my father worked for Random House.
I'm an old man and remember Rosemary Clooney on TV as a kid'; my mom really liked her. When I got old, I lived in Las Vegas and she was scheduled to appear, not in the casinos, but at UNLV in their theater. She came out and sat down to perform, and told the audience that she had 2 rows of seats saved for her nephew George, who was coming with some friends--they were in town filiming Ocean's 11. She sang for about an hour and it was amazing--as old as she was and all of her health issues didn't stop her from performing. George never showed.up.
Rosemary was a Wonderful Woman. Shame on George. He could have come on his own. And then everyone else in the Audience could have moved up a row or 2..
Rosemary, was so glamorous and beautiful! She sang like an angel! This was a memorable episode!
I remember her with Death Valley Days. I was just a child at the time.
Those Clooneys are all so darned good looking.
I loved Rosemary! What a woman and so talented!!! What a treat to see this!!! ❤️🥰
@@steventrosiek2623 She was great in White Xmas.
If Ms. Clooney were to sing, “Come on-a my house, my house-a come on!”, I’d be there!
One of the funniest episodes I think I've seen, the cow segment especially. Arlene was hilarious. Love these old shows. Thanks so much for posting.
1013pka My pleasure-- glad you enjoyed it. :)
+1013pka - first time Ii've heard the audience applaud a line of questioning, almost like a stand up routine by arelene.
+1013pka - first time Ii've heard the audience applaud a line of questioning, almost like a stand up routine by arelene.
One of the rare times that decorum on WML went completely out the window for John Daly and the entire panel during the second segment.
Arlene is cracking me up! And Dorothy's sense of humor must have been MIA during this part of the episode!
Just read through some of the comments. So judgemental and critical of people none personally knew. So true of our current world. I have to stop reading these stupid comments. Just ruins the enjoyment of this wonderfully entertaining show I am so grateful to @What's My Line has posted.
I think this is the only time I've seen the panel NOT guess the mystery challenger. And I have watched dozens of these. Such a simple formula, but so entertaining. Of course, the concept would never work these days. TV, music, movies, all entertainment, so FRACTURED. "Influencers", "stars" of the bazillion cable shows, reality TV performers - it all makes my head spin. When this program aired, stars were just that = true STARS. No wonder I spend my nights combing YT for wonderful moments of the past.
How can I love Arlene more….??? ❤❤❤ Probably not possible 😂😊😘🙏🙏
There was also Kitty Carlyle on "To Tell The Truth".
This show is so darn funny. It's timeless 😊
It’s corny white and rigged like a parachute.
WOW!!! I never saw a young Miss Clooney. She was gorgeous.
Gorgeous in 1955.
You've never seen White Christmas?!
Not even in White Christmas ? Was very young then
@@brookehanley3659 Yes she makes an appearance that year on WML and looks beautiful and happy!
If you have a chance on yiu tube, find videos of Rosemary Clooneys tv show from the early 1950s...such exquisite glamor! And her dresses were all the talk the day after according to my mom.
Rosemary Clooney looks so glamorous, healthy, and happy here (except when Bennett asks if she's Patti Page, her chief rival)...yet she was going through a hellish personal life at the time, and within a few short years, would suffer an almost complete mental breakdown and be institutionalized. She battled back and forged a new career as a superlative jazz singer and nightclub performer; I saw her at her very last live engagement, and even though she was extremely heavy and in poor health, which contributed to making her set extremely short, she still wove vocal magic.
What was the venue, Todd ?
From her commercials for Coronet paper towels in her later years, I could tell that Rosie had gotten heavy; however, she could still sing, and she sang a lot better than many of today's so-called "pop divas"!
not heard about her troubles....if beautiful successful people can suffer mental health issues then i suppose anyone can
She was an AMAZING woman, and, oh so talented!
@@donnacook8994 And always seemed nice. In her 1955 appearance she seemed a lot happier
Rosemary Clooney was a wonderful singer with an incredibly warm and sensuous voice. I believe that she struggled with various things in later life, but came back fighting...God bless her....
She is George Clooney’s aunt.
@@cmlazarHe is her nephew. She was so much more than his aunt.
Thank you for this delightful impression of our one and only! As for her trip to France: July 25 Rosemary flew into London ,en route to Monte Carlo, where she was met by José Ferrer whom she had divorced only recently / On July 26, Thursday. Rosemary was in Monte Carlo where she sang at a Red Cross benefit at Princess Grace’s invitation. Joe Ferrer was also there. Newspapers taked about a possible reconciliation, but Rosemary told them “There are five good reasons why Ferrer and I met at the airport: “The children, who are at present staying with my mother in Kentucky.”
She was a great entertainer and a standout in "White Christmas".
Rosemary Clooney was at her prettiest at that time.
--> I was a kid, madly in love with her. Yes, George. Some boys fantasized about your aunt. It happens.
@@DavidBrown-jk2pm
I hate to burst your bubble, but you were not alone!
@Bruno Zauhar
Absolutely beautiful lady indeed.
She looked better in the fifties She is still thin here though.
I love her singing, "Sway" is probably my favorite song she did, so sexy!
Arlene: "On this panel we eat everything, let me tell you", is just hilarious! 🤣🤣👍
Proof positive that Arlene is just about the sauciest lady around!
Oh yes, but remember when Dorothy said "do you have sex .." sitting next to Groucho😁
@@kasperjoonatan6014 Dorothy actually asked the guest, “Would you say you deal with more sex..” then (after much hilarity) correcting herself as she meant “..more of one sex than the other”. Her slip of the tongue added to Groucho's double entendres references about the guest's profession.
And the drunkest...
Rosemary Clooney was quite beautiful at this point in her life. Even in her later years, she always had such an engaging smile.
rosemary clooney: big time talent!
+John Jarou - amazing vocalist, total command of melodies, notes, and projection. it's rare to see a singer with that much control.
I loved the rapid exchange of cattle-related puns between John and Dorothy, beginning around 13:10 -- they were all having fun with that one! (And surprisingly, Bennett didn't say a word.) :D
It's a form of comedy especially fitting for the subject. After all, puns are known as _low_ humor.
Besides, if Bennett had interrupted with one of his cheesy puns, he would have ruined the moo-d, requiring him to hide in udder defeat. One can only milk so many puns out of one subject. And I'd butter stop now before I get creamed.
groan. Well said.

The MOST truly funny episode ever!
Hard to believe Rosemary Clooney was the mother of 5 young children when she did this show.
Miguel( same age as me), Maria, Raffy, Gabriel and Monsita.
Love the cow epi!
The cow episode with Arlene is soooo FUNNY ! Arlene was a little UP there. I liked Dorothy's hair. Gable said "You don't brand them ?" He should have gotten a yes, not a no. Rosemary was super cute than ever. All the women looked great and that includes the Tax Collector. I'm saving this one on my FB.
Yes I laughed so hard. 😅 oh my goodness
This was the best game show ever. I love the witty banter between the panelists and contestants. What a hoot.
Rosemary Clooney appeared in ER (with George Clooney) in 1994. Naturally 😊
It is always fun to watch when the guest stumps the panel which by the way were very good at what they did, especially with mystery guests.
Rosemary Clooney was from Maysville, Kentucky, my home town. My mother played with her when they were children. I met her and she was very sweet and kind.
Arlene was so funny in this.
Drunk
@@ellemathews9840 She may have been "lit" but comedically she was "on fire."
This is about as "giddy" as I've ever seen Arlene, and it appears as if Dorothy has matched her (cf. her introduction of Bennett). There was a Xmas show (though it had been taped the week before) with Tony Randall that comes to mind as about the only show I've seen that's comparable. A good time has been had by all....
+Robert Melson Dorothy always looked like she was trying to keep a sneeze from happening. She should have went through with the sneeze to dispel drunkenness.
Everyone has such beautiful penmanship!
In every instance I've ever seen where it is "9 down and 1 to go", and it comes to Dorothy - she always passes. For some reason Dorothy never wanted to be the person who got the 10th wrong answer causing the panel to lose the game. She did it again here with Rosemary Clooney in the mystery guest spot
I think Dorothy had another episode introducing Cerf. Smaller but noticeable. it wasn't any sneeze either.
Arby Fatbuckle ~ I noticed that...also noticed a slight slurring a few other times as well.
Right? She seems a bit off, maybe she wasn't feeling well
@@LazyIRanch people have a theory she had mini strokes.. maybe even mini seizures .
@@ellemathews9840 that would make sense. I remember there was a news anchor a few years ago who had a weird episode of speaking gibberish while on air and I think that it was a mini stroke
@@LazyIRanch I wonder if they would have known it was a sign of a mini stroke back then and if she was ever treated for it ? I also wonder if this had something to do with her death.. they didn't do much of an autopsy after she came up positive for her medication.. but idk hee death was quite mysterious considering the details around it and what she was investigating. Also the fact that the FBI got involved with her death and all of her files were missing. Anyways.. loved this show and sad that all the people on it have been gone for a while now .
Arlene Francis: "It probably wouldn't interest anyone but a bull."..hahahaha! Hilarious!
She was very funny and quick-witted.
You'd think it would be easy for them to guess Rosemary Clooney: they all seem to know her well; she's been on before; and recall that it was only a couple of months ago that Dorothy, her husband, and the McGuire Sisters were going to see her after the show. The fact that she had absolutely nothing to plug is what stumped the panel. No nightclub performances, no Broadway plays, no movies, nothing. What an oddity!
Read Rosemary's memoir....as I recall, its title is 'Girl singer' --- it's a good one.
Dorothy doesn't seem impaired to me, she seems emotionally upset and on the verge of tears a lot of the time. I think she and Cerf were arguing and Arlene is trying to be more "on" because of the tension.
More drinks than usual in this episode
HAAAPPPYYYYYY HOLIDAAAYYYSS, Arlene!! LOL 💖🍸🍹🥂🍾
For those who are curious if there is any connection…Rosemary was George Clooney’s Aunt.
I kind of jumped ahead of myself with my previous comment put down before I finished watching the entire show. So I do want to add that this is one of the funniest episodes of "What's My Line" that I've watched, and I've watched a large number of them over the last few months. I laughed so hard that my throat started hurting and my eyes started watering, and this is because Arlene Francis is an absolutely funny, endearing, and lovely person who just appreciates a good laugh and having others "join in" with her. I deeply appreciate humor as its own art form, and in its use as a "lighter," less serious way to look at ourselves, and others, and at life, in general, that can bring about a smile or even a guffaw.
Rosemary's nephew George was born in 1961 and thus too young to watch his aunt on WML.
Cerf seems in a furious mood, especially with Miss Kilgallen. I wonder if her alleged betrayal of the panel’s confidence which he later mentioned happened around this time.
Could be. I notice that at 13.10 to 13.25 there is mention of "having a beef" when it is Dorothy's turn and it seems that someone off camera says something like "with Bennett" and she comments "let's leave that where it belongs". I suspect that there may have been tension between the two of them prior to the episode which could also account for the nervous "sneeze" type stumbling made during her introduction of him. But, hey, these people were effectively performing, often live, to the public most Sunday evenings and there were bound to be some background issues.
All that chumminess was phoney crap.
@LANSCID Like you were there
Love this episode.
Having grown up during this period, I can tell the younger generation that it was considered Ill-mannered at this time to NOT wolf whistle even the slightly attractive ladies! Hard to believe, huh?
Tom Saltsman • Yes and I just corrected a commenter above, I hope!
Indeed hard to believe. i guess it has something to do also with age. Because John Daly for example is not a potential whistler i guess. .
nothing wrong with a wolf whistle
Really ? NOT..was NEVER considered ill-mannered...EVER..but very Illl mannered and disrespectful...in MY memory

June 10, 1962 - about 2 months before me and my family drove to Washington DC for a vacation and we went through the White House while JFK was President.
Cool
Mr. Daly seems to have a bit trouble with the right answers to Bennett Cerfs Question: You have nothing to do with athletics? The answer there must be a yes, but they give a no. Oddly enough nobody complains afterwards. ( around 8:40)
And second time: Martin Gabel asked the second contestant: you have nothing to do with branding? and he gets also a no. equally wrong.
But this sequence was so funny, to complain about this error would have been a bit out of place, i think.
They seemed to be having a good ole time in that second round
If you'd like to hear some fresh, NEW songs by Rosey that had never been previously released until a few months ago -- showcased in NEW musical settings supplied by some of today's top musicians (such as from the Atlanta jazz scene), you should check out a CD called "Rosemary Clooney: Rare & Unreleased."
Unlike that expensive 4 CD boxed set that was issued on Ms. Clooney that just has her dry vocals and that hideous organ predominating (yuk!), the producers of this new CD have managed to track down their own sources for some incredible performances from when Rosey was in peak vocal form in the mid to late 1950s and early '60s. Her voice is unbelievable…rich and clear and smooth. WOW! She never sounded better.
The sound quality is STUNNING. They have added just the right touch of reverb and then put together some tasteful new instrumental backings like sax, clarinet, flute, trombone, new percussion, strings, etc. This is a very classy product and even the photos of her are gorgeous.
This CD covers 3 distinct periods (unlike the box set): Big Band, the pop period (with songs she never recorded commercially), and finally some exciting live performances. You owe it to yourself to at least look at this because you can listen to some audio samples on a Facebook page. You can find it here: good-music-store.myshopify.com/products/rosemary-clooney-rare-unreleased
The CD mentioned in the post above is out of stock, but they have three delightful 10-minute samples to listen to. Thanks so much!
When New York City was so Sophisticated.
boy, seeing rosemary so thin you can tell her & George r related. she was pretty.
--> Darlene Ferree. To die for.
Platinum blonde was always her best colour... She look so beautiful ..
Yes. Good looking family 4 sure.
Hahaha! This never gets old!!!!
What's wrong with Dorothy's introduction of Bennet? Is she drunk or just got it wrong?
At 15:45 John Daly made a mistake that he makes fairly frequently. Martin Gable asked, "You have nothing to do with branding any of these animals?", and John gave him a no when he should have given him a yes. That is to say, yes, you have nothing to do with it. John often answers this kind of negative question correctly, but occasionally he disregards how the question is framed.
Rosemary Clooney completely fooled the panel this time - unlike her first time as Mystery Guest (mid-1950s, I think), when her distinctive laugh gave her away.
Great episode!!!!!
19:37 You can totally see nephew George in her face
Rosemary Clooney was beautiful in White Christmas
"Live from New York". ? I didn't know WMLnwas broadcast live. I've watched countless episodes and this is the first time I ever noticed that announcement in the intro.
Rosemary Clooney had just performed at an expensive event for President Kennedy and she was close to the Kennedy family. She campaigned for Robert Kennedy and was with him at the Ambassador Hotel when he was shot. She heard the shots. She suffered a nervous breakdown about a month later, which may have had some relation to that fact. But she had abused substances before then. She was not faithful to Mel Ferrer during their two marriages according to numerous sources.
I think it was Jose Ferrari not Mel.
@@suzannegogranogo9464 yes, Jose, my error. Right facts but wrong person.
I thought it was the other way around.
José Ferrer was unfaithful to Rosemary, continuously throughout. They divorced. She had a relationship with Nelson Riddle, but Frank Sinatra advised her to break it up. When she remarried Ferrer it was the same as before he was still unfaithful with various women so she finally left him. She was a beautiful person unfortunately the pressures drove her to prescription drug abuse not alcohol, heard her say that in an interview…there’s loads of interviews of her online perhaps enjoy one. She was really a lovely person and was a huge star.
How insulting…they were very slow not to guess Rosemary. Connie Frances…then Patti Page? Hello? Rosemary having to say because the host asked her, that she was heading to sing at a princess Grace Red Cross Gala dinner put things in perspective along with the fact that she’d just sung the previous night at the political fundraiser. Ohhhh they weren’t so smart that night….considering how quick they were 7 years previously! God rest them all at this stage…especially Dorothy Kilgallen…tragic.
Dorothy sounds different when introducing Bennett Cerf
I think so too.
She was struggling, that's why. It's uncomfortable to watch. Poor Dorothy.
@@davidsanderson5918 She did this on another episode but I think she was trying to contain a sneeze.
STROKE
Yeah, a couple of awkward moments -- Dorothy's weird intro and Daly jumping from an analogy about cows standing to women standing. Not quite at the top of their game.
Though I gotta say, I love the awkward moments just as much as the witty ones. It's these occasional awkward moments that make the show feel real, as manufactured as it was.
If a guest's occupation has something to do with cows you now it will be funny - after seeing most of availble episodes I think everybody agree that is a general rule ;-)
Great epi of WML!
Rosemary could belt out a ballad.
Since cattle have feet, not hands, shouldn't the second challenger have more properly been called a cow "pedicurist"?
To take your observation on step further, so to speak, cows have hooves instead of feet. So the contestant was actually a hooficurist.
@@mikejschinActually, cows have feet. According to Wikipedia, "A (/ˈhuːf/ or /ˈhʊf/), plural (/ˈhuːvz/ or /ˈhʊvz/) or /ˈhʊfs/, is the tip of a toe of an ungulate mammal, strengthened by a thick and horny keratin covering."
@@jackkomisar458 Does that mean hooficurist can't be a word? Though your information is appreciated, it is sorely disappointing to find that my attempt to expand the English language comes to nought. lol
@@mikejschin Yes, there is no reason why it cannot be a word. But cows have feet.

One of my favorite episodes! Arlene Francis was hilarious when asking about a cow’s waist!😂
Haven't gotten past the intro yet, and something seems wrong with Dorothy.
Love tipsy Arlene!
Wow! Rosemary looks slimmer and younger here than in her 1955 appearance on the show.
Better in 1955.
This was the second time in early 1962 WML episodes where Arlene seemed . . . . uh -- flushed. This may account for why she was so memorably funny with the second contestant.
***** I'm thinking "flushed" is a euphemism for (probably) being a bit tipsy.
Arlene is one of the people from history I would MOST like to go back in time and have a few cocktails with!
Apparently, Martin Gabel was quite a heavy drinker, and I doubt that Arlene was a teetotaler. But even though she definitely seems "tipsy," she's even funnier than usual, and as charming as ever.
What's My Line?
She may also have been focusing partly on opening night in OLD ACQUAINTANCE the next night. Let's cut her some slack.

it is rare that the celebrity stumps the panel.
Rosemary Clooney was the mentor and idol of understated mega-star of modern jazz singing Diana Krall!
The cow manicurist was hilarious!😂😂😂😂😂
Arlene Francis in this episode honestly reminded me of Brett Somers' Match Game persona.
She's such a favorite of mine
Martin Gabel's question, "You have nothing to do with branding," should have gotten a yes. I'm surprised John Daly missed that one. He's usually right on top of questions like that.
LOL Dorothy was about to sneeze again, had me in stitches! LMAO!
I can't believe the panelists had such trouble with Rosemary. Although, being mistaken for Connie Francis and Patti Page is high praise indeed!
I'm always waiting with great anticipation when Arlene Francis has her turn to speak, because often she is so funny. She has a true gift of having and appreciating a quick wit--and an intelligent one, as well. ~ Now, on another note, I cannot get used to the women's hairstyles of the mid-1950s into the 1960s, as we see showcased on WML episodes; the women "look like" they're wearing these huge, heavy helmets on their heads. I love today's one particular style of women's hair, which is mostly long and flowing, in displaying the "wearer's" radiant beauty.
One thing that always got to me about John Daly is after the game is over with the guest. the guest very seldom gets to explain what he does. John feels he has to do it for
them.
.. that's his job.
I can't argue with that, but part of the time he didn't know what he was talking about anyway. But he was a great host.
Couldn't they have somehow afforded more seating? They had those poor guests all smooshed in together up front.
I laugh every time the men in the audience whistle and carry on whenever a girl signs in.
$250 for a dinner is equivalent to about $2000 today!

Interesting that water pollution was talked about back then. Maybe had to do with Rachel Carson's upcoming book about ecology.

Not a real surprise that they, being mostly New Yorkers, didn't know what a stanchion is. Still, I really enjoy watching.

In later years she was heavy and when she got off the stage, she shook the floor, this was at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. A very good singer of course.
