They look fascinating! As cretan, they remind me of cretan dances in particular, but with such distinctive sound and the whole group sharing the energy of the lead. Beautiful really.
Hi, the whole line does the basic steps and the ones leading do the most moves. Anyone can take a turn in leading. More info in this short documentary here ua-cam.com/video/iBRe7QF6re4/v-deo.html
You start with an easy dance to learn how to follow rhythm and move your shoulders. Even some old guys are not adept dancers, it depends basically on if a young guy is willing to humiliate themselves a few times to get better. Some guys have a gift naturally. Edit: after watching a documentary on this channel it seems these Lebanese take it even more seriously, with children being taught and leading the dance 😂 I assume that this particular dance is a young person’s game that not everybody plays, and a group of friends or family will practice with each other and become more adept, with many other people never learning properly.
Some use a prop such as a cloth, keychain etc. as not to leave their hands open and to signify leading the dabke line, more information here ua-cam.com/video/iBRe7QF6re4/v-deo.html
In north Iraq near Nineveh Plains area the male lead at the front uses a cane, and the one at the back, often a woman, uses a decorated cloth. In south east Turkey it is a decorated cloth on both ends. Basically it’s so the ones at the end don’t have an empty hand they have nothing to do with, and also clearly mark the start and end of the line for people joining (in cramped spaces the line sometimes starts to twist around itself).
I think a lot of ancient regional dances around Europe are similar. I did circle dance classes once and there were similar dances from all over Europe.
It's always the first few dudes who get to have all the fun... The rest of the guys just holding hands standing around watching waiting they don't get to do anything

Is this type of dance only done at weddings? If so, how would a person typically learn it (given that it wouldn't happen frequently)?
Hi, pretty much any celebration. A person typically learns mostly growing up around the culture and we do have lots of weddings all the time
Dabke(دبکت) is Arab folk dance particularly performed in wedding or other joyous occasions, most popular in Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon etc.
You start with an easy dance to learn how to follow rhythm and move your shoulders. Even some old guys are not adept dancers, it depends basically on if a young guy is willing to humiliate themselves a few times to get better. Some guys have a gift naturally.
