I think the localisation is really well made and the way they used english in the game really sold the fantasy setting. It was quite immersive I would say.
There is no such thing as a perfect translation. 100% word by word won't give off the same vibe, as someone who would sound rude in japanase because their standard for rudeness are well lower than ours, would just be midly familiar for an english audience if you don't translate it. I've been consuming fantrad for a decade before the rise or proffesional translation became standardised and let me tell you that just because those fantrad were more faithful they didn't feel more natural. Sure one could argue that we could just learn japanese culture and we wouldn't get confused by a literal translation anymore, but that would still feel weird. How do you translate someone finishing their sentence in arinsu or gozaru style ? You have to make every word of the sentence more elegant or more rash if you want to give the idea, there is no direct equivalent in english. And that's why people who love to complain about translation will always find something to complain about and it's a never ending cycle because they are asking for something that is literally impossible.
I can understand and speak japanese fully, and know enough to read about 800 kanji. I usually play jrpgs in jp voices and English text, so I can tell you. Localisation is hardly ever faithful in terms of non voiced characterisation. I've always felt discrepancy between the Japanese character and English speaking character. It's always been there and probably won't go away
Anyone who's played a fan translation that tried to be literal, knows that they always become a miserable reading experience, a miserable dry experience. It's why translations are rarely literal and 1:1.
Nah id rather a translation try to be close to literal then this Bullshit with adding things that don't belong to the characters. Fuck that. I want to hear the Original translation not the opinions of the shit-heels that are translating it

The differences are cultural. Japanese culture is so regimented and steeped in tradition that even the most minor deviations from the expected or appropriate behavior can evoke an emotional response in a player born and raised in Japan that can really sell the story about a character. English speaking audiences require much more colorful portrayals to evoke the same emotions or achieve the same characterizations. Alternatively, certain characterizations just don't carry the same weight or significance in the west, so an entirely different characterization is chosen so that the audience will still be able to resonate with the character enough so that the character can properly fulfill it's role in the story.
Im hoping its the same in Chinese but its a lilttle weird to use the Japanese text of a Chinese game to say what the English translation should be for HSR
I am fully expecting people like you would comment about that and it's my fault to not fully disclosing that info. This particular discussion of localization has been in HSR's subreddit for months and people have confirmed that it is the same for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Only English is different with Seele being repulsive about Luka. As to why I used Japanese for the video, well that's because I can only understand Japanese out of the three to make a correct judgement.
@Izanagi_ I just want to say I wasn't trying to be a dick or anything it was just a lil weird to see that example in that way. If you had used the base chinese text to then show how japanese got it right and english got it wrong it would've been great. It's also a little weird cuz it's not like there's a lack of mistakes in translations of japanese games.
