Potentially, first MMO which development started post 'AI' emergence. Giving the rapid technological progress, we might get a phenomenal product at the end, but.. I hope they will start development 2-3+ years from now. Otherwise, ANet might run into a problem, where they will spent two years on something (engine, assets, etc) only to find out that there are new tool, that can do the same.. but in matter of 3 months.

I agreed with what you were saying about it is a lost in translation. "GW3" is what they decided to call the new expansion content. As well the Satellite content that Anet has been working on with the unreal engine.

I'm in the industry and I briefly talked to a recruiter about joining what I presume was the GW3 project. They were only hiring for key roles last year and really getting staffed for pre-production. Extrapolating from that timeline, they're so early in the pre-production process right now that its unlikely there is anything interesting to see for anyone outside the studio. They'll still be in the stage where the core direction and technologies of the game are being worked out.

an Guild Wars 3 mmorpg it will take IMO 5 years to make. So by that time we will all be ready to move on. And they can do the same thing that was done when we move from GW1 to GW2. Time jump. 300, 500, 1000 years, no problem. And there can still be a link to GW2 be waking up Aurene to challenge a new threat
But if we want to keep GW2 mmo and do something new, that will add to the story, I think an CRPG, diablo-style game, would be awesome! :)

This whole thing was clumsy. They're trying to spin the withholding of individual game financials from the quarterly reports as as somehow in shareholder interests, they randomly preempted their studio in announcing a massive new project via this weird passing mention, and they gave generally the worst imaginable defense of NCW leadership short of just insulting the guy who posed the question. I thought these guys were more professional than this tbh, but they read as a bit goofy. Still didn't beat Blizzard "don't you guys have phones!?!?!" but not for lack of trying.

I have happily spent far too much money on this game to support it, because I truly believe this game is something special. Even with all my playtime on/off since 2012 and all the money spent (like for god sake, I collect the chair skins etc like it's a ocd sport) I still would appreciate a Guild Wars 3 eventually, but I don't think it would be smart to allude to that quite yet. GW2 still has a lot of life in it, and I see so many newer players in maps nowadays and still always have people to do content with. That being said, the game is getting so limited based on the coding it's created from and there is only so much improvements they can do to further the game while keeping it stabilized.
I just hope what further content we get continues to be engaging for those of us who hold this game in high regard.

This sounded like a very off the cuff blurb in response to NCSoft Leadership being criticized. Almost like they’re attempted to save face when being presented with the fact that they’re in the negatives profit-wise. Just like you said, we don’t know if that’s actually how the conversation went down, but on the outside it looked like “We’re in the Red, fire this guy” “no wait, they’re making Guild Wars 3”. What’s terrifying is that I wouldn’t bring up Guild Wars 3 in an investor meeting unless I was expecting its release or earnings to impact company stocks within the next fiscal year…so will we see something between now and next January? Who knows.

MMOs tend to take several years, like 5 at the minimum, to get released. I saw the open jobs on the Arenanet site and they're hiring for lead roles etc. - this means they're assembling a core team, they might have a rough gameplay prototype or something and some concept art on their walls - meaning nothing is done yet and they're still figuring out direction with GW3. It feels pretty obvious with Secrets of the Obscure that they're stretched rather thin and are concentrating their efforts on another project right now though.
GW3 might be 6 years away from a release. For me, I am happy anyone is still working on a new MMO these days. We don't really have anything decent except GW2, FF14 and WoW and even that's debatable. Fresh wind with new gameplay concepts and all the great graphics that are possible by now is definitely needed. Although I find that GW2 has great gameplay, but it's starting to feel stunted by it's engine/dev power. It's poorly optimized and probably one of the major reasons they can't build cool new shit with it. Like isn't it just the GW1 engine with a few tuned things on top? That's about 20 years old at it's core. We all know how much has happened since then...

    • @EmpyreanDreamer

One positive to think about is it may not take the typical amount of time an MMO development cycle usually does if they're building it on UE5 and utilizing some new AI tech. UE5 also guarantees not just great visuals but solid optimization too. Definitely something to look forward to if it's in the works. Personally I'm skeptical but I also can't disagree that they're clearly spread thin based on the current expansion. Either the studio is tiny now or the majority of its resources are focused on something bigger.

    • @Nellyaa
      @Nellyaa 8 місяців тому

@@EmpyreanDreamer AI is very questionable at best, considering copyright etc. I expect quite some regulations to come that might overthrow any AI a studio might want to use in their workflow. I feel like it currently is not a safe bet to utilize it. There is some potential it speeds up some aspects of their work (concept art, grunt dev work, some story/lore) that they can use as a starting point to refine and correct. But if you want to deliver quality work you still have to rework everything any current AI puts out by a respective professional, making the time save smaller than most people think. AI has a lot of buzzwords around it. It's not the sentient almighty savior some people think it is.

GW3 has probably been in development since the release of End of Dragons if not earlier based on the slowdown in content. Would not be surprised to see a release in 3 year's time.
Regarding Anet hiring lead roles. Leads frequently leave and need to be replaced and though internal promotions do happen, the preference of Anet is to bring in outside talent, since they don't want to remove a productive team member from their current role. Hiring a lead is not a sign they are building new teams.

Whatever it is, I imagine they want it to be played on consoles too like FFXIV as that's a big market they can't tap into with GW1 OR GW2 and probably why they want to use Unreal Engine (though that could just be because using an existing good engine is cheaping and easier than making your own).
Maybe even mobile, but I can't see them going the route of something like Genshin Impact. I suppose they could, even though something like Guild Wars 1 with a summonable henchmen system makes more sense on mobile to me.
I'll support them regardless. I like ANet and this game is 5+ probably close to 6-8 years out unless they are doing something weird like porting GW2 to a new engine which I suppose is posisble, so GW2 will get at least 3-4 more mini-xpacs I imagine and honestly I don't care about other MMOs. lol I LIKE GW2s non-gear grind end game.

    • @kaedriz
      @kaedriz 3 місяці тому

Their using UE5 could be also due to NCSoft using it in their projects, i.e Throne & Liberty and others. They wouldn't be learning the engine from scratch. Additionally there is this new trend on using UE5 for future mmo due to it's easy optimization thanks to nanite/lumen and not sacrificing graphics in the process. But learning new engine, make internal tooling for it, workflows etc. will still take a lot of time, so I presume new game is maybe at best 2027 sadly, and even that is far fetched if they are creating everything from scratch.

As someone with a ton of time and money spent on GW2 since launch, I'm pretty excited at the idea of getting a new game. Yes, losing all the progress to start over can feel bad, but on the other hand, having a soft end-point to grind toward is, personally, more motivating to get me to log in, as I've been starting to feel like Arenanet is reaching their limit of gameplay creativity in GW2. No way I'd stick around for another ten years of collecting orbs and every map being designed around skyscales lol. Story-wise, I really haven't connected with much since Bjora Marches and Drizzlewood, so I'm very much looking forward to a hard reset of a brand new story in this setting.
I hope NCsoft didn't damage GW2 too much by saying this, however. I can see a lot of people avoiding new expansions or new players not installing because of the, "why spend money on this when it's going to be abandoned for a sequel," thoughts.

I would love some RPG style games set in Tyria. It is such a rich setting that quite frankly is often limited by its aversion to a traditional questing approach. I understand that GW2 is built around Events and they work well for what GW2 aims to do, but the janky AP pseudo questing system is evidence enough that even Arenanet is craving more. A standard RPG in Tyria, built in Unreal Engine and so much more accessible to some of their newer talent would perfectly complement GW2. It would expand the GW community with a large portion of GW2's playerbase ready to jump in and once people finish that game and crave more, where do they go? GW2, which both helps player numbers and aids Arenanet massively because ultimately an MMO will always be more monetisable than a single player RPG.

Putting aside the issue of abandoning 10+ years of account progress, there's much opportunity in wiping the slate clean. I'm sure that if presented with a clean slate, ArenaNet would design a much better game that avoids many of the issues GW2 launched with or accumulated over the years, that are too deep to go back and fix. But I've no confidence that ArenaNet's views on design and lack of patience for sticking with established design has changed, and that's ultimately what caused many of these issues.
As for account progress, GW1 barely had any so I don't think that comparison really helps. The better comparison is to people leaving GW2 and starting a fresh account in another game. I just returned from a ~3 year break since Champions and I never missed the combat, the story, the characters, the builds, anything like that. Well, perhaps the mounts. But as pathetic as it sounds, I did miss my account progression. Relics? Never heard of it. I'll get a free legendary one for logging in? Now that's intriguing!

We see the success of PoE, which is a spiritual successor to D2 and GW1 (currency, skill system, town system, and netcode all taken from GW1 according to Chris), and the failure of D4 and stagnancy of Lost Ark-- that section of the market is extremely open to a modern GW1 take.

I have had a few private discussions with Anet devs about this in the past. Understandably they were a bit vague with me, so take this with a grain of salt: The impression I get is that they have been working on a successor to GW2 for a very long time, but that there has been a history of scrapping and restarting the project repeatedly in a chase for perfection - and that this may have been part of why they experienced the big layoffs a couple years ago. Assuming any of that is true, this "announcement" doesn't really feel like news at all - more of a "yes, investors, this studio is working on their next thing rather than stagnating" throwaway - and "working on" is a far cry from "releasing", in any case. I wouldn't lend it any weight until we hear something more definitive.

I got downvoted on Reddit just recently for stating Guild Wars 3 should/could already be in development, and now look at us. I've played Guild Wars since Prophecies, and have been on and off playing since GW2 launch. The game is good. The story, albeit cheesy and making some upsetting choices (#SaveEir), is good. The Lore is amazing. The world is beautiful. So why are people so hard against Guild Wars 3, letting the developers expand their tools, their art, and the games development. The engine has limitations, to say the least. From CPU limitations, to graphical ones. Although Guild Wars 2 is beautiful, from Cantha to Kryta, From Elona to the Northern reaches, it's only beautiful because of the Art Team. They are quite visibly held back. Other MMOs, and yes we must look to it's competition, are getting Graphical updates. And although I will be the first to admit "Graphics don't make the game", it does have a factor. And when your game looks dated (yet beautiful), and other games also look beautiful (but not as dated), people are drawn to the shinier thing.
Guild Wars 2 has been slowly adjusting to maintenance mode for a while now, and the yearly expansions sort of lead towards it. It honestly feels like they introduce new content just to abandon it. Dungeons, Raids, etc. With Secrets, and the new expansions coming this year and next, we very well could be looking at a trilogy that leads up to a Guild Wars 3, or announcement. My Guess is that they'll announce Guild Wars 3 after the next expansion, and the final expansion will be that "bridge" for us, which then leads to Guild Wars 3 in 2026/2027.
No matter how you cut it. The Devs probably don't want to work on an "upgraded" Guild Wars 1 engine anymore, and with UE5 and it's forward compatibility is probably very intriguing to them, let alone the tools for graphics, lighting, shading, rendering, sound design, etc... The list goes on. I think we'll see adjustments to allow Guild Wars 2 events, and such to be completed with smaller groups over the coming years, and then we'll slowly transition into Guild Wars 3.

    1) I'm not too sure we should be taking this as a mistaken announcement, more 'rough plans for the future' and in that respect did we doubt GW3 was going to happen EVENTUALLY?
    2) I'm convinced the project they're currently working on is not GW3. Makes sense to work on a different MMO (Horizon is bookies fav) then invest that money and expertise in GW3 5-7 years down the line. I think GW2 is here for the foreseeable.
    3) ANET do need to get ahead of this, this story has already taken off at rocket's pace.

Great takes. I agree with everything except the slight apprehensiveness towards making another MMO as GW2 is out. From my own interactions with others and the general sentiment from the internet, I think there is still a big desire for a nice high quality MMO. My friends and I have all stopped playing GW2 for a variety of reasons, yet every other MMO we try is not as smooth, rewarding, or as classy as Guild Wars. Crappy MMOs come out every year and die just as fast, and massive companies have tried forcing MMOs that just have no soul to them. I think the tech and gameplay they've designed for Guild Wars is a pretty perfect balance, just the game is old and bloated with conflicting content and ideas now.

Maybe even set up all GW2 cosmetics, mounts, etc. as GW2 exclusives, so you need to play GW2 to have them in GW3?

I'm excited for a Guild Wars 3 same as I was excited for a Guild Wars 2. It's notorious how hard it is to develop and add certain things in GW2 due to spaghetti code and how old the engine is so for this reason alone I think getting a GW3 is exciting.
Now I certainly understand people feeling their game is getting abandoned and all the worries that come with it, I lived those to an extent with GW1 when 2 was announced but 17 years later and I still play GW semi-regularly along with GW2. Sure we might not get new stuff but the game is still here and even though the community has considerably shrunk there is still a die hard core fanbase that keeps the game alive.
Now granted GW2 is structured very differently and they'd have to get pretty creative to make GW2 playable mostly solo like GW1 is now due to world events, no henchmen or heroes for instanced content, etc... In that same breath though in the last extra-life stream Arenanet did, Colin (I think) mentionned how stopping development on GW1 was a mistake as the two games are so different they could have coexisted and continued development on both... Maybe they learned from their mistakes and will do just that with 2 and 3, even if content for 2 would probably be smaller in scope. Heck I'm getting into hopium territory now but imagine if they also released a GW1 remake, we could have all 3 games running at the same time with different takes on gameplay and the world of Tyria.

IF trhey are making a GW3, then they would account link like they did for GW and GW2 and any legendaries would be transfered no doubt as they did with armours etc from GW to GW2. This still means that for instance, to get ALL the pets in GW2, if I remember rightly, 4 are only obtainable in GW.
Imo? I wouldn't say it means abandoning your GW2 account as they would, I am sure, make it worhwhile doing all of them in some way if you want to and so can still get Legendaries etc, that could appear in some way in the next so negating the need to abandon GW2. HoM was part of the linking and even in the Achievements (HoM under General).
I wouldn't worry everyone, you do not have to abandon GHW2 at all due to the above for a "GW3" if there will be one (probably will be), hence why there is still a following in GW as they are linked but just different eras. Like an ancestor character to the new ones, which I think it was supposed to be. It will be a while anyway and yes, this does create a new scenario, another 250 years jump or more with new tech?
Please don't worry about the money you have spent in GW2, like GW, the stories are very much linked, tied together and far too much loved to not keep them running.

Sounds more like they’re talking about the consolidation of their west studios. I’d be intrigued by a GW3 and where they’d want to go with it - like what kind of time jump are we looking at and what’s happened in the world since. Which races would be playable (could bring in tengu, but I don’t want to lose charr). I’d also be interested if that’s just how they’re referring to a visual update (would be interesting timing since Final Fantasy 14 is currently doing one). I’d also be interested if it wasn’t an MMO but still uses the world.
Overall though without proper information I find it hard to get too excited or panicked. I still enjoy GW2 and the slew of characters I’ve made there, and I’ve still got plenty of projects to work on since I’m not super fast either. I'll still always enjoy this game, there really is no other MMO out there that values your time more than GW2.

I love gw2 and would prefer if it was anet main focus (even 100% or 99%), but if it is not possible it would be better for gw2 to end and they 100% focus something new if they belive it could and would be better. Look what all the cuting did to the story if long term fans are more interested in complaining that 'key story npc sounds like quaguan' then in the actual story. I think the "I invested so much time into GW2, I'm gonna quit and not play GW3!" is a bit silly... If you've played this much GW2 there's a good chance you're the exact target audience for GW3, and you'll change your mind later or split your attention until GW3 gains more of your attention. We've seen similar stuff with GW1, tho there weren't exactly so many microtransactions in GW1 so the monetary investment is there. I still don't see the argument standing up in the long term
Personally GW2 is my favourite game and I never want to live in an era without a Guild Wars MMO. If more games give them resources for better GW support, and if we can get player population up again then I'm ready for it. I do also think a GW3, or even a GW2 relaunch is a good idea just because there are a lot of empty areas and "dead" portions of the game. Gutting those so they can focus on a direction they want to focus on would make the game feel more cohesive and populated, which might draw more people in.
I don't know, I'm mixed! I love GW2, I love MMO's, I want to see Guild Wars succeed. So whatever makes that happen, I'm on board with

We went to a whole new part of the setting, whole new characters and races, left behind all the baggage from the dragon story - And it still feels repetitive and the same, only everything's grey and red. I think this plan to move out of the dragon story probably did not work and they're looking for a more drastic reset. Which could also be sold as a GW3

They'd likely implement another Hall of Monuments system so you'd still get rewards for your gw2 progress. I get lots of people would find it hard at first but I really think we should just rip the bandaid off and embrace gw3 if it ever comes because it would be so healthy for the game. I know so many people who no longer play gw2 because it's very dated, and I can't get any of my friends to start playing gw2 with me because the graphics look so old that they feel the game will die soon and it just doesn't feel good/immersive to be in the world when it looks so bad and there's also so many bugs with the spaghetti code at this point. It would bring so much new interest and relevance to have a more modern guild wars game. And gw2 would still be there for people who are total diehard gw2 fans - quite a number of people still play gw1 (I know because I also play it from time to time).

I'd love two games to be active. I'd happily play two guild wars IP games and spend money freely, and rejoice for a new game. As long as Guild Wars 2 continues because the fact is, I simply do not believe Guild Wars 2 will *truly* be out of ideas for DECADES to come. Look at WoW for an example of a game doing this, or look at some of your own videos for Guild Wars-specific ideas of what the game can do! Anything that kills GW2 which I am attached to as a home and a place to always be, I do not want. It's not as simple and shallow as 'I unlocked stuff don't throw it away' like you say, it's emotional, it's an attachment, a home I don't want to have taken from me. Only *after* that does 'stuff' matter, because why should you invest in a new game when that games existence proves the devs will whenever they feel it's time, take everything you've done from you and ask you to start again, again? I'm more than happy to give Anet double the money I have faith they can have me invested in two Guild Wars games, the new one can be almost any genre and I'd like it if nothing else for its IP. But it's either two or none for me, if it kills my beloved then I have nothing more to say, give, or do for Arenanet products

My doomer take is that this is either translated wrong or saying "Guild Wars 3" was just not meant so literally or was referring to expansions and not communicated well. As a BDO player I can confirm google translate does not handle korean well. However there's always a chance and the optimistic side of me has some hope. The new expansion model is much less ambitious than what they were doing before and it doesn't even release with all of the features at launch. That could definitely be a sign of being strapped for resources because they're being diverted to something much bigger. If its true and they don't have anything substantial to show I doubt ArenaNet will respond to this.
Also just throwing it out there but I don't think anyone in their right mind would bring this up in an investor meeting as sort of a silver lining to their financial situation unless the products release was imminent. Whether GW3 exists or not I think we can all agree it definitely isn't coming this year.

"Guild Wars 3" could just mean a really big xpac and the NC exec that mentioned it just didn't have all the details on what kind of project that money was going into. These people care about the bottom line they don't care about the games themselves, I think it's highly probable that someone in that position would see a bunch of money going into development of the Guild Wars ip and make the assumption that it was a new game being developed in the series. I think it's waay too soon for the playerbase to be speculating anything about this statement. We don't know enough about it and I think there's a good chance that exec was making an assumption based on the data he had available. Especially since it sounds like people's jobs were maybe feeling a bit threatened in that moment, so he may have also been trying to talk a good game to secure his job. We should wait for Anet to comment on it honestly, they are the ones actually developing it after all. But if you were to ask me I don't see this happening as an MMORPG, I just don't think that things have advanced enough for a Guild Wars 3 to look much different than a Guild Wars 2. We would effectively be starting from ground zero in order to get...more of the same thing we already get with gw2. Technology just hasn't improved enough to make the development of an entirely new MMORPG seem reasonable, especially when you are currently sitting on one that is wildly successful and continues to grow.

What you're saying here is on par with the CEO of Ford seeing 'a bunch of money' being thrown at 'a project' that he 'doesn't know the details of' and just assuming 'They must be making the 'Ford Raptor 2.'
He absolutely knows that they're working on the Guild Wars IP, and he absolutely knows that its Guild Wars 3. The CEO of the company doesn't just let people allocate tens or hundreds of millions of dollars into a project that will go on for at least a decade without knowing the details. They will have had to pitch the game to the CEO and prove to him that it is worth the investment, which would involve analytics of the MMO market and the successes of GW2, the resurgence of WoW in recent years and the rise of FF14.
