      Thomas & Stereo Could you answer a question for me:
      If you have a speaker with an impedance of 6ohms,
      which post should it be connected to, the 4ohms or the 8ohms???

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  7 місяців тому +2

      @@aldoantoniovicentesilva6996 Usually I would go with 4 ohm but it can sound better with 8 ohm. Some 8 ohm speakers will dip down to 3.2ohm. My understanding is you will have a better idea looking at the impedance graph.

    Wow, I never had to leave a comment like this before. I normally only look at the comments just to get various thoughts and opinions on perhaps comparisons to other speakers. And I was surprised to see several really ridiculous and ticky tack comments. No wonder some folks cringe at the term of so called audiophile at times. Couldn’t imagine the poor people who are married to these guys or friends with them. Must be a real downer. Anyways sorry for the tangent. To Thomas, I have always appreciated your reviews, your stories and your enthusiasm.You’ve helped me a lot on my own discovery of Hi-Fi audio. Congrats on your new speaker and I wish you all the best with it. So regardless whether it’s the best speaker ever or merely just a good speaker. Either way you deserve congrats for your endeavor and your efforts. Appreciate you pal and have a great one.

It somewhat changed my perspective on the silliness of some of these costs. I got the impression even the sales staff couldn’t pass a blindfold test of equipment. Just enjoy the music more over the gear my friend. You will be happier in the end I assure you.

    I purchased these. Confirming what other said about being great a low levels. There is also lots of sound stage, the better the amp, the more you get I'm thinking although they sound great running off my REGA Brio-R. I love that they are made of birch and are really quite beautiful The finish is high end and they have nice tone like cello when you rap them with your knuckles. I am one to EQ via WiiM app and these sound good with a variety of presets depending on how the music is recorded. Really fun to play around with. Never yet used the foam inserts BTW. I just don't see the need. Listen to wide range of music. Diane Bish sounds amazing. These are full range speakers. You don't need a sub., so really do help the home decor if that's important to you. One less thing lurking around the entertainment center.

      @@ThomasAndStereo I would probably like the TL. Actually I worked on the grills for the elacs, removed the black inner layer, scrubbed down the adhesive and made them more acoustically transparent. To me the upper mid-range sounds better with the grills on currently. Without the grills something about the treble was just a bit unnatural at the higher frequencies. Not bad, but I'm a musician. They just sound better with the grills on for me, with just a bit of treble boost. For me, balance is the key. Whatever sounds like real musicians playing live is what I like. I get that with the Elacs when properly set up. Don't try this at home inexperienced...

    This is my opinion and journey with the Voyagers as I recently had them at home for auditioning.
    At first, they sound very neutral to me, not that different from my Tekton Design Dynamites. I knew that eventually, I needed to do an A/B comparison. Many of the Voyager reviews said that they were on the warm side of neutral.
    My Setup:
    Power Amplifier - NAD C 298
    Preamplifier - Benchmark L4A
    Source - Inuos Pulse Mini
    DAC - Denafrips ARES 12th-1
    I usually listen at no more than 80db high, my room is 11 feet by 14 feet and the speakers are like 12 feet from my ears.
    The Voyagers sounded great nonetheless. I thought they would be warmer on the highs. I kept evaluating with other sources, the Sim Audio 260 D CD transport via a Geshelli JNOG2 [J2] DAC with an AKM chip and Sparkos Op-Amps
    They did not sound bright; I was expecting a very warm sound (based on reviews), but they still sounded neutral like my Tektons, so I thought based on memory. It has been said that they can sound warm or neutral; I assumed it depends on the amplifier feeding them.
    I tried with no foam and full foam. I thought no foam might be less fatiguing as more bass will come into play. Or maybe I just have super sensitive ears as I am in my early 60's now . At one point throughout the evaluation, I thought I needed to listen to some Wharfedale Diamonds or Revel Concerta2 M16's again, as in the past (7 years ago?) I auditioned those at home and they sounded veiled to me and I sold and sent them back to the retailer.
    The imaging and soundstage of the speakers were great by the way, holographic. I played around with toe-in and out (off axis and on-axis variations) with the speaker placement.
    Obviously, the longer I listened to them, the more I got used to them.
    Then, I listened to the speakers with the half foam for a while at low volumes (an average of 65 db) and it was pleasant. I still could hear all the details and I did not get tired/fatigued. I thought that I still needed more sessions like that to come to a final assessment.
    I finally did an A/B comparison and the Voyager was much warmer when compared to my Tekton Dynamites. It is amazing how much an A/B comparison can reveal.
    After this, I purchased the speakers. I have become fond of them.

    My view on these speakers! 99 percent of us that watch and listen UA-camrs reviewing all sorts of of audio equipment,especially speakers……My first impression on these speakers were like hmmmm the sound is pretty good, the sound stage seems to be pretty big,and they seem to have pretty good bass from what Thomas was saying. Now, I know I know you gonna say carl you can’t judge a speaker by listening to it through a iPad speaker,c’mon man! Well I would have to agree but hey we all do it 😉 😂 now lucky for me I had to go by Thomas’s house to pick some tubes,and while being there Thomas pops the question hey carl would you like to listen to my new speakers? Of course I said yes 👍 I’ll keep this short lol first off everything Thomas spoke about was right on and would agree with him.these little speakers pack a punch “trust me’’ they can shake a floor, very impressive. Honestly for a small woofer these things bang for the buck are amazing.so I would greatly suggest to anyone going to the Montreal audio show is find Thomas and have a listen to these little greatness of a speaker and BTW there was a little something about these speakers I didn’t like, but what I will do I’ll let Thomas maybe explain what it was in his next video 😉😆

    May I ask a general question? Why do some amps/receivers have a speaker impedance selection while others don't? What is the switch actually doing? My Marantz has it, but not my Pioneer Elite.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  Місяць тому

      I asked AI and this is the anwser
      "Some amplifiers and receivers have a speaker impedance selection switch to accommodate different speaker loads and ensure optimal performance and safety. This switch allows users to select the impedance setting that matches their speakers, typically in increments like 4, 6, or 8 ohms.
      Purpose of the Impedance Switch
      Power and Heat Management: The impedance switch helps manage the power output and heat generation of the amplifier. Lower impedance settings (e.g., 4 ohms) allow the amplifier to deliver more current, which can result in increased heat. By selecting the appropriate impedance, the amplifier can operate more efficiently and safely.
      Sound Quality: The impedance setting can also affect sound quality. For instance, using a lower impedance setting might result in a more controlled sound, while a higher setting could produce a wider soundstage but potentially more congestion in the sound.
      Protection: The switch serves as a protective measure to prevent damage to the amplifier and speakers. Mismatched impedance can lead to overheating or distortion, so setting the correct impedance helps avoid these issues
      2
      .
      Why Some Amps Don't Have the Switch
      Not all amplifiers and receivers include an impedance selection switch because many modern devices are designed to handle a range of speaker impedances automatically. These devices are built to manage the varying impedance loads without manual intervention, making the switch unnecessary for typical consumer use. Additionally, some manufacturers may prioritize simplicity and user-friendliness, opting to design their products to work seamlessly with common speaker impedances without requiring user adjustments."

    Good for you Mr. Thomas! I am very happy for you that you are making a real go at the stereo market. FWIW, although as I have sent you pictures before, I have tall multi-driver open baffle dipole line arrays with 13 drivers a side (custom designed by a good stereo designer friend of mine - so NOT at a high cost) So, that is my very favourite type. However, for many years before this I also had a custom made, by another stereo designer friend, a simple transmission line set with 2 drivers, a huge, heavy box with a custom designed 8" driver with a folded horn transmission line coming out the front at the bottom, and ribbon tweeters mounted on separate plinths that sat on top of the tall boxes, which could be simply moved forward, backward, tilted horizontally, whatever to suit and balance the sound.
    And, I must say, that I *LOVED* the transmission line sound! It is so open and spacious and the bass goes pretty deep. A fantastic sound! So, being a person who will never, ever, *EVER* have conventional sealed 'boxes' I can imagine that your new transmission line speakers will sound awesome! 😁👍

      Thanks, yes I remember your system and I cannot only imagine how big the soundstage would be. Transmission line has its strength and personally I had a few in my house before, I think everyone should give it a try. Thanks for your comment.

    • @latheofheaven
      @latheofheaven 7 місяців тому

      @@ThomasAndStereo Yeah, that was the primary idea in creating the line arrays and their strong point is indeed in the size of the image and soundstage. The components aren't that expensive and the tonality may not be up to the better speakers, but it most DEFINITELY does show up differences in image placement and soundstage. Just a quick example, the recent Pink Floyd Animals remix. Yes, it was far more defined and exact in its presentation, but on my system I could tell that the 1st UK pressing which is indeed murkier and darker, still had a more 'organic' and natural placement of instruments in the soundstage. Whereas with the 'cleaner' more precise remix, the placement of the instruments sounded to me to be more artificial and not as naturally appearing in the image, which to me the original UK pressing sounds better.
      Also, the material lends itself to a more dark, atmospheric landscape, kind of like the original Vertigo UK pressings of the early Black Sabbath albums. On my system, that is why a LOT of these recent 1/2 speed Abbey Road remasters do not sound very good. There are exceptions, but many of them come across as fremer said about the recent Who's Next album, 'like they are projected flat across a shower curtain' In other words with no real depth or dimension.

    My RANT about speakers that sound "differenet" to other speakers. It's not so much a frequency response thing, but more of an acoustic method that's different (a bit like tube amps sounding different to solid state amps). If you have drivers in the front panel compared to a single large panel (with the same frequency respose) I reckon they would still sound different. From a speaker builder of speakers that sound "different".

      @@ThomasAndStereo I am curious about the design as I never had heard one before. The closest thing I got to it was a scooped vent box, which is kind of a horn loading and this was a commercial (DJ) speaker. It is a cross between a horn and bass reflex cabinet. Definitely not a transmission line. My closest experience with a small transmission line would be the Bose Wave Radio. If I liked the way the speaker sounds, of course I would be interested in it. Cost would be a stopping factor though as I do love the sound of Klipsch Forte speakers, but there is no way I am shelling out $3k for a pair of those.

      There are reasons to put the tweeter as close to the woofer as possible. Single driver or coaxial even put the tweeter inside the woofer. However, like everything in life, there are pros and cons. Take Harbeth for example, everyone say you need a thick cabinet, yet they use thin cabinets.

    Why not use a more detailed tweeter? Would that detract from the "heart-melting" midrange? I used to love the Buchardt S300MkII for its natural tonality, but eventually I was missing too much important detail due to its fuzzy treble. So I guess I'm not interested in this speaker -- otherwise I would be.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  7 місяців тому +2

      This tweeter is used in some usher speakers so it can be hyper detail. It is a simple resistor value change in the crossover. I did contemplate on that and experiment. Eventually I decided on this voicing because there are many speakers with hyper detail top end on the market but only a few with buttery smooth midrange. You can go for the b&w 607, it is an amazing speaker with all the detail you need. I have that speaker and am really impressed.

    • @williamdirks5805
      @williamdirks5805 7 місяців тому

      Thank you Thomas. I'm not interested in the boosted highs of B&W speakers. Could I ask more about your speaker? Since you say the tweeter "can be" hyper-detailed, it sounds as if you have rolled it off somewhat so that the highs are not as pronounced. But that's a different thing from how "resolving" or "detailed" a tweeter actually is. That's what I'm trying to understand. Lots of music doesn't need a lot of detail -- and lots of music sounded good on the Buchardt S300MKII. But some didn't. Some electronic music for example has very complex overtones and echo effects and decays in the highs that are important to the music. Please comment more about the character of your speaker and what kind of music you feel it plays the best with. Thanks again!
