Especially when you consider how GOAT mode Novak was this season and how hit and miss Evans was after Monte Carlo (sadly). That said still a big win and the only man except Medvedev in NY to beat Nole in straight sets this year
The biggest upset of the whole year was when Schwartzman lost to a random Belarusian dude, Daniil Ostapenkov, in Davis Cup who doesnt even have an ATP ranking
Yeah, don't even underestimate players that doesn't have ranking. Of course not a pro level, but we amateur players sometimes can play very very good. What Ostapenkov did was miracle. Dream. To win against TOP 15 player without your ATP ranking...
Lol, how is Ebden defeating Khachanov higher than Evans defeating Djokovic on clay??Khachanov can lose to anyone on any given day and most people wouldn't pay attention, but Evans beating Djokovic at MC was a massive shock at the time, due to Evans' poor record on the clay coming into the event.
Love Shapo but I don't think beating him is a crazy upset no matter what your rank is. Especially compared to Evans beating Djokovic. That is probably the most impressive imo
In my opinion the biggest upset was Karatsev x Djokovic. For me the match of the year. Save 23/27 bb against arguably the best returner of all time is impressive
Even though Djokovic took home 2 GS titles in 2021, I feel like the pack is slowly beginning to figure him out. The coming year could be interesting. On the other hand, he needs just 1 more GS title, and then hello retirement.
Only 3 matches from this video are actually upsets Rublev beating Nadal for the first time and on his favorite Masters 1000 tournament Evans beating Djokovic in straight sets And Lajovic beating Medvedev
Shapovalov and Khachanov’s defeat don’t come as big surprises….at least not compared to Djokovic losing to Evans….Granted that Shapovalov had a good year but he has had his fair share of defeats as well…..Even Rafa losing to Rublev should rank higher….
I gotta agree with #1. I saw Shapo -3500 live after winning the first set in that match and he completely crumbled haha. Vit played the best day of his life
Its unfortunate that they didn't put in Ruusuvuori vs Zverev in Miami. I'm pretty sure Zverev had a minor injury but Emil played very good tennis and it deserved a spot in this video.
I understand it isn’t ATP…but the biggest upset really was Nadal in FO 😭 I’m sure he will win next year And Alcaraz beating Tsitsipas in USO I mean the guy has a bionic arm
Shapovalov's year in summary: First round bye, second round win, QFs lose to a lower ranked player. Repeat the following week at the next tournament where he has a first round bye.
Some of these "upsets" may be worth noting in terms of rankings. But a lot of these, when you take certain factors into consideration aren't necessarily surprising. Even Nadal's loss to Rublev wasn't really surprising. If someone keeps track of the things that's been happening, who's been playing well, not well, coming back from a break or layoff, among many things, a lot of these really wouldn't be surprising or as shocking.
I don't think this video is justifying... Dan Evans beating Novak should be no 2 and Novak beating Nadal in French open should be no 1 ... Anyone beating Nadal in Philip chatrier should be the biggest upset of that year ...
Matthew Ebden needs a different stringing regime for his racquets. He has such poor weight of shot - he won't get anywhere with that in the modern game.
I don't think Djokovic's losses to both Evans and Karatsev were so shocking...Djoko was a bit off-color coming in to Monte Carlo and he was trying to find his feet on clay...he changed his game considerably and added new weapons which helped him beat Nadal at RG...and he always saves his best for GS. It's incredible he lost just 1 GS match all year. No matter how close the rest of the pack gets in the other tournaments, in high-crunch matches of GS's there is no one better.
That Evans win against Djokovic on clay was something else.
Especially when you consider how GOAT mode Novak was this season and how hit and miss Evans was after Monte Carlo (sadly). That said still a big win and the only man except Medvedev in NY to beat Nole in straight sets this year
hg82met: That to me was the shocker. I actually viewed it as a fluke, but then I see after all that Evan's shot selections just looked superior.
He just sliced like he was a butcher bro so much slicing in the entire match like he knew his strategy
Upset of the year in my opinion
@@abaeyessir: There was more to it than that.
The biggest upset of the whole year was when Schwartzman lost to a random Belarusian dude, Daniil Ostapenkov, in Davis Cup who doesnt even have an ATP ranking
And he Even played in Buenos Aires with his Home crowd

Schwartzman hasn’t been playing the best tennis this year lmao, he also got beaten by van de Zandschulp
@@lumleh3633 Ok, but still, it's achievement. Van de Zandschulp also showed some amazing tennis.
@@vladomontezuma626 we amateur players are underestimated. I bet you we can beat top 5 players!😂
Where is the Karatsev - Djokovic in Belgrad ?
It was surely one of the big upsets this year
Lol, how is Ebden defeating Khachanov higher than Evans defeating Djokovic on clay??Khachanov can lose to anyone on any given day and most people wouldn't pay attention, but Evans beating Djokovic at MC was a massive shock at the time, due to Evans' poor record on the clay coming into the event.
Knowing the ATP, they probably went purely by the numbers. Widest gap between rankings gets a higher spot.
I agree, as a Djokovic fan I also expected the Karatsev match to be on here since he beat him at his own tournament
Couldn’t agree more
I agree; I thought that match would be higher ranked.
@@alpine3931 That one too!
Honorable Mention: Tommy Paul winning the whole tournament in Stockholm. Beat Tiafoe and Shapovalov in great matches.
Tiafoe and shapo what? They are not top10 players and they hello inconsistent
@@beastmaster2752 Still higher ranked than Paul.
Love Shapo but I don't think beating him is a crazy upset no matter what your rank is. Especially compared to Evans beating Djokovic. That is probably the most impressive imo
Never heard kopriva before he was 249 and beat world #10 compared to a top 30 player beating djokovic that’s what makes his upset more impressive
@@joejherrington4687 Covid rankings kept Shapo as high as #10 tho
Oh yeah everyone was unbelievably shocked when Khachanov lost in a 250. I still can't get over it.
Alcaraz. That astounding 5 set win over Tsitsipas was when we knew this guy would be unstoppable one day. And that day may not be too far away.

oh yeah so true, that should be here for sure
Feels like this list could be SO MUCH better. Too many upsets missing
Only 3 matches from this video are actually upsets
Rublev beating Nadal for the first time and on his favorite Masters 1000 tournament
Evans beating Djokovic in straight sets
And Lajovic beating Medvedev
Rublev was in God mode the day he defeated Rafa. The forehand winner at the match point is the most beautiful in 2021.
The whole Indian Wells tournament?
Ivashka-Zverev as well was a great upset
Grigor’s win against Medvedev was something special. 0-1 sets and 1-4 he won

Surprised Tiafoe vs. Sinner wasn't on here.
There were moments where Tiafoe was literally just toying with Sinner.
And viceversa
Surely medvedev dimi at indian wells
I gotta agree with #1. I saw Shapo -3500 live after winning the first set in that match and he completely crumbled haha. Vit played the best day of his life
Ebden and Khachanov are like equally good, so it's not a shocker in any way.

Harris vs Nadal Washington 2021
Van de Zandschulp vs Rublev St Petersburg 2021

2:33 Who is this beauty?
Surprised how much the forehand arm movement of Paul is similar to that of khachanov
what’s the diff between god mode and biggest upsets
The biggest upset of the year was at Davis Cup between Shawrtzman and Ostapenko 😱😱
Mannarino beating rublev should’ve been here
NgL, considering how Nadal was playing I was more surprised that he won the 2nd set
