- The My London: Youth Social Action programme presents: "Serendipitous Stories" by Chalukya, serves as a platform to uplift and honour unpaid carers, utilising the medium of fashion to empower them and illuminate their narratives. Produced in collaboration with Harrow Carers and C-Change West London, as well as supported by Central Saint Martins and Fashion Scout, the film is a testament to the strength and resilience of individuals who undertake the vital but often overlooked role of caregiving.
Directed by the visionary Chalukya Samarawickrama, "Serendipitous Stories" showcases a diverse cast of models, including Kalpana, Kaijoumari, Uparima, Raj, and Lilantha. Each model embodies the essence of the film's message, sharing their unique journeys and experiences as carers.
At the heart of the film is the creative work of fashion designer Chalukya Samarawickrama, whose innovative designs serve as a visual expression of the carers' stories. From knitwear crafted by Qianzhi Qi to the Defeated Dragon Jumper by Rhona Mackillop for Knitster, every garment encapsulates the resilience and spirit of the individuals it represents.
The collaborative effort extends beyond fashion design, with contributions from videographer Arfhan Razak from C-Change West London, stylist Niyasia, and a dedicated team of assistants including Lola Odumosu, Valeria Balsano, Amaya Hunt, Julia Dotson, and Henry Dangerfield. The film's lookbook, beautifully captured by photographer Billie Jane Stringer and styled by Riah and Niyasia, further amplifies the voices of the carers.
Special recognition is given to the British Fashion Council for the MA Final Year Scholarship and Fashion Scout, Mayor of London's My London programme, whose support has been instrumental in bringing this project to life.
The My London: Youth Social Action programme is designed to provide marginalised youth in London with the tools and opportunities to make a positive impact in their communities. By amplifying the voices of young Londoners, our programme aims to empower them to become agents of change, addressing crucial challenges in the city, including environmental issues, social injustice, mental health concerns, and the need for safe spaces.
Through a combination of skills development, active participation, partnerships, and community involvement, our programme is committed to equipping young Londoners with the knowledge, abilities, and connections required to foster a more inclusive, resilient, and fair city.
This programme is also in partnership with C-Change West London (Heston West Big Local), Ealing Hounslow CVS, Hillingdon Autistic Care and Support (HACS), Spark! Charity and EACH Counselling.
