  • SpaceX has dismantled the massive nets on Ms Tree and Ms Chief which were used for catching fairings falling from space, but, they still have a large fleet of ships used for ocean recovery operations so this seems like a perfect opportunity to talk about this:

There’s no way it’s too wide. You can tell by the 40 foot containers on deck it is less than 150 feet abeam and neo Panamax is 168. It must just be cheaper to narrow it. Lower transit fees or something. Using the larger locks costs more so they can avoid that by cutting it up.

I strongly believe that will be its primary use in the SpaceX fleet. One of the uses for those ships is underwater site preparation for placing an oil rig.
They will probably set up an underwater bubble curtains around the platforms to muffle the sounds of a StarShip launch and to keep marine life out of the danger zone near a launch.
I assume that anchoring a large ring of heavy pipes with millions of tiny holes deep in the water is a non trivial task. The giant air compressors that feed the bubble curtains will be on the platform, but there will probably be a fair amount of ongoing maintenance work of the underwater parts of the system.
They will also want a ship standing by ready to gather rocket pieces off of the seafloor during the testing phase, when RUDs are common.
The Shelia Bordelon can carry two submersibles. What names would make sense in the Ian Banks universe?
      How is Shelia pronounced?

Ian M. Banks is the business. The Culture ship names are epically outstanding. I wonder if you could get "Mistake Not My Current State of Joshing Gentle Peevishness For The Awesome And Terrible Majesty Of The Towering Seas Of Ire That Are Themselves The Milquetoast Shallows Fringing My Vast Oceans Of Wrath" on a barge bow? (The Hydrogen Sonata, which I heartily recommend).

Elliot, the azimuthing thrusters ( aka z-drives) are networked into an on board system called dynamic positioning. This computer system is able process inputs from GPS data, wind speed and pitch/roll sensors and then send commands to the thrusters to hold the ships position within a fixed area. The thrusters can spin around and increase or decrease thrust in order to hold position. The system is able to react on the fly to changes in wind speed, wave action or currents that might cause the drone ship to move. My guess is one of the support ships has a remote dynamic positioning console where a bridge officer could make adjustments as needed.

A few years ago I was living in Cape Canaveral FL and worked as a security officer for Port Canaveral. I had the honor of working the pier where they docked the SpaceX Drone ship. Whenever they made a successful retrieval it would dock there until they hoisted off the booster and returned it to the hanger. They would sit on the drone barge for a few days and so I got to get really close to them, and that was an amazing experience! My coworkers didn't understand my obsession, I'm sure all of you do. I'll never forget the smell of them. It was an interesting odor of burned stuff. Kind of like what you would imagine brimstone smelling like. Anyways, I live back in Oregon now so Florida is very very far away. The closest I get to a SpaceX launch now is on UA-cam! Well, that and the occasional fly over of a second stage burning up in the upper atmosphere. Wink, wink! I do get to keep the memories of my time down in rocket heaven though!
