Supremely played of course. Bream was unsurpassed, especially in terms of tone colour and passion. I had the pleasure of seeing him live several times during the 70's and 80's.
Excatly. He was such a special musician, an improviser, Jazz player, and his interpretations of compositions from Dowland to Contemporary are unbeatable. A real artist!
It's a testament to Bream's greatness that he inspired many composers to write such great music such as these bagatelles and,in a way, Bream 'wrote' the pieces as well because the composers 'heard' Bream in their heads when they composed. And he had such great taste in composers! I like John Williams and David Russell etc. but isn't it interesting that the new original pieces written for those two outstanding guitarists aren't even in the same class as the pieces written for Bream. That's what was so unique about Bream.
I have written like this before, but this video is what makes UA-cam so great. Here i am on a random monday, listening to this, out of the blue......effing fantastic....
they wouldn't exist without him not just because he commissioned them but because he inspired them - they were composed with his unique 'sound' in mind.
What a document! When I listen to these kind of performance I think that no repute exists by chance. I did not expect also that already since the mid 80's the original score was already investigated. To me study 10 was impoverished, not so much the 11. But can understand the Segovia choice, despite very disregarding the Villa-Lobos composing skill. Overall I appreciated n.5, 8 and 9, less 4 and 6. The 1 ans 2 without refrains seems quite less beautiful. Ritornello is not only for practice purpose but aestetically part of the form of the first 3 studies.
Bream was great. Can anyone tell me? : why he didn't receive knighthood? This is just crazy! Punk rock stars receive them, or did someone in charge drink too much coffee?
He most certainly should have recieved a knighthood..In fact it is disgraceful that he did not, he brought the Spanish Classical GUITAR to the Concert Halls across the world in the very finest way, the first Englishman to do that.
I always remember thinking in high-school : "Did Bream really feel passionate about these strange, incoherent compositions? Or was he just being polite to his composer friend?" I thought of the Bagatelles earlier today, and decided to give them another shot. I'm ashamed to say that, honestly, they are still not my cup of tea -- but excellent work by Bream, as always. I didn't pursue music as a career, so I probably have "tiny brain" on this one.
number 1 (not on this video) is a tough listen, but it's playful, at least. Number 2 (the first on this video) has moments of beauty and surprise. It's fun to play. Number three gets me inside! I adore number 3. Number 4 and 5 I don't know well enough to comment yet... But music is subjective. One person likes what another hates, etc.
Never doubt William Walton! Five Bagatelles are by far one of the best( if not the…) guitar compositions of the XX century… and Bream a dream in performance!

try isabella selder’s performance of these ! but in general, you’re absolutely right about bream

Er war unfassbar. Ich zehre seit 60 Jahren von ihm!
Er war ein großer Künstler in einem Heer von Sportlern, Nähmaschinengitarristen oder Stümpern.

So much feeling. Probably the most feeling.
@John Calder You are correct in that I don't give a damn. Your comment has nothing to do with the video.

These were written for him by Walton. Bream’s connection to these pieces can be heard and felt.

Hola maestro Julian.
Wow the way he uses the bridge and Saddle pickups just kidding 😅/ positions for different types of attack is amazing
8:18 at x2 speed is 😅amazing
Yes indeed George! It's sort of his signature move to do that back in time. Very effective in a way and can create big contrast!
Just loving the Walton’s amazing Bagatelle
3:33 ironically when the 3rd movement begins.
Crazy
How could the tv transmission of this bugger up at the end?
Máster 💐
And bagatelle no V.
Still the best
Jajaja
There isn’t a record of this session for the first bagatelle?

@@antonio_rioseco well said. they are exciting pieces! Put on headphones listen to JB own these pieces and dream of writing something so moving!
@@antonio_rioseco It is a tough world, Maestro Rioseco, too much people with a rock in their ears, brain, heart...
Always hard to like these pieces.
Try playing them and you'll have a different perspective to look at them!
Incredibly easy for my brother and me... a "To each his own world." We come from a jazz background, so altered chords are the meat and potatoes....
I find them incredibly easy to like. They are magnificent.
