You can totally down shift. Not in the convential sense but with proper throttle input the driver can get the clutches at just the right spot to slow down into the corner and be at a good ratio to launch out. Back shift is what we call it on sleds
I really wish this video had been edited together by an actual car person. Not once did we get to hear what this thing actually sounds like. I'm not even complaining about the music itself, just the god-awful hack job that pasted the music right over everything that a proper gear head would like to hear. Huge thumbs down.
Wondering how did you keep that engine cooled enough to not start sticking the pistons to the block cause originally snowmobile engines are built for colder weathers and warm temps would definitely affect the performance of it but all in all this is an amazing build!
If the production CVT's were easily accessible to service, there wouldn't be an issue but it seems impossible for manufacturers to make things easy to maintain
As both a car guy and someone who appreciates music made after the classic rock era that every other car guy is obsessed with, I say: This is a well done video! Don't get me wrong, there is good classic rock, but I can only hear the same 3 songs by Kansas and Lynyrd Skynyrd so many times a day before I need some electro, or pop, or classical, or acoustic guitar, or even occasional some carefully selected dubstep. I'm looking at you, every mechanic I've ever worked with at every shop ever. :P

As I was expecting to hear triple sound.. not shitty so call "music"... Yamaha triple has one of my favorite snowmobile engine sound = Off course i have one.. Aligment has to 100% correct or belts wont handle long (I use Yamaha org. turbo snowmobile belts in my triple)

its easy to keep it cooled, remember the orginal miata motor is much bigger
2 stroke engines run cool because of less moving parts. Less parts means less friction so less heat. As long as its liquid cooled, it should be easy
Those yamaha engines are pretty dam reliable. If you want to get really crazy look for a cat 1000 tripple engine they make 200+ hp with bolt ons
