Overall the RG503 is a huge disappointment. It could have easily been a solid middle ground between the RG552 and RG351 but they botched the specs and features of this Handheld. I sent Anbernic two emails for an Upgraded RG503 and a definitive Android Handheld. Hopefully they listen to me. Sunny Peng definitely got my Android Handheld email.
“It’s hard to keep up with all these releases.” Brother you ain’t lying.
They do it because idiots will keep buying every one that they release even if it barely differs from the previous one.
Talking about "perfect" - we expect a handheld which is capable of playing almost all of the consoles that have been on the market so far (except the latest next gen consoles) and we expect all of them to run flawlessly. This isn't an easy thing to do and they are always personal preferences that vary a lot sometimes. So to get all of those systems running flawlessly with perfect button layout and settings isn't easy at all. One prefers the d-pad on top, the other doesn't. Some prefer clicky buttons, others like them a bit mushy and so on...
To me the ANBERNIC RG351MP and the RG552 are kind of perfect as they feel really high quality with great d-pad, face buttons and especially the RG552 with a lovely display. Always depends on what you like, expect and prefer.
Yeah good luck with Excite Bike 64 you told me everything I need to know. Thank you.
Thank you for continuing to give us these detailed reviews. I purchased my Legends Arcade unit because of your content and have been happy with it, and also was finally able to fully enjoy the PS Classic because of your build reviews.
Keep the great videos coming. I am seriously considering this. That OLED is pretty sweet, especially it being similar to the VIta's gorgeous screen. I am a little concerned about the cramped layout though.
Thanks for the review, looks like I'll be passing on this one, and for now sticking with my Android phone, and a MOGA controller for my portable emulation needs, and Switch Lite for the rest.
You know he sounds kinda like Ralph from "Wreck It Ralph"
I’m always afraid to even get any of their handhelds because I think another will be out next month.
Why wouldn't they just ship it with the screen protector installed? Why not just use Glass?
I think the reign of the handhelds has arrived - More and more to fit different demands and budgets.
Personally I'm waiting for that one handheld gaming with a 9'+ screen, with i9 12900H + 3050ti equivalent to eventually come out and become my one and only gaming PC.
gl waiting for that one and enjoy the mortage payments to buy it. =p
@@criptin4075 It's not as unfeasible as you make it out to be.
I have an 13' Asus Flow Z13 - i9 12900H, 3050Ti, 16gb ram, 1TB storage + microSD gaming tablet.
Around the same price range of the Surface Pro 8.
Those specs fit a 13" tablet, it wouldn't be too long until equivalent specs fit into a 9" inch handheld device and need not cost significantly more.
I love your videos brother Thank You 😃
Tell the truth, I've given up on these devices and I'm just waiting for Valve to send me my ticket to buy the Steam Deck. These things are so fiddly and all over the place in terms of performance that a true PC with decent specs will always be needed to run everything properly.
Id rather have the Steam Deck than any of these devices for sure. I felt though I had to hold back talking about the Steam Deck in this video because I keep defaulting to mentioning it over other options and just wanted to showcase this thing without unfair comparisons to a handheld PC.
@@Madlittlepixel understandable, also the Steam Deck is a much more expensive device which not everyone is going to be able to afford. Also it's availability is going to be near non-existent with how popular it currently is and the still shortage of compositors.
I am really excited to get mine seeing how well it runs any emulators. Playing Resident Evil Outbreak on the go sounds awesome.
None of these handhelds feel perfect? The only retro handheld that merits that title will be the AYN Odin. Obviously not completely perfect, but man, they’ve made one hell of a good handheld without any glaring issues.
How is it with the d-pad so low? I would prefer the analog stick and the d-pad to be swapped as I want to use it for retro gaming. For modern games, I assume I would want the analog stick on the top. What are you thoughts?
@@retroman-- I was worried about the low dpad too, but it honestly doesn't feel bad! I can play original GB games for quite a long time with no issues. ❤️
@@Thunderhawk8472 agree i love my odin pro.. i even use it more than my steam deck believe it or not
How would these compare with the steam deck and the Ayaneo Next?
Idea 1: Removable analog sticks. Remove them if you don't need them.
Idea 2: Reposition-able inputs. Move the d-pad, buttons, sticks to anywhere on the device
It's hard to keep up with all the options and changes.
Ron, out of all your handhelds (besides Switch)...for retro gaming like this, which do you find you use the most?
In all honesty , ive never consistently fallen back to any of these devices as they all wind up being fairly similar. The only handheld I have found I use a lot is the Steam Deck, and ok its a huge ass PC handheld so not the same category as this stuff but thats the only handheld I want to keep around and actually use rite now. But out of all of the Anbernic devices the RG552 would be the one id more likely have if I had to choose one.
@@Madlittlepixel Thanks for the reply, the steam deck does seem to be a solid choice and good for the money, and the RG552 does have better cpu and good build quality just bad placement of the fan on the back, maybe its a speaker I forget. Form factor wise I want the PowKiddy 10Max 2 but with a better cpu. I already have a RK3326 device so no point in another.
Greaat video friend, I bought one of this console
I think that with the Steam Deck out it makes all of these other handhelds obsolete. The only reason I see to buy these cheap Chinese portables is of course the lower price. But darn they are always flawed here and there. It's all because China has no quality control. I'll buy none of them Chinese systems. Good review and cool video Ron!👍
I also think it's ver unrealistic to expect top notch quality, you get what you pay for. Many of the cheaper products are fine.
i didnt know contra was on the sega. does the konami code work?
Great video dude! Also I just got my email today for my 256 GB Steam Deck!
Thanks for the great video, I liked it so much that I bought the console! My RG503 arrived today, however I can't get a single game to work and I have run out of ideas!! I have tried Neo Geo, Mame, Megadrive, GBA, Capcom and Super Nintendo and none of them will load a single game. I press the A button and it goes black then takes me back to the game list. Any idea what's going on?
I'm still waiting for a model that can play "all relevant" retro consoles
What are the relevant consoles that's the case, as most out there play, the snes,NES, saga early stuff consoles just fine, forget trying to get N64, dreamcast, ps2, ps3 , to run good on these cheap handle held to run good, just not powerful enough to run with 1gb ram, going to need 4gb ram in device ,
@@tafsir5780 for me is up to n64 - but you are 100% correct - it's all a question of definition. to me it'd up to N64, because games after that feel like todays games, just with worse graphics. I'm not so much interested in anything - at maximum after the ps1 time - I was playing on the PC since then ;-) Have a nice day!
What is a good plug n play one that has everything from arcade to like 360 ps3 stuff I'm like kinda new to this stuff so I'm not sure what a good ones it anybody can recommend some ?
I’m struggling to find any information on a replacement battery for my RG503. Can you recommend any place?
Thanks M.L.P
Hey bud I didn't have any problems with my Ninja turtle just had to update that's all it did for me I thought it just fine and dandy
Do you think someday we'll get a handheld capable of better emulation? Especially with N64 roms.
Still waiting for a Anbernic that can play saturn games decently well or good
for at least play half of the library of the games very well.
Also for the Psp games that have more busy gameplay and graphics like GTA vice stories.
Be nice if someday Anbernic does make a two screens version, but that might cost more?
Like a one small touch screen and other bigger normal screen.
Why not just get a RP2+?
Yeah I would say it's like the OG Xbox because of the button display, and the OG GBA dipped in black. I might pick it up for my birthday next month. Some games I want to play without spending a buttload of money on eBay sellers that want to be schmucks on there.
these companies need to stop it for awhile til that add at least another core to the processor and can do ps2 fine
Do this comes with games installed already ?
Yes
Honestly I hope they upgrade this handheld with 2GB of RAM, Dual Boot with Android, and Touchscreen functionality implemented. I've fallen in love with the RG552. It's a pretty well rounded handheld.
The RG552 is awesome! Only battery life sucks so bad! Loses around 5-8% even if it's completely shut off and only lasts for about 3-4 hours while playing.
@@estylegreesye4384 The only thing that sucks more than the battery life is the price, and that's saying something.😂
@@MrCumstein True! :D
You might as well just use an Android phone, and pair up a bluetooth controller with a built in phone clip. I've been doing that for years, and it works great as I almost always buy a least a decent mid range Motorola Moto G series phone every few years for my main phone, and they run most emulators just fine.
@@MrCumstein rubbish, the wifi also suckz.
Wow they removed the logo
0:24 that sounds like some dating- and relationship-advice ;-)
can confirm that!
(Putin runs in and steals the potato grown in Chernobyl)
"Ha ha, potato eez mine! Now to made irradiated vodka!"
$150 is a little pricey.. But unfortunately, in order to get better feel, better play systems, you will have to pay $200 plus. This is why I'll be waiting a long time I guess..
I think the better option is to just use at least a 1/2 decent Android phone, then download the emulators, and ROMS. and then pair a bluetooth controller with the button layout you like(I've used a MOGA Hero Power for a few years now) that has a built in phone clip.
@@CommodoreFan64 I've never heard of that MOGA hero. But yeah I agree the processors in cell phones are much stronger and more reliable than any of these handhelds. Going downfall is finding reliable ROMs. Downloading those takes time. But I definitely thought about using another phone instead.
@@joeywilbur9182 MOGA was/is a sub branded of Power A that makes a lot of cheaper but still good controllers for consoles, and the MOGA brand was their attempt to get into the mobile market, but they kind of goofed up as the original MOGA controller required an app, and only worked well with games made for it, and had no d-pad just 2 Analog thumbpads, and it to get it to function in HID mode like most controllers you needed a 3rd party app that ran along side the official app called MOGA Universal to convert the inputs which was a bit wonky, but the controller was cheap, as cheap as $5 on clearance, and included a pleather case which was nice, so I have a few as spares, and they did fix those issues with the later models adding in HID, a D-pad, built in battery, etc.. , but I think the initial controller reviews really hurt them, so POWER A quietly bowed out after a few models, but if you can get them cheap like I did they are still a decent option, you will just have to side load the MOGA app, along with the MOGA Universal app with an APK if you use the original controller model however, as the app is no longer on Google Play store, but the others will function fine without it in HID mode.
greatl review
im a little late to the game and just got an rg351mp.
Don't feel bad. If it's good for you, that's all that matters.
I want the OneXPlayer or Aya Neo 2
Another some old sub par unoptimized handhelds they have released before. Notheing new. Thanks for reviewing.
All I see is old consoles old games on this handheld it’s got nothing to do with new releases you can still play these old consoles today there won’t be any difference at least when you play xbox 360 games on your xbox one x or series X they play better this handheld is for people who don’t own the old consoles
Can it play:
Halo 3
MvC2
Crazy taxi
Melee
Those are the only games I need
Guys just buy a Razer Kishi for your phone and end your search right there.
surprisingly, if it's got oled, then it's worth it! :O
This type of menu would make the 280v worth having. I hate the older menu file system . Update some of their old crap 😶😃
I want the PowKiddy 10 MAX 2....but I prefer if they threw in a better CPU. that White version is perfect for me, great shape, beautiful screen
I own one, too! But it feels cheap compared to all the ANBERNICS I own. I not only own the Max 2, also the normal RGB 10 Max in orange and both are great devices, though they feel cheap. The d-pad isn't great, the buttons are too small and feel very weird, even squeak while button mashing with all the typical beat 'em ups in the retro era. Still I like them, but I prefer my ANBERNIC devices and use them way more often.
@@estylegreesye4384 Thanks so much for the feedback. Reviews have been for the most part good on the device. But its important to have a good d-pad. I'm ok if it doesn't feel perfect but it has to perform well. Some d-pads as you press down, it moves in an downward right or left angle getting you killed. Which I have one good controller but i have to be careful on certain games lol
@@retroman-- yeah you're totally right! And though the d-pad on the powkiddy feels cheap, it performs really well. No complaints on that part!
I love gripp'n me some buttcheeks.
Oh I thought the best solution was to buy them all!!! =p
Bro. Playing Genesis stretched to 16:9.. I now doubt all the information you try to present.
I got this device in hand. EXTREMELY disappointed with poor N64 performance. @$150+ USD I would just tell people to get an RP2+ This device had so much potential as an android device, but they lowered the ram to 1GB and removed the optional EMMC storage. BIG let down.
😊👍
👍👍
I would like to see Microsoft + sony + nintendo + sega = joint forces team up and make a super ultimate console together. 🤝💯💥✔🔥
Ain't happening bro! I'd rather not.
Tech diarrhea everywhere. Too much tech.
Hahahaha yeah another hook to get everybody to buy another piece of 💩💩 people don’t waist money on this just buy Steam Deck the best .
