I'm a retired long haul trucker. I drove for 40 years. I could tell you some of my experiences that would raise the hair on your arms and give you chills. There is more truth than fiction in the old truck driving songs.
My dad, uncle, son, daughter & son in law were all long haul drivers. They my dad and uncle passed back in the early 80’s. My kids quit in their 40’s. It was just too expensive to keep at it. And yes, I’ve heard the stories. I’ve been in the cab and saw something’s I wish I hadn’t. Trunking isn’t easy for the driver or their families. Peace be with you and yours. Now go rest your weary bones in your recliner.
After seeing the movie "Black Dog" I asked my uncle about it since he was a long haul driver, and he said it ain't no joke, he'd seen it twice over the years, so I know these "stories" are at least based on truth, his career ended when he fell asleep behind the wheel and went head on with another semi and it cost him his arm, that was before all this electronic monitoring of drive hours ECT
I like to think that Big Joe and Large Marge are sitting in a diner somewhere, drinking coffee and swapping stories. My days as a trucker ended about ten years ago when my health made it impossible to drive safely. There's things I miss and things I don't. It's definitely a lifestyle and big commitment of time. Very cool that you're checking out some of the old trucker songs I grew up listening to. Hammer down, my friend!
I heard this song and TEDDY BEAR when I was a young boy listening to A.M. radio. I'm a 60 yr old truck driver nowadays closing in on my first million miles. You're right, we're definitely a different breed of cat, and this job ain't for sissies. There's a huge amount of sacrifices made, not only by truckers, but also by trucker families! Our time is not our own, but knowing how many people I help every single day, well, that's what makes it worthwhile for me. Everything you own came off of a truck somewhere down the line. Thanks for the mention and thanks for the song!!&! 🚛
First time I heard it was on the radio when I was a kid. Sovine wasn`t much of a singer, but he was one hell of a good storyteller. It`s pretty common to in country music to turn old ghost stories into songs. A few others that come to mind are "Wooley Swamp" by Charlie Danials, "Ghost Riders in the Sky" by Johnny Cash (actually everybody and their dog has done a version of that one), "The Miner`s Silver Ghost" by Merle Haggard, "Catbird Mine" by CW McCall, and lots of others.
Thank you thank you thank you I asked you to do this a long long long long long long time ago you finally do it I hope I hope I hope you totally love it and I hope you can understand it❤❤❤❤❤❤
Apparently, this is based on a true story the driver was somewhere up in the northeast I read the story a while back and can’t remember most of it, but you might wanna look into it

I heard this as a young child in the 60's, my parents had this record. Ironic that Dad was a truck driver during that time.
