Donna's husband Bruce Sudano is the guy in the video, who gives the main character of the video a pinch, after she comes out of the kitchen, in the diner. Donna's trailblazing continued with this video, as she was the first black female artist to be played in heavy rotation on MTV in August of the 1983. The song became a rally cry for people who worked hard and wanted to be treated right. The video a tribute to working women around the world, Donna also became the first black female artist to be nominated for an MTV Award.
Donna Summer has one of The all-time greatest voices in music history! Her live vocal performances later in life were Studio perfect! Gone Way Too Soon!!!
Thanks again for the Donna reaction you two!! LOVE HER!!! She actually started writing this song in the women's bathroom at an LA Restaurant. She was having dinner with her Manager I think and they went to the bathroom and it was chaotic in there...women everywhere. Donna looked over at the bathroom attendant and she was either asleep or almost asleep, staring toward the direction of a little TV that was on the counter. Donna thought to herself...wow, she works hard for the money. Then, it was like a surge went off and she knew she had a hit song. She talked to the lady (Named Onetta) and found out she was working 2 or 3 different jobs just trying to make a living. When Donna sings "Onetta there in the corner stands and she wonders where she is," that's who she's singing about. They just used a waitress' job for the video but really, it was inspired by this bathroom attendant. Onetta is on the back cover of the album with Donna :)
Brings back sweet memories... this song came out when I was a single Mom raising 2 girls on my own and somehow this song gave me a lift ❤ btw... my girls turned out Great, I'm so proud of them
This song was released in 1983. in the height of the women’s movement to fight for equal pay ! Lots of movies about it like 9 to 5, Working Girl, and more! The sad thing is we still don’t have equal pay ❤️❤️!
Many decades ago I watched her in concert sing the song and she was dressed as a waitress and the clients were her dancers Etc. She nailed in every way. Rip Donna
This has become an anthem for women, much like "I Am Woman" (by Helen Reddy) had done a decade before. You've yet to react to Helen, who had a nice little catalog of songs: "Leave Me Alone" "Delta Dawn" "Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady" "You and Me Against the World" "Angie Baby" "I Don't Know How to Love Him"
Jordan/Amber for your next Donna Summer, please do I FEEL LOVE, you will love the synthesizer!! It was so ahead of its time. You must do the live version, so you get to see Donna in action, she will mesmerize you!!! Jordan you will love it!!!!
My dad snuck me in to see Donna Summer in ‘78 when I was 4. She was unbelievable, I still Remember it so vividly because blew my damn mind. Check out Bad Girls, MacArthur Park, Dim All the Lights 🙂💃🏻🪩🪩🪩
Donna Summer could really sing. She had great hits like Bad Girls, Hot Stuff, Last Dance, and more, but as you noted, this song and its title line became a permanent part of our cultural vocabulary. Everybody knows the line even if they don't know the song.
Donna: My favorite singer of them all. Give her any genre and she could deliver it. Queen of one genre, but she mastered many others. "She Works Hard For The Money" is Pop/ Rock.
Hell yeah. Great 80s tune! If you want more "later" Donna, you can react to "This Time I Know It's For Real', "There Goes My Baby", and "Unconditional Love" (feat. Musical Youth). For more classic Disco Donna, you still have "Bad Girls", "Love to Love You Baby" and "On the Radio".
One of my favorite DS songs! There is also a really cool story behind it. Donna was attending a post Grammy party with her manager when she spotted this woman, a maid, slumped over in the corner resting her head on her hand. When Donna suddenly thought to herself "she (this woman) works hard for the money", and instantly thought that would be an amazing song. So, she runs into the bathroom and grabs some toilet paper and starts writing down her initial idea for the song. And if you look up the images for the album, you'll see Donna on the front cover in a waitress outfit. On the back cover you see her behind the counter of a diner with what looks like an ice cream sundae or shake on the counter with a menu and other diner stuff and standing beside Donna is the woman who inspired the song, her name was Onetta. "Onetta there in the corner stands, and she wonders where she is..." There is also a video here on YT where Donna talks about the song and this story.
I remember when I first saw this video and heard the song. It was on MTV, and I loved it. I hadn't expected Donna to be moving beyond her disco roots, but it was instantly my favorite song of hers.
The most impressive thing about Donna is the ease with which she had to bring out that tremendous voice that she had. There are singers who deform themselves whole, Donna seemed to enjoy it. And it was like that live.
The Queen of Disco Donna Summer❤️I would recommend “On the Radio” (my personal favorite ), “MacArthur Park”, “Love to Love You Baby” and “I Feel Love”🔥🔥🔥RIP🙏🏼
I've suggested this before... I always liked Donna's hit "I Feel Love". Very disco... with a pumping synth beat you can easily dance to... while she sings in her ethereal voice over the driving almost mechanical background music.
Amazing Donna! Love your reactions. Even though Donna was the "Queen of disco" she was so underrated, she really was the vocal queen that could sing any genre of music. She won grammy's in four different categories of music, including best female rock vocalist. Saw her sing live right before she died and she hit every single note just like in her origianl recordings.
Best part of this song is its based on a real life encounter Donna had with a ladies room attendant who was asleep during her shift. Donna invited her to and she is the featured actor in the video. Awesome tribute by Donna.
Donna Summer is definitely a deep rabbit hole. I would recommend you choose from among these songs as you continue your journey into Donna Summer: Bad Girls, Dim All The Lights, On The Radio, Love Is In Control, This Time I Know It's For Real, and Heaven Knows.
Adored her my whole life! Decades listening to this powerful talented queen. She belted out songs with such minimal effort. From Soul to Disco and even Pop. This song is an anthem that I still pull up when I need strength. 💖😎✨
Back that was back in my high school days and we played on the jukebox in the seniors court and you know what I'm going to tell you this right now A ever white boy a one I'm talkin all of them unless they was well you know if if I do like women they like Donna Summer it didn't make a damn more color Eros hell hard get real sissy
Can't remember if you've done Last Dance or No More Tears (duet with Barbra Streisand) - but both are a MUST listen. Sisters are Doing it for Themselves (duet with Aretha and Annie Lennox is the perfect female Friday song). You also have to check out Is There Life out There by Reba McIntyre. The official video is amazing - and the message is very much like this song. Very powerful
@Shannon Rasp I've suggested this a few times - but haven't gotten Amber's attention yet. You KNOW that they would both love it - and be absolutely blown away.
To stay on the Female Friday and disco vibe, I would suggest "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor, and "Stumblin' In" by Suzy Quatro. Just for Female Friday in general, I vote for "Crimson and Clover" by Joan Jett. She does an absolutely kick ass job on this cover. And please revisit Heart -- their version of Zeppelin's "Black Dog" live will give you goosebumps.
Can I add the following to your Female Friday /Disco vibe list Amii Stewart - Knock On Wood Penny McLean - Lady Bump Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye Tina Charles - Dance Little Lady Dance
This was a pretty big hit for Donna Summer in '83- '84. She had been pigeonholed as the Disco Queen and even though she kept recording throughout the 80s, her popularity (and hits) stalled. That was a shame because her voice was so strong and versatile, she could sing anything! Check out "Highway Runner" a new wave single included on the "Fast times At Ridgemont High" soundtrack in '82 (she'd done a whole album but it was shelved, and finally released after she died). Also "I Will Go With You" a translation of an opera song she recorded. It was a comeback for Summer in the late 90's/early 2000's.
So true in life!!! Great song. This song has such a great beat. You gotta dance. Classic for Donna Summers. Glad you loved it. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I have a friend in Australia whom I met 45 years ago in Greece. She came to the states to visit and I brought her up to Las Vegas, of course. This was in the early 80's and Donna Summer was playing at the Las Vegas Hilton so I got tickets as a surprise. It was brilliant and still to this day we talk about what a fantastic show that was. She was a full blown entertainer. RIP LaDonna Gaines.
Oh yeah!! Love Donna Summer! ✌❤🎶 Amber, love your t shirt! Love Stevie Nicks! I just love y'all!! Y'all do put a smile on my face. Thank you for that.. ☺😘
Woah. What a blast from the past you guys. Haven't heard this in, forever! I had forgotten all about it. Thanks for reacting to it, and reminding me just how good DS was. 👍🔥❤🎵🎼
I turned 18 in 1979….went to my first disco…..I walked in and they started playing Sylvester’s You make me feel(mighty real) great falsetto…..and they ended the night with Donna Summers Dim All the Lights…then I went home and listened to Quadraphenia by The Who…..
I introduced my kids to my music. This was my daughter's favorite Donna Summer song when she was little. Every day when I picked her up from school, I had to play this song!
What is truly terrific about this song. The video kills and she broke out of her disco shell. What a classic! Still waiting for people to pay attention to this song to this day.
The Donna Summers "The Disco Queen" a beautiful voice. Weather she sang alone or with other artiest love all her music. "MacArthur's Park and Mimi", a song dedicated to her daughter are my favorite. Great reaction!!
Maybe the most under-appreciated female vocalist of all time. What an instrument she had!!! There are a number of other Donna Summer hits worthy of a listen, like "I Feel Love" (worth it just for the instrumentation), "On the Radio," "Hot Stuff," "Last Dance," and the song that put her on the map, which, if you listened to the original 1975 long version, was a 17-minute orgasm, "Love to Love You Baby." But I would be remiss if I left out the song that might have showed off her amazing vocals better than any other song she ever released, the remake of the 1967 Richard Harris hit, "MacArthur Park."
I was 12 years old when this song and video hit and I was mesmerized by the voice and the story of the video! Early MTV! Lol This song was all over the radio. Donna Summer is a legend and her beautiful voice is SO MISSED!
I was an mtv kid when they started up in the early 80s being around 10?years old. This was one of the first songs in the batch they had in 1983. Videos were suddenly pouring out. In 82 they had few videos. One year later everyone was making videos. This Donna song was one that got played over and over again. No matter what was your go to. I was def leppard 100%, but enjoyed this song a lot. 1983 was an amazing year to sit and watch videos on mtv.
This and Styx's "Blue Collar Man" were from back in the day when rock had its working-class anthems that really meant something to the audience. Brilliant music.
Donna Summer the 👑 queen of Disco ⏺️ and in the 1980s she became the queen of synth pop dance 💞 luv it luv it her voice just goes so perfect with the music it was the right time in her career so beautiful.
It's so nice to hear a "Hometown Girl"! Donna Summers is from Boston ( Dorchester actually)! We've had a lot of Great music come out of Boston! Aerosmith, Boston, The Cars, New Kids on the Block, New Edition.
You want more DONNA SUMMER. You want SYNTH. "I FEEL LOVE" Do it. You won't regret it.
Yes! This one!
Hear hear!
Yes! at height of her Disco days! Last Dance is another great one and the official videos showing her perform are always best.
Yeees! I feel love... this is my fave by her!!!
No regrets at all
She was the queen of disco! Donna Summer had so many great hits.
“She works hard for the money”is so right! A women’s anthem for the day! Donna Summer was so hot… loved her! Rest in heaven!
But this was 1983 and Disco had passed away 💜😂🤪🤣😎

It literally ushered in electronic disco music. It was ahead of its time and still holds up today.
She was so beautiful and had a heavenly voice.
She wasn’t beautiful in 2000. Saw her live in Texas that year. Far and old, but she had a great career and her 77-81 pre mtv stuff is the best.
I played this for my daughter the other day…just so she knows. 😜 Great song. 🫶🏼
