      There were still a few around in the Panhandle as late as 1686. Marcos Delgado reported seeing some west of the Chipola River that year.

    What's so weird is that in 1821,Spain surrendered Florida in the US with no wars,then 77 years later in 1898,the US went to war against Spain and Spain once again surrendered PR,Phillippines,Guam and Cuba to the US.

      There were wars, they were just a few years earlier. The United States invaded Florida in 1818 and temporarily seized both St. Marks and Pensacola.
