Back to school: Parents join students at Northport

Remember back when you couldn't wait to get to grade school? Perhaps you couldn't wait for a school party or a special project.
You can see that kind of excitement reflected in the faces of teachers, students, and parents at Northport Elementary School in Brooklyn Center for Parent Involvement Day. Parents are invited to eat breakfast, lunch, or attend classes with their children. Brooklyn Center Firefighters help serve breakfast and students plan presentations and performances throughout the day.
"We believe parent-school relationship is so important. Parents need to come to school to so they can see what's happening in classes," says principal Leona Derden. She says the first parent involvement day held last year drew more than 350 parents and she expects more parents to stop by this year. "Because of that event last year, we have more parent volunteers than ever."
Derden estimates as many as 200 parents volunteer at the school each month. "That's huge and I'm so excited about that. We have awesome families," says Derden.
