There was a case in Pune where an upper-middle class Brahmin married man, software engineer working for an MNC, living in a good gated society was raping his building ke neeche-wala street dogs. My mom's friend is an Animal Welfare Officer. They did a sting. He was caught red-handed on camera doing it to 2 different dogs within a week. Another case happened in our colony (again upper middle class community in Pune, most of the people are educated professionals working in MNCs or overseas) where someone used a talwar/sword on a street dog. My mom was called on the scene (as an awo). The police had caught the man and he said he did because the barking woke him up at night. Police beat him up and broke both his legs. And that's not even counting the cases where they just poison them for no reason. My uncle lost his dog to a random street poisoning during corona. Two little puppies from the next building were also killed last year, someone fed rat poison in pedha to them. Being a part of the animal rescue culture is horrible, because u see the worst of humanity in the worst possible way. But it's also something that u can't leave from, because u can't ignore their voices anymore.
