I absolutely love how authentic you are in your videos! I’m very close to being finished with Grad school to become a teacher and I’m just so thankful to teachers here in this space who don’t sugar coat everything and share the good and the not so good. Thank you again!
Aww thank you!! I definitely don't want to sugar coat anything, teaching is tough!! But I hope by sharing I can show to rough and the rewarding as well :)
I love both weekly and day in the life videos, I like that we get to see a little more of your off time on day in the life videos and I like getting a more comprehensive look at what your weekly work schedule is like!
Hey Katie! You think that your first graders are funny when they play with animals, you should see sixth graders!! I just recently bought a container of rain forest animals and trees for free play and indoor recess time. When the my sixth grade boys discovered them, it was on! They were hilarious with their conversation and play acting. I loved it! I guess there's still a kid in all of us. Yes, I teach fifth and sixth graders but I still love to watch your vlogs!! Keep them coming!!!
The Phonics Decodables look awesome! 1. How long do you stay on a book with a group? 2. Do you still do running records? 3. Does the pack include lesson plans or ideas for implementation (or even comprehension questions)?
I usually have the student stay on a book for a whole week... I use them more in the second semester as a "warm up" during small groups. They come to my table and pick up their book and start reading right away for 3-4 minutes. I peek in and listen to them as they read. Then we sticky note their page and start our phonics mini lesson... Gives some good fluency practice at the beginning of small group! Then on Friday they write or draw to retell and I trade their book out the next week based on how well they handled that text. The books don't come with any specific lessons.
Loved this video! Please do more of these. I loved the idea of your Friday to do. Can you share some of the things you add to that list? I find that my list is too long to tackle and end up getting overwhelmed. 😅🙃
I try to add to the list as I think of things so I don’t forget them later on! I also don’t always cross everything off, sometimes I will leave things on it for the next day! Typical Friday tasks include swapping out my centers/sight words for the week, grading homework, reviewing next week’s plans, entering grades, sorting completed assessments into student data binders
Can you do a video on guided reading and guided math in your classroom? I just moved from 4 years in upper elementary to 1st grade and would love some ideas.
You mentioned that your contract hours start in 2 min. So what are your contract hours? Mine are 7:30 - 3:30. I like getting out fairly early, but I don't like how early in the morning we start.
