A total waste of money as a sporting venue. Capacity 55,000. Very rarely reaches a 10th of that for sporting events, unless Premier League football teams come to visit.
Its not just for a sporting venue, Its also for concerts and formal events that occur in Singapore. Anyways, Singapore have tons of money that doesnt go to use, so why not?
Not what i was expecting but much better. I liked your idea to base your list on the materials, it was fascinating. My personal favourites the cathedral of Florence and the stadium in Singapore.
@@andreamorganti6628 me too. I think it's because we live in Florence. Living in Florence, and seeing the dome everyday, you get so used to it that going to visit it feels useless. All other things are so close to you, that you don't feel the urgent need to visit them, as you can visit them any time you want, while when you are abroad you feel like you have to visit as much as you can, since it is the only opportunity. As a result, I almost know more about other cities than my city, Florence xD
Actually, the Pantheon was finished before the time of Hadrian. It burned down and it was rebuild. The completion of the second building was during Hadrians rule in approximately 126 AD
I was thinking the same thing. The Seattle-Tacoma area is home to some of the world's most impressive architectural and engineering feats, and yet it gets so little attention. Oh well, that just makes it the best kept secret.
Honorable mentions should probably go to Civic Arena in Pittsburgh which was the largest dome of its time and opened up, and the Salt Lake tabernacle which is impressive given it was built in the 1860s, in the middle of nowhere, with shipbuilding technology and was for the longest time the largest wooden dome on earth.
Loved this video but also would have loved to see more materials like largest marble dome, I believe that goes to the Minnesota state capital? Great video tho, I love domes👌🏼
Now THAT was interesting AND informative!!! Very difficult to comprehend the how the builders of 1,000yrs ago could conceive AND execute such mind blowing structures.
Thanks! We would love to hold it but the strain on our infrastructure would just be too great as of now. Do visit us though!!! I am a born-raised Singaporean who would be overjoyed to have such an honourable event hosted in my country.
I think domes just automatically make things look so much better and modern by how it looks and how grand it looks when placed into a circluar building or structures.
The University of Illinois Assembly hall was the first edge supported concrete folded plate structure athletic stadium in the world. It clear spans 400 feet (120m) with the edge made of miles of stressed steel cable creating a tension ring. The ring replaces columns and arches used to support conventional domes. The dome weighs an estimated twelve million tons.
Appreciate all your videos which frankly is like a university imparting such tremendous intelligent knowlege to all. Thanking you kindly. Btw you didnt mention the fact that the retractable roof of the Singapore National Stadium is also the largest digital screen inthe world if i recall reading it somewhere - both the internal & external sides.
Hey loved the video but theres a stadium in Sweden thats called "globen" which is globe in swedish and i feel like that building is big and should be on here.
Do fabric domed buildings not count? Like the old roof at BC place stadium used for the Vancouver opening Vancouver ceremonies. It was a Teflon dome that was supported by the air pressure inside the stadium
Have you seen the dome in Murmansk stadium (built by a Texan firm) built from cast in place solid foam and reinforced porous concrete layer outside of the foam?
Is the "Global Vipassana Pagoda" really a proper dome? I don't see the hemispherical element. It appears to be more of a tower than a dome. Specifically a tower sitting on a hollow conical base.
After the Superior Dome in Michigan as the largest wooden-domed structure in the world with 535 feet, the second of this type is the Tacoma Dome with 530 feet.
I love your videos guys thank you so much for all the work and research you put in .. can you please make a video About the florence dome i hear it's An engineering marvel
I watched to see if the Hagia Sophia and the Houston Astrodome were mentioned, but was disappointed. I don't care about the Astrodome but just thought it would likely appear in the list, but I'm really surprised the Hagia Sophia was not included. It's dome is a very nice example to teach about the architectural strength and weaknesses of dome structures.
checkout the Cargolifter-Werfthalle in Germany 210m or 689feet. It was build from a startup that tried engineering huge blimps to carry massive weights. Good old Germany and their blimps :,D
So, when this year world cup football in Rusia start, is it valid the largest dome of the world will be Cosmos Arena, Samara that consist about 2000 feet diameter??
We mention the Cosmos Arena in this video, it’s made of steel so didn’t feature here (Singapore wins that category): ua-cam.com/video/jJIcRRgzaks/v-deo.html
But the largest indoor dome arena is the Philippine Arena which also have 55,000 seating capacity.. originally it is designed to contain 100,000 seats but instead of doing that they made other area as hotel, different stablishments
I’ve stood outside of the Pantheon and I’ve been inside the Norfolk Scope numerous times. The rest are a no go for me. I have walked on the dome that is over the flat Earth 3 times.
You went from religious or state buildings to sports domes and did not mention the Houston Astrodome? I know you mentioned certain criteria but those other some stadiums wouldn't be there if it wasn't for the Astrodome
Factually wrong information. The dome of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was the largest pendentive dome in the world until the completion of St. Peter's Basilica, and has a much lower height than any other dome of such a large diameter.
I never knew that the Superior Dome was the largest made out of wood, even tho I live 2 hours away my entire life and have played soccer(football) and ran track there. That shocked me when I saw that.

I've always loved the look of the Singapore stadium, it's just different and for that reason beautiful
Couldn’t agree more.
It is a truly remarkable feat of engineering. It also looks a bit like a retractable telescope.

Good choice on going with variety of building materials. Amazing what the ancients could accomplish!
Great theme for this weeks video! Cheers :)

@Neel Javia Singapore already hosted the Olympics in 2010 Youth Olympic Games
The wooden dome category should give honorable mention to the Northern Arizona University athletic facility dome which spans 500 feet.
Very informative piece as always. I think there is a typo for the segment on the Florence cathedral dome - ‘masonry’, not ‘masonary’.
When I realized that under the Singapore stadium's dome there is a 7,5 hectares surface I could understand how big it is, incredible!

When I was growing up, in the 80's, the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington, USA was the largest wood dome in the world. I guess it lost that title.
It still is by volume, which likely means it's taller too.
Singapore, 6M people living on a postage stamp, very impressive.
