Coach's Cut Full Breakdown: halfcourthoops.substack.com/p/golden-state-warriors-2022-nba-finals 7 extra minutes of footage/breakdown, Celtics adjustments and a other film I am unable to show in this video! Enjoy!
I like how you included the soundbite of Draymond Green instructing Jordan Poole on how to best funnel ball handlers into the help; I thought I was the only one who heard that in real time.
This is elite defense. Statically the Celtics were better in the regular season but Golden State are on an entirely different Tier in the IQ department defensively and I don't think GS gets enough credit for how high IQ everyone is from the coaches to the players.
They’re two types of defenses, GS is more IQ based while Boston is a collection of elite athletes. It was a bad matchup for Boston simply bc they’re a team with only a few elite shooters and no elite playmaker. Basically making you make bad decisions
Celtics defense was getting it done in the postseason too. They were giving difficult looks to strong shot creators in the playoffs like KD, Kyrie, Giannis and even Jimmy Butler. All while making it hell for their supporting cast to try be efficient with their touches. Thing is when you get two teams who are the top defenses in the Finals, what can beat those out is how dynamic the offense is.
Finally someone who gave credit to warriors defense lol everyone else just kept saying "Celtics beat themselves by turning the ball over" This video proves how warriors MADE the Celtics turn the ball over and destroyed them
Felt like not enough was talked about regarding the Warriors defense compared to the Celtic’s in previews of the series. Golden State was right behind in the defensive rating and only wasn’t 1st bc Draymond was out for two months
A lot of Warriors regular season stats were misleading because of key injuries. Warriors were 1-3 against the Nuggets... Draymond didnt play a single one of those games. We all saw the difference he made in the first round
@@deiondre0 To be honest regular season numbers have a load of noise to make for comparable results for how it can play out in a 7 game series especially since teams easily ramp up defensive intensity in the playoffs. In terms of team defense concepts, consistency of execution along with the versatility to adapt to match ups is what can make the results sustainable come post season.
@@jbrandonf Agreed, but they were just echoing what the so-called "experts" were saying. I also remember people saying the Celtics coaches were better and could adjust in ways that other coaches couldn't keep up 😂
Very very good stuff. The Dubs have done this many times before. People forget that during the earlier runs the Dubs would consistently have the 1st or 2nd ranked defense headed into the playoffs, and every time the playoffs rolled around they got even better. I have seen the Dubs pump up their defensive energy and win on defense, people forget Steph has led the league in steals and scoring!
Awesome video. Feels like The Warriors this playoffs were a basketball nerd's dream: they ran so many different defensive schemes and they were all keyed in specifically to the matchups
Most “fans” have no idea how much basketball IQ is involved in winning. All they see is offensive highlights and determine which team has more “highlight” type players to determine a “better” team. Great breakdown of the Dubs high IQ players and defensive schemes tailored to beating a team. 🔥🔥🔥
Jason Kidd said the warriors are the only team in the league that can change their defense without calling a time out. That shows how high the team IQ was. Mike Brown was our defensive coordinator and I wouldn’t be surprised if he does the same in Sacramento.
Yes I concur!!! Excellent job bro...from the replays to the breakdown. After watching this I can't believe it took GS 6 games to beat them...shoulda been a sweep!!! It was like watching a pro team vs a college team...MEN amongst BOYS!!!
Great video. People wondered why the Celtics kept making "dumb" mistakes, well a lot of them were forced by an incredibly smart and disciplined defensive unit of Golden State. One of the biggest takeaways from this series vs the 2019 finals was how much better depth the Warriors had on the defensive end. Their guys in 2019 struggled defensively
To be fair Celtics later in the series were committing loads of dumb decisions themselves that were leading to easy turnovers. Not only Tatum's high average of at least 4-5 turnovers per game but the other ball handlers like Brown and Smart. The Warriors easily eat off those turnovers and turn them to points more frequently than the Celtics do theirs. Which was not surprising the Warriors bench later in the series was also scoring more than the Celtics bench.
Another Great Video! Media and analysts hailed boston's defense as probably one of the best in post seasom history. But Warriors just cranked up their defense to 200%
Great breakdown. Some small details that weren't talked about by other analysts are here. It makes me understand more about the game of basketball. Nice bro.
as a complete beginner to academic basketball strategy, i find these videos absolutely fascinating. i can't believe how much high quality content is on youtube today. what a time to be alive.
Draymond in the post interview after game one loss said something like "we're fine." He already knew they're going to win. That game one the Celtics needs a career night from two of their role players just to barely beat the Warriors, he knew they're in big trouble because that ain't happen again.
When Draymond helps, he fills the gap of what main defenders leave. There are four points on a ball handler that a main defender defend lower left and right and upper left and right. Usually lower points are for passes and upper points are for scoring. When the warriors main defense, alows help, he would cover two and leave the other two to the help defender. When Draymond told Poole to funnel the ball handler so help defender can cover two and he can cover the other two points.
As an avid basketball watcher (2 yrs now), I can't say this was "easy" to follow, because NBA defense is EXTREMELY complicated. But, this was a very interesting video and I was hooked until the very end.
Thank you for the breakdown Coach Pyper! You and Thinking Basketball were the only ones to give credit to draymond's defense this series, esp when the warriors changed his matchup and put him on brown. Did you feel that the warriors used less zone than they commonly did, because they were known for playing zone more than other teams, and it felt like they leaned away from it vs the celtics.
Yeah they used less zone because the Celtics had more counters. I remember a few times they deployed it, someone like White either got to the rim or Horford would somewhere in the high arc to attack the middle of it with his jumper.
Warriors & Steve Kerr are Kings of Adjustments, not to mention they have a Draymond Green. Give the Warriors enough good looks & time and they will figure out ways to stop you or force adjustments in their favor.
Steve Kerr made some fantastic adjustments like getting Draymond in low help and on Jalen. He also put Looney and Horford which got rid of the threat of the pick and pop.
Damn. I love hoops and watch a lot of analysis but this breakdown is amazing. So much goes into being an elite defense and it takes the entire team to make it work, it's amazing.
andrew wiggins was the 2nd most important player for the warriors in terms of defense and scoring like the dude was a real ALL STAR in the celtics series
Wiggins has been impressive this past season. He has the strength to push back against big guys and he does a good job of anticipating moves to counter them.
This is easily the most impressive and helpful breakdown of the 2022 Finals that I've seen, even if it focuses exclusively on defense. I feel like I learned so much...thank you!
At 7:20, when you talk about draymond growling at poole, telling poole too let his defender drive too the lane so he could help when pooled defender drives! That’s exactly what bogut and iggy were masterful at and that was (too me) the main reason the warriors lost the 2016 finals and how much that bogut and iggy injuries were too the warriors because that’s the defensive play that gave lebron fits
Great stuff, loved hearing the in-depth breakdown and analyzing not just what the Warriors were doing, but what they were trying to prevent or take away as well!
Great video, show this to all the people saying Draymond was awful in the finals and unplayable. I hated that narrative, at worst he was truly bad for 2 games. He still impacted winning
His subtleness (work that doesn't show up in the stat sheet) is what defines Draymond in defense and what makes him the best NBA defender of this generation.
I remember David lee dropping his coverage to shove draymond into position and draymond gets the block. Don’t know what the conversation was after, but no one has ever had to tell draymond where to be since. These guys hold each other accountable on defense and all have to be on the same page. Any mistakes you will hear about it, and will be expected to correct it.
Great analysis! I really learned a lot from how you put this all together and it was really good beginning from game 1 to see how the Warriors began to throw different defenses at them and in different situations. I really appreciate all of the work that you put into this and even though I'm sure it took many hours to do I bet that you had fun doing it also?!! Go Dubs!!!!
great breakdown! Analysts kept saying Celtics would win because of size and athleticism but the Warriors had a 'hive mind' approach to their defence. Everyone was so well connected and in tune with one another, they had such a great defensive plan and seemed ready for anything that the Celtics tried to do on offence. It was brilliant defence and it didn't get talked about enough until you came along. Great stuff!
Fantastic breakdown and attention to detail. Appreciate the incredible amount of work that must have gone into this and I definitely gained a ton of knowledge
I think your videos and just watching the warriors over the season has made me realize what really good defense is. Sometimes, its acting as a deterrent to take a shot but others', it's just playing the percentages and making sure that your opoonent can't take a good shot. just really great to see.
Very nice analysis and thoughtful insight. One point that I think you may have not gone over is the role the Warriors 6th, 7th, and 8th defenders on the court (dressed in black and white) played in helping. Their presence displayed what true championship grit through defense looks like on the largest stage.
Great breakdown. You mentioned it at one point, but in game 4 the Warriors finally started closing out and sitting on their right hand forcing them left consistently. That definitely increased the turnovers for Boston late in the series.
I have a question, were they closing out allowing middle even when the opponent was for example on the wing, in order to make them drive to their weaker hand? If so, i didn't notice that and it's crazy stuff, exploiting weaker hand at the nba level is pretty crazy, underutilized strategy in basketball
This is something to really consider moving forward when some younger team rosters mature that have 4 or even 5 guys who are 'decent' at handling the ball. Little details such as making them go left will be an interesting trend on defensive gameplans to see if it stifles those playmakers/shot creators.
ALOOOOOOOT of basketball knowledge thrown in this video. WOOOOOOW like basketball is not all about shooting and highlights. Players can create something by just moving around. And warriors are very skilled team to do it
This is awesome, man! Keep it up! I love this breakdown you did on the defense. Very concise and helped me understand what happened. Like you, I also enjoyed Warriors defense and offense. By the way, why do you think forcing them (Celtics) going left took out their kick outs? I heard this analysis from Draymond's podcast but he didn't explained it further.
Celtics players for some weird reason are dangerous when they drive right and make poor decisions when they drive left. Some players can't shoot leaning to the right and vice versa. Celts Achilles heel primary Is the left. When warriors realized this, they kept funneling them to that side. You'd notice Tatum misread the defense, jump in the air before making a pass and take highly contested layups, same with Brown, these led to turnovers and poor shot selection because they took away their strength.
@@pablobreezy1451 Wow! That's a good observation, Pablo! Thanks! By the way, do you think, the Celts has the capability to adjust on in an NBA Finals? Or do you think due to the limited time, they couldn't?
@@SandauxBeats they Swept Nets Won Bucks and Heats in 7. So I believe they're capable of making adjustments. They did in game 1 vs GSW, game 3 in the 4th Qtr. Difference in warriors series is they had Steph Curry and being battle tested, Golden state just had more experience. Strength in numbers is real. Curry's effect on any defense means if you play him with the drop like celts did, he can shoot from the parking lot. Blitz him with Double teams, Draymond Green is now able to be a playmaker like he did in game 5 and late in the 4th Q of game 4. Summary, Steph is an offence on his own.
@@pablobreezy1451 That's good observation. Do you think fatigue and having less depth in rotation were factors, too? Also, why do you think Celtics didn't use the Box and 1 defense? Or if they did, would it work? My apologies with the questions. I'm just really interested and curious with this series. 🙂
@@SandauxBeats one of their key issues was the lack of a point guard. The defense warriors played on them was highly underrated. They lacked depth as well. Their bench became a non factor after game one. Grant Williams,Pritchard and Derrick White couldn't buy buckets again. Raptors used box and 1 D on Steph especially when Klay and KD were out. Box and 1 was effective there because there were no other scorers. If Celtics used it, GSW still had Klay, Wiggins, Poole and Porter who could score. It's effective vs teams with one primary shooter. Their best bet would have been to switch everything like Houston did in 19. But Celtics defended primarily man to man after they hit a run of form. They changed their D in game 5 to stop Steph and Wiggins with other role players had themselves a feast.
Thanks for this breakdown. I would like to congratulate Boston for strategizing their way out of the East and making Miami and Milwaukee eat their words, you Coach for being able to get this far, but most importantly the Warriors for being able to pull all of this off!
Amazing video! Awesome content - Love to see the defensive breakdown! It is beautiful to watch, and even better when its broken down to the mechanism in this way.
Your channel is wonderful, and I think it's great to get some of your fast brains. I just think that maybe some graphics would be so helpful, like really pointing out over the video some of the stuff you're commenting on. Mostly because it's a lot of info! But dude I hope some big team hires you very soon: it's great!
Thanks for this analysis. It is important that we look at the numbers and the video to truly determine how the Warriors defeated the Celtics and not run with a 'narrative' of what they did. Miami's defence gave Boston a ton of trouble because all of Miami's players are 'stealers' who have good hands in isolation and in passing lanes. But \\Miami's D is best when it is given time to 'set up' and stay stationary this is why when Boston started moving around its' shooters and making early passes before Miami got set in place that the D in Miami got scrambled and it allowed easier passes and plays to be made. I think that Rob Williams played a crucial part in the Miami series to slow dosn Butler cause his midrange shooting gets nullified when bigs follow him around there and Butler has a weak game from downtown. Horford roasted the Bucks from Downtown because he knew that Lopez and Antetokoumpo were reluctant to switch to a popping big like him. Then he switched back and forth between popping and painting based on who was in the game and who was at the perimeter. It was Duran't terrible offensive playmaking that allowed Boston to mop the floor with them. Durant is a born and raised off ball kind of guy and him becoming THE onball player of the Nets is just bad offence cause he doesn't have good decision making in difficult spots and his playmaking i\when on-ball is really weak.
When talents and skills are almost equal. The difference is down to the coaching, it’s almost unfair to compare Steve Kerr to any current coach in the NBA. Then here comes Curry the game changer.
Warriors are gonna need Moody and Kuminga to step up defensively in order to repeat. I think Moody showed potential to play high IQ team defense. I need to see more from Kuminga. Wiseman is the biggest question mark in regards to this. That’s why resigning Looney was big.
Kuminga and wiseman will Never be able to emulate Otto porter, Belly And GPII High IQ and experience. especially this season. They were Foolish to let them go, the downgrade is real. I would trade Kuminga for Otto porter TBH
This makes sense to why draymond respects Luka and even more so Lebron. You can speed up JT and JB, funnel them into making bad choices but you can't do that to LBJ he is playing for mismatches and or creating lanes. Plus more consistent individual brilliance makes it hard to guard them one on one
"Defense wins championship" is a football dictum; where there are two teams, one playing offense and one playing defense. O and D are different players. In baseball and basketball there is only one team, playing both offense and defense. And it just so happens some players elect not to play defense, and some players are incapable of playing offense. This is where the Dubs shine; having superstars on offense and at the same time playing lights out defense. Like Klay, Wiggs, in addition to now coming into his own, Curry. On Kerr's team, everyone plays defense.

They changed their D in game 5 to stop Steph and Wiggins with other role players had themselves a feast.
This is so well done. Thanks!
I love this channel great defensive breakdowns every Time I love it defensive videos are great shows me how to be the best defender ever
Thanks for this breakdown. Nice commentary and great reads on what they were doing. Really helps in understanding what makes a good pro-level defense.
Thanks for this breakdown. I would like to congratulate Boston for strategizing their way out of the East and making Miami and Milwaukee eat their words, you Coach for being able to get this far, but most importantly the Warriors for being able to pull all of this off!
Absolutely incredible breakdown! Thanks!
Draymond impersonator lol
Your vid made me appreciate the Warriors more on defense! Great work!
great analysis! I think it might also be interesting to see breakdowns of coverage and how the team would try and fix it
Special mention to Wiggins, he was actually a different player suddenly when the playoffs come.
Thanks for the analysis, I appreciate the game even more
this was great. thanks for the breakdown.
Thanks!
When u watch warriors defense, its almost seems like they have more than 5 players on the court lol
Thanks for the breakdown. Really enjoyed it! It added next-level appreciation to what the GSW achieved!
Amazing video! Awesome content - Love to see the defensive breakdown! It is beautiful to watch, and even better when its broken down to the mechanism in this way.
Wiggins is a number 1 overall pick for a reason. The Timberwolves just didn't do a good job developing him.
This is the best defensive breakdown of the dubs finals run
Excellent analysis and delivery, some of the best I’ve heard. +1 subscriber!
Your channel is wonderful, and I think it's great to get some of your fast brains. I just think that maybe some graphics would be so helpful, like really pointing out over the video some of the stuff you're commenting on. Mostly because it's a lot of info! But dude I hope some big team hires you very soon: it's great!
Now I knew I wasn’t the only one that thinks Draymond Green’s main talent is his defense more than offense. He’s pretty much the modern Dennis Rodman!
Not so good in iso as Rodman but more clever .
I miss this Defense. Hope it comes back when it is really needed this season.
This is actually a battle of the nba's top 2 two way teams. It's just that gs has a better ofense because of steph🤤
High Level Basketball
Fantastic breakdown. Joy to watch. Thanks!
@ 3:20 it looks like Pritchards foot was on the 3 pt line.
Nice work coach. Loved it.
Amazing Analysis
Great breakdown, and awesome work by the warriors~
great video
great breakdown
This was brilliant! Subbed
Great breakdown!
Great analysis 👍🏾
Defense is the best offense
Great content man
Massively good.
It felt like if I was listening to Thinking Basketball just with a light hangover (lower pitch)
Love this video you got yourself a subscriber !
Awesome breakdown
Great breakdown! Will we be getting a breakdown of the warrior's offense?
Elite video man. Earned a subscribe from me.
What a video keep up the good work
Amazing breakdown! +1 subscriber here. Looking forward for more.
Amazing content watched the whole thing keep it up earned a sub fs.
YES MY GOLDEN WARRIOR CURRY. CATCH HIM IF YOU CAN.
Who’s here after the Celtics finals win?
Incredible video.
It’s also crazy that Celtics would need to have a historic shooting night just to win a game. Yeah they only had 2 games
