I've wondered often why you know so much... You took a 'Master Gardening' class. I love it! You're always so informative and you make it sound fun. I myself love watching growth from seed. To watch a mango tree pop out of its seed shell is absolutely fascinating. Thank you Janey. Your Daughters are so sweet!!!
Just thought that I would share this to help save money for others. Those wire plant covers are the exact same that is available at Dollar Tree in black and white for $1.25. each.
worms love advocado skins too - they use it to eat and hide in. Stay away from any kind of onions, garlic, or citrus - they don't like it. Egg cartons work too. Your property is looking just amazing! So happy for you and your family. Annie's Annuals has been sold to the Hageman family - owners of Grow Organic. The employees purchased the nursery. So Annie's should live on!
You are too young, but there was a TV show called WKRP in Cincinnati. They had an ad that ran on their show that was for Red Wiglers, the Cadillac of worms! Lol
Very informative video, enjoyed the hot air balloons and Monte's reaction. Your daughters are growing up to being fine ladies thanks to you and your husband. Chickens are adorable and are well loved. Always enjoy watching your videos. 26:57
Hi Janey, how fun for the girls and you to see the hot air balloons so close! Monty did not know what to make of those things, but he needed to scare them off.😆 I had a worm bin for 15 years. A friend who’s had one for nearly 30, gave me a bag full of worms to start. I have a bin that my husband made me of three-quarter inch plywood and it tucks under my potting bench so tight that the raccoons, skunks and rats can’t get to it. I rough dice my scraps. I also add eggs shells for grit. My worm bin is teaming with worms and I’ve never had an escape in 15 years. Putting a worm basket in my garden would be a nightmare… The skunks, raccoons, mice, rats, and moles would be celebrating! The soil from my worms is black gold! I’ll be interested to see how the garden bed system works for you.❤
I'm so happy you did a video on this.I love it, few tips: put your food scraps on the counter for a few days in a ziplock and then the freezer, worms will eat moldy food over fresh, plus it kills off some bad stuff and adds moisture when it thaws. Avacodo shells are their favorite place to have their babies.. I use my old nursery pots, and we all have a stack of them! I don't add any extra holes to the pot. You will get over the worm icky once you see the little amber egg sacks.. 😂
The wire baskets also make great cloches for new or transplanted plants. Put them over the plant and fasten them down with a landscape staple or two. Keeps the bunnies out,
OMG!! I moved to Arizona about four years ago and almost immediately bumped into Angela from Growing in the Garden. For the last several years, I’ve been a member of her growing in the garden Academy, and for anybody who is growing in incredibly difficult conditions, including those in the Davis, California area her content is extremely valuable. I cannot recommend her more. I added worms to my raised beds last fall. And this summer was the most productive and my bed soil looks amazing and I haven’t had to use external fertilizers. Love from Arizona 🍋
Interesting information on Worm Bins. Hot Air Balloons -- Nice Addition!! Monty is a Smart Student!! Nice that you and the girls saw the Hot Air Balloons Together!!
Vermicomposting has always been so interesting but yeah I absolutely did not want to deal with escalating worms. I love the idea of in garden bed! Thank you for sharing all this great information. The balloons were so cool!! What a funny thing to happen 😀
Hi Janey, great idea worms are so good for garden beds. In your hot climate it might be a good idea to have your worm bins more in the centre of the garden beds rather than up against the metal sides. It might be too hot near the sides.
A couple of helpful tips, worms like to be in the dark. I watched a video of a man harvesting worms himself by using an old bathtub, he would cover the bed with a layer of cardboard, when he wanted to harvest them he would uncover half and the worms would all move over to the shaded side by the next day, where he could reach in and harvest them in clumps to move them around in his garden areas. Another video showed a man with raised garden beds, each day he would go out and dig small holes and put his veggie scraps in and cover it up, worms would take care of the scraps on their own. So basically, each day new trowel spot and dump them in. He showed where he put a corn cob in and came back 6 months later and it was almost gone. Was very interesting.
So happy to see Angela with Growing in the Garden a Master Gardener in hot dry climate. Knowledgeable with a wonderful happy disposition. 🌱I refer to her videos for central California and Las Vegas NV. All zone 9 w/many similarities 🌱the cage containers are sold at Dollar Tree for $1.25 Janey I think you’re going to find this way of composting sustainable and easy. Hope you all get a chance to visit Angela with Growing in the Garden. She grows everything in the heat and drought conditions of Arizona!
Many years ago when warm farms were "in" I made one with a large tote. It was fun in the beginning but a bit gross, I lived in a condo. So the one take away from that venture is I now always buy a big bag of worm castings and a handful of that goes into every planting hole. When I was over the worm farming, I took the entire tote and dumped it into the small garden space we had and quite frankly never looked back. I'm in the Midwest so we have to deal with frigid temps, etc. You can make "worm tea" and that liquid from the worms is wonderful for your garden too not for drinking 🤮
I used to crew for hot air balloons when I was 18. So fun to see them in your area, but let them land in the field around you not in your garden - you are right the envelope (what you call the top of the balloon) would destroy several plants! Thanks for sharing this information about vermicomposting - I had the same fear about escaping worms! I learn so much from you and your videos.
I got a handful of worms from my brothers worm composter about 40 years ago, I’ve still got my two worm farms with the descendants, and they eat everything, citrus, onions, prawn shells, you name it. I never have much compost though, they are too efficient!
Hi Janey🌺 . Good compost project with these worms and what a beautiful view of these a hot air balloons they were amazing from above you and your daughters .. . Have a lovely day .🌺🌻🌺
Another tip. Rinse out your egg shells and let them dry over night,I bought a coffee grinder at thrift store, grind up egg shells and put in a mason jar with lid, everytime I add food scraps I sprinkle a little of this egg shell power to the top.
Well good morning janey monty and girls.🎉 What a treat to see the hot air balloons today. The unexpected is always the best happy gardening with your compose yuk Have a blessed day the oklahoma gardener😊
Seeing those hot air balloons reminded me of my childhood…we use to see them every weekend out our back door and yard. They would have races with them. They were beautiful! Great memories! Thanks for sharing those hot air balloons.

You’ve said you’re close to an airport - I’m surprised they allowed balloons close by! We used to have an annual Hot Air Balloon Festival in the town I lived in, it was very cool.
Janey, coffee ground and crushed egg shells sprinkled over the food help the worms digest the foods. Also shredded paper can be used instead of wood chips.
Nice video. Thanks for the lesson! FYI I got very similar "trash bins" at Dollar General or Dollar Tree for $1.25 each. I enjoy watching your channel. Keep up the good work
Never knew it was called vermicomposting ! Worm castings is the best natural fertilizer to use some soils contain worm castings, to buy it by itself is costly, but pretty basic to do yourself... those hot air balloons were pretty cool to see up close.
You were super brave with the worms I am not a fan of touching them even with gloves. It was soo cool too to see the hot air balloons. Such a beautiful day to be in your garden ❤
I bought wire wastebaskets at the dollar tree for using over plants just starting and they look pretty much like what you ordered from Amazon, they were a 1.25 a piece!
Hi Janey, did the educator on ‘in garden’ vermicomposting address possible issue of wildlife or vermin of being attracted to the food scraps ? 🌸🇨🇦 I will follow Angela’s channel.
Hi there. I have done these garden bed vermi composting. I have issues with rats so I put a cover over my baskets that I can easily lift. Hope that helps.
Thanks Janey - another great video. In New Zealand we put worm farms under trees in the garden. Our compost bin is on the ground in our vege garden and the worms just find it. Did the master class tell you that the one thing worms don't like is Citrus? Thanks again for great content.
I love worms in my garden but yep if they were in my kitchen I would be screaming lol, but oh my goodness the hot air balloon’s so beautiful and so cool, Monty is like “Hey get outta here” 😊❤️🐾🍂🍁
Awesome project. I want to do this in my beds. Do you pick up the wood chips in each port to add the new kitchen scraps? Or keep building? Thanks for all the info on worm castings and killing the bad bugs. Totally going to buy a few more bags of worm castings at Costco this year to spread on the aphid infested areas in my garden this fall/spring.
Very interesting. Question: why do you not put those in the landscape? Why do you put them in the beds? Love how your garden is taking shape. The change is so unbelievable. I love all of the tree planting.
In bed is awesome. We had a worm bin composter, and it was messy. Nkw that we live in a more extreme climate the worms are in the basement😐 The castings are gold though. You may find that it is best to shread the cardboard and the scraps more finely than you did. Also going into leafdrop season, the leaves are great brown material.
Great idea. Unfortunately we have raccoons (we have a pond in the garden) that love to dig up my plants at night, leaving them to die, just to get at the worms and other crawlies in my gardens. I go out at sunrise every morning in my pjs to replant whatever they dug up overnight. I think doing the vermiculture directly in the beds would just encourage more digging. 🥺 We do have a lot of redworms in our compost bins though, so still get some advantage from worm castings when we use our finished compost.

Very cool info. Q- When you add more scraps, do you just dump on top and add more wood chips, or do you dig down to the kitchen scrap layer? Oh, and I loved seeing the fly by hot air balloons! I bet Monty wanted to play with those giant balls!!
We have a stinky yard right now too! The hubs hauled in about a ton of chicken litter compost (central Louisiana) and it is still a bit ummm ripe 😫. Hi Janey - the message you inserted on the screen by Monty that said "Hello my friend, soon you'll be mine, don't worry" - does that mean Monty will eat the worms? It was at the 7:37 minute mark...
Is the drip on in the beds all of the time? Do the worms die if the bed gets too dry? Can you do this in in ground beds with no drip or do the worms leave? I’m so confused about how they survive in such dry fluffy looking beds???
What's the difference between this and trench composting? Not sure I understand the benefit of buying in worms and then adding them to your soil that probably already has native worms that would do the same thing. What am I missing?
Well that made me stop eating my lunch. I’m fine with worms in the dirt, but seeing a pile of them wiggling around like that, kinda grossed me out. It’s like Halloween came early.
I've wondered often why you know so much... You took a 'Master Gardening' class. I love it! You're always so informative and you make it sound fun. I myself love watching growth from seed. I got my wire bins from The Dollar Tree. (I’ve used them as garden cloches for years.)
Janey thank you for Angela’s information. I have been searching for a channel targeting those living in the Phoenix metro! Thanks a Million!
Never knew it was called vermicomposting ! Worm castings is the best natural fertilizer to use some soils contain worm castings, to buy it by itself is costly, but pretty basic to do yourself... those hot air balloons were pretty cool to see up close.
Hi Janey, a lid of chicken wire on top of vermicomposting might keep critters from getting to kitchen scraps.
So happy you’re getting eggs 🥚!
You were super brave with the worms I am not a fan of touching them even with gloves. It was soo cool too to see the hot air balloons. Such a beautiful day to be in your garden ❤
I'm in KS. We just go to the local bait shop and buy a couple dozen worms and place in the garden. We love hot air balloons here!
I bought wire wastebaskets at the dollar tree for using over plants just starting and they look pretty much like what you ordered from Amazon, they were a 1.25 a piece!
I laughed at Monty with the girls soccer ball. My granddaughters are constantly rescuing their soccer balls from Nellie their golden retriever.
Wow, that balloon came close! 😲🤩
Very interesting ❤
I found this very interesting. I have heavy clay soil in some of my flower beds and may try this to loosen it up. thank you for the info!
Hi Janey, did the educator on ‘in garden’ vermicomposting address possible issue of wildlife or vermin of being attracted to the food scraps ? 🌸🇨🇦 I will follow Angela’s channel.
I was just wondering the same. I tried in ground without the baskets and had a vole problem that followed. But I think the baskets might help.🇨🇦
Hi there. I have done these garden bed vermi composting. I have issues with rats so I put a cover over my baskets that I can easily lift. Hope that helps.

We have hot air ballon flying over Kalamazoo often. Nice treat
Hot air balloon rides are amazing!!! Whoda thunk that worms would be so interesting.
Oh I love you Monty!!!
Very interesting
Great video💕
Interesting…going to have to give it a try!

Monty is adorable ❤

Many, many years ago we lived in Sebastopol, and the school was right at our back fence. We had a hot air balloon. I guess it was having some complications landed back there, and we had a St. Bernard, and he didn't like that balloon! I am 5' 1"ish it was all I could do to hold that two hundred pound dog back from going over that fence.
Our dogs get upset whenever hot air balloons float by. I think the noise from the flame burst hurts their ears. But they give such a nostalgic feeling whenever you see them. I wonder what a cluster of hot air balloons is called?
I’m looking forward to seeing the progress of your vermicompost project.
Wire baskets at the dollar store for 1.25….great for the garden!!
Janey, will you just put the kitchen scraps on top of the wood chips? Or do you need to push them aside and get them under the wood chips?
We were going to ride in a hot air balloon in January but it was to windy, that was in Napa
I have a worm bin but it's always wet because we get so much rain here in Florida. Lol
Interesting
Maybe a silly question, but don’t the worms just escape through the mesh? Do you move the mulch to give the scraps? 🇨🇦
Are you going to do it in your Virgo beds?

So sad, we had to drain and store our hose link for the winter here in Michigan.
I have invasive jumping worms and I think they have chased off the other worms in my soil.. hate those big snake worms

Amazon boxes are apparently treated with pesticides I’d read don’t let your pets chew them. Not sure if that was a Amazon box you had.
Amazon put out a statement that they DO NOT spray their boxes! ❤
@@tlcgarden2300 thanks I had not heard that.👍
I don't understand why you have a bin inside your bed. Will the worms stay in the bin Will you mix up the soil in your bed
Finished compost shouldn’t smell, maybe you got some uncooked.
If u smear a little dish washing liquid around the top of the container they will not crawl out past the dish soap
Oh sorry I thought u were gonna leave the worms in the keeper
Ot seems like the worms would just stay in that one area and not go through out the entire bed.
You don't cover the kids pools with the sand in them I thought the cats came in there ?.
Well that made me stop eating my lunch. I’m fine with worms in the dirt, but seeing a pile of them wiggling around like that, kinda grossed me out. It’s like Halloween came early.
