In his new book ‘A Brief History of the Present’, author and scholar Hilal Ahmed has tried to reimagine the space for minorities, especially Muslims, in the “new India”.
In a conversation with Manisha Pande, Hilal says the Muslim community is usually represented by two extremes in the media - either fundamentalist voices or individuals who criticise Islam. Meanwhile, Hindutva politics has continued to gain strength, with secular parties failing to voice concerns fearing a loss of Hindu votes.
Amid this, historical figures such as Aurangzeb and Maharana Pratap have been politicised. Hilal says Aurangzeb’s heroic image is a creation of Hindutva politics. But how? And who is the true Indian Muslim? How does the community engage with politics? How do Muslims look at Islam and how can they negotiate their space in the new India?
Hilal says, “Figures like Rana Pratap and Aurangzeb are political figures. These are not historical figures. There wasn’t any Mughal state. It was a Mughal-Rajput state. It was a Mughal-Rajput state even during Aurangzeb. So when a temple was demolished, what were the Rajputs doing?”

Going by this logic, there was never a British Raj, because the government was mostly Indiannif you go by the numbers. Secondly, the Britishers are not responsible for the impoverishment and the famines that occurred in India, because the Indians didn't object when the British were emptying India of its wealth.

The British emptied the coffers of India and deliberately enacted policies that promoted the starvation and weakening of Indians so they remained in servitude and not a threat to the British raj but at the same time the British imperialists laid the foundation of modern India through sweeping social reforms, democratic institutions, civil services, schools and colleges, hospitals, railways, roads, bridges, ports, cities, town planning and civic infrastructure, posts and telegraph and the English language. It was more of a Jekyll and Hyde rule.
There was no “Republic of India” just as there was no United Kingdom or United States of America. British - or rather just the English (not Scots or Irish) - came to India and used citizens of Rajput Empire against the Citizens of Maratha Empire (just an example - not suggesting this is what happened). So this idea of India was enslaved is not enslavement of a political entity but a geographic region called India.
Yes Mughals who fid invade were of Turkic origins and most who joined them were geographically Indians. Nader Shah - the Persian hated the Mughals and plundered Delhi - but went back to Persia. So a Muslim ruler of Persia invaded a Muslim empire of the Mughals, it was just business.

In Mughal Rajput Era, there were Rajputs in POWER with rulers. They would have objected if Govt demolished Indian Culture or Temples.
Same way as we did in British India, we have numerous proof that Indians were not party to atrocities. Revolt of 1857, was just a perfect example, non cooperation movement, swadeshi movement etc
But why cant Rajput did so when Mughals were on demolition drive in India.

another question to the scholar sir I may be wrong, Is it true that when Akbar took over the kingdom at young age., he was comparitively ignored by Nobles of Tukish/Persian origin..who felt they were more suited to run the state that the young boy. To strengthen his position, he aligned with Rajput., but still from whatever i read..atleast 70-80% of rulers in Akbar time were muslim not of indian origin., but turkish/persian origin. It was higher amongest his ancestors.

Rajputs were a part of Mughal nobility, but that doesn't justify calling Mughal state as Mughal-Rajput state. Because there were many many others nobles such as the Afghans, Turks, Uzbeks, and most prominent ones were mostly Persians. Later even Marathas became part of Mughal administration.

Makka was made my Adam (a.s) but they didn't made the idols. The history is long and interesting try to find out on UA-cam or Google how and why they were built in makka after Adam (a.s) died.

Dear team News Laundry, I humbly request to have a look on this comment.
The arguments given by Mr Hilal need to be rationally countered rather than nodded just because he’s a professor. I’m raising only three points:
1. “Mugal-Rajput state”: He’s confusing the audience with the word “State” and not using “Empire”. He forgets to say there was Mugal-Rajput state under Mugal Empire. On temple demolition, he asks what were Rajputs doing in that state?
Now, will it be valid to ask what were Rajputs doing in the British Empire and therefore Rajputs are also responsible for whatever wealth British looted from India and the rest of the other atrocities?
Rajputs were trying to survive, they fought with Mughals (Rana Sanga, Ajja Jhala and more) and they mostly lost, they had to work with Mughals, that doesn’t mean they agreed with each and every thing what Mughals were doing.
For example, Mr Hilal must be asked if Rajputs were happy with Mughals imposing Jizya tax?
2. He says, “this heroic image of Aurangzeb is outcome of Hindutva politics “! Really? He’s mocking history by saying this. Aurangabad is cherished by Muslim community from the time of his reign. This notion must have been countered by the anchor.
3. He says, “… figures like Rana Pratap, Aurangzeb; these are political figures, these are not historical figures…”. On what basis he says that? Is it on the basis of how people or a group of people see these figures or he’s saying in the context of history writing?
I feel things must be put in an unbiased manner rather than seemingly leaning towards any particular direction and anchors asking tough and logical questions to any so called scholar.

At 7:12 of your video Hilal Ahmed stated: "Demolishing any place of worship in Islamic sense is absolutely not permissible". I think Newslaundry should have asked him to provide any reference from Quran and Hadith prohibiting or declaring it Haram to demolish places of worships of Kafirs (Non Muslims). I think that Hilal Ahmed is incorrect is saying so. As per my understanding the fact is that Islam requires the demolition of places of worship of Kafirs.

Religious extremism has to be rejected by people of that particular religion only that way can people rise up and prosper. Hindus have mostly been able to do that, they have slowly and steadily rejected religious dogma and chosen logic and science primarily and religion as a spiritual guide. Most of the Hindu society has achieved that. This path actually has been shown by the Christian community in India. While on the other hand the Muslim society majorly has reform itself from within. They have to reduce their dependency on religion for community building. The elite Muslim has used religion as a tool to remain elite and rich within their own community all the while spreading dogma within their own community to remain influential. The same strategy is used by BJP walas who have gained power through religion. The always try to spread dogma and fear in the Hindu community for their own relevance. But Hindus are smart to realise that from time to time. Most muslims on the other simply are happy playing the victim card.

Please dig a little bit deeper and you will find that even when maratha, sikha and jats were fighting to finish the Mughals, Rajput's were with Mughals. Even at the time of partition, many large rajput states like Jodhpur and Bikaner wanted to join Pakistan as they were comfortable with Muslims. After independence, due to dalit assertiveness, Upper caste were fearful that's why they entered into a political alliance with Rajputs and made them acceptable. Otherwise in pre independence era , they were hated equally by lower caste and upper caste people for their support to earlier Mughal and later to British rule.

Mr. Hilal, I think it will be better that Muslims acknowledge the history of Islamic Iconoclasm. The moment you uttered "when a temple was demolished, what were the Rajput doing", you are compromising your secular credential.

He is absolutely correct that it was a mughal-rajput state, hundreds (if not thousands) of royal rajput girls were married into mughal nobility throughout mughal rule. rajputs were always shoulder to shoulder with their supreme mughal masters when mughals launched all out campaign against marathas in deccan, same rajputs were the major roadblock for marathas in north India after annihilating the mughal power and putting puppet of their choice on mughal throne. Some rajput royals even helped that barbarian afghan looter abdali in third battle of Panipat.
