    I have viewed several vids on Hedgehog leather sheaths and the opinions are the same, "too expensive". Well, speaking from experience of someone who does handemade leatherwork, the price is more than fair for what you get. From video I've seen from both the manufacturer and reviewers that is a high quality product. Well built and rugged. I would guess that your grandchildren would get that sheath after your children were gone and it would still be a beautiful piece of work.

      As someone who is an "experienced consumer" in quality leather goods ($300 for a shoulder holster, $200 for a belt etc). I wouldn't think twice about paying $150-200 for a sheath. I just don't see value in the $300 price tag. Especially when equally respected makers charge half as much for the same quality work/product.
      Handmade/custom leatherwork pricing is always horribly subjective when it comes to pricing. You agree with what he charges. I don't agree with what he charges.

    Go to Ian Atkinson's Leather works channel here on youtube. He has several video's on how to sew a proper saddle stitch by hand and even one on how to make this specific style of sheath. Get on Amazon and purchase or make the few tools you need to make something like this, then purchase the leather, needles & thread, and make it yourself.

    I would pay 300 for it. but I don't have it. people say it's crazy to spend more for the sheath than the knife but you can replace the knife if it breaks or wears out and put it back in that sheath. the sheath will not wear out or break

  • @CtPirate

    Leather work is incredible and no doubt its the best quality, but $300 for a sheath? DAM you can buy two of the knifes for the same price as that sheath and lose one of the knifes and still be ahead of that price. If I was to use it daily or even weekly I'd consider it but at that price point "two thumbs down"

      Knives are probably like handguns -- the holster/sheath is every bit as important to comfortable carry, long-term protection of the weapon, and smooth, reliable draw. This might not be a realistic price point for some folks, but the smart route is never to skimp on your leather/kydex.

      @@m.kultra4101 as someone who works with leather I don’t know about that. The time spent working on a pattern to fit everything perfectly is going to add up fast, and there is a lot of work involved in making a standard sheath let alone one with the added complexity on this one.

  • @SirAvath

    Leather sheaths and 1095 steel , worst possible combination on humid environment. If you "go wet" the leather will just keep the humidity inside resulting in rusting your blade. Happened to me 1 year ago and since then i decided to keep all 1095 blades only in kydex sheaths. So even if its a very good product its very impractical for high carbon steels .

    i think my point was that the price is just unaffordable for many of us. Especially now days. I would sell my work for much less personally and i say that as a tattoo artist. The supplies to make the product cost nothing com paired to the price paid just like in doing tattoo's if i had the know-how to make a sheath like that i probably would sell it for cheaper, kind of like i do when i do tattoos. More about getting my work out there than making a killing off it. the sheath is very nice though

    • @h2oGrunt
      @h2oGrunt 10 років тому +3

      Don't get hung up on the "Made in China" dogma pricing. If you want a professional hand-made leather product of this quality, then this price point sounds about right. If this takes about, say, 10 work hours to make, then he's only getting 20 to 30 bucks an hour. Discount with that the price of the consumable materials used and the amortised cost of his tools, along with other business expenses, and you're getting top-of-the-line craftsmanship from someone who's making maybe 13-15 bucks an hour. Even if it's double that (ie about five hours work), you'd still be getting a deal.
      What's outrageous here is your lack of sensibilities to a craftsman's work and the economy of hand-made quality products. You want Walmart prices, then go to Walmart. But don't insult hard working people that are dedicated to quality products by offering up sweat shop price points.

    • @fatdan172501
      @fatdan172501 10 років тому +3

      h2oGrunt
      no one was insulting anyone jackass im well aware that hand made goods come at a price but when people produce the same products for much less and they do, i can say the price is a bit much.

    • @h2oGrunt
      @h2oGrunt 10 років тому +1

      fatdan172501 That's were we differ in opinion, whereas you think hand-made products is the same as mass produced products, I think the former is superior in quality and hence tags a higher price. If you believe that people (knife makers, and any other craftsmen) who devalue their work so that they can compete with pricing are doing the right thing, then there's nothing I can say that will make you see they're simply eroding further the economic sustainability of their work. You shouldn't put price as a main criteria when purchasing something that's built to last you a lifetime.
      And there's no need for name calling.

    • @fatdan172501
      @fatdan172501 10 років тому +2

      dont accuse me of insulting people and i wont name call, price is not the main factor im quite the gear whore but ive seen scout sheaths that are hand made of the same quality for much less, a balance of function, quality, price is what im after. this does not fit the bill

    • @h2oGrunt
      @h2oGrunt 10 років тому +2

      fatdan172501 That's quite the double standard you're sporting as far as name calling: you get to insult people... and whoever calls you on that, you get to insult them too.
      Regardless, judging from your latest reply, I don't think you quite understand the valuation concept I'm getting at. If you think your time, knowledge, experience and hard work is worth 3-5 bucks an hour, well then, it's your prerogative, and certainly go ahead and look for like-minded people when it comes to purchasing your gear.

    I've been a professional leather worker for 35 years.
    I would be asking about £80.00 Sterling for this, handstitched and hand finished.
    That's three hours work at £18.00 per hour plus £15.00 pattern jigging fee to fit the buyers knife and pouch particulars, and the remainder for materials. I buy 3.5-4mm shoulder leather for around £5.00 per square foot.
    I work from home as a sole trader so my overheads are low.
    I honestly think some people just push the envelope in terms of pricing to see what others are prepared pay.

      Hi Mannix Flinn - Thank you for your clear and honest comments. I've always been puzzled how this person can stay in business for so long. The price is clearly bloated and it's just more profiteering. $300 US equates to $422 Australian. That's a lot of money. By way of comparison, I had a very experienced leatherworker make a new sheath for my Fallkniven knife recently. It's got all the bells and whistles and is excellent craftsmanship using thick saddle leather. He made it for $100 Australian. That equates to less than a QUARTER of the price of this American sheath. Less than a quarter!!! Buyer beware!!!!

  • @WinStunSmith
    @WinStunSmith 6 років тому +11

    The sheath maker needs to read these comments. Most knife enthusiasts are NOT going to pay several hundred dollars for a knife sheath. The price is absurd. The kydex sheath the Esee 5 comes with will outlast leather any day, leather can corrode carbon steel, leather requires high maintenance to prevent deterioration, and this sheath COSTS MORE THAN THE BLOODY KNIFE! Good luck selling these. At these prices, you’ll need all the luck you can get.

      I’ll be honest, some of the handy little features are excellent on there. And a sheath like this could last a lifetime. Problem is that $300 is honestly too much. I wouldn’t mind $200 at most. But with the knife at $160 it’s a lot to ask for $300 for this sheath.

    One reason to carry a knife weak hand is self-defense during a gun retention scenario. Someone is attacking you and causes a situation that you cannot draw your firearm but you need to use maximum force...a knife available to your free (weak) hand can save your ass.

    The camera work on this video was pretty bad. In the beginning you introduced the sheath and turned around to show it, but in editing you added the big title for the sheath....which then hid what you were showing. Then about 2/3 of the way through you mention a feature on the sheath but the camera was pointed down with the sheath out of view. Then the closeup work the camera kept going in and out of focus making it hard to focus on the feature you were trying to describe.

      Idk if you'll see this but I found a Tom Brown Tracker Knife on amazon and the Included sheath for it was this sheath. Tom Brown Tracker knives are amazing. Best part is it was only $60.00. There is one made of Damascus, another made of D2 Steel and lastly one made of 1095 high carbon steel. They were a little hard to find but it's something to look into if you want.

    No disrespect,but yeah, the price is horrible. I recently purchased a western style leather gun rig for my .45 long colt and it was $360. You are telling me that small amount of leather is worth the same as a full gun rig? My leather gun rig is also high quality and handcrafted... something isn't right here.

      It’s bc some tacticool people did this was the cool guy carry, so now it’s popular which drives the price up.
      I personally like this carry, been doing it years before it became popular. Now I need a replacement but not parting with 300$+

      Modern practical tactical would be firearm strong side at 3-4 o’clock, fixed blade cross draw on off side.
      Never ever put anything directly over your spine. A light tumble could potentially cripple you.

    Just looove the leather work...
    Here’s a pointer...:
    1... your hand is in the way. When you demonstrate it’s features you constantly block the sight by placing your hand over it..
    2... you’re moving it around constantly and to fast.. turning it around and up side down..
    Basically..: to hard to focus and get a clear view as you demonstrate..
    But still.. love that leather.. but slow down..

    Everyone hating on the price... It's custom leather working. The maker isn't just charging for materials, or for time. He's charging that much to keep most of you from buying one. If he charged less he would be back-ordered for months with everyone trying to get one. I agree on his pricing, if you can't afford it, that's fine. This sheath just isn't for you.

    I owned this set up. Yes 300 bucks for sheath 140 for knife crazy. Workmanship absolutely gorgeous better in person. BUT this was so ridiculously heavy not practical at all. I’m a 250 pound man wore a gun belt and pulled my belt like I was carrying a 45 revolver. Sold it . I don’t see that set up for real life. A lot of hype.

  • @rustyshackleford17

    I think everyone's hangup is the price. Quality work costs money. Unfortunately, what a craftsman thinks his work is valued at and what customer thinks the work is valued at are often two different things. I wanted a baldric setup for my favorite chopper and belt knife, I paid out the arse for it...but I'm happy with it.
    As with this sheath, I don't think it is worth what he's asking, but I also have little desire for a sheath like his. I'd be willing to pay 100-150 for a loaded version of what he makes. I'd pay $300 if there was custom leather engraving/texturing involved.

    Owned this set up absolutely well made but that being said stupid heavy. I’m 240 pounds I workout I’m not being a wimp. I’m telling you with a pair of shorts and a gun belt this thing hung and was ridiculous to carry zero comfort. This thing hung off me and pulled my shorts down and put unneeded stress on my gun belts. My guns where never this heavy. A 5 inch blade I like to be light and forget it’s there. I sold it got my money back. Looking for a new set up. Well done video

    I wouldn't say $300 is a lot for something good quality, handmade, and i hope it has a 100% lifetime warranty, but i do think a $300 case fit to a $120 knife is ridiculous. This is a product mismatch.

    I look at it like this. I could also die in a fatal car crash or go down in a commercial airplane. Does that mean I shouldn't drive or fly? Me falling flat on my back is somewhat unlikely. I would also be wearing my pack, so that would not allow for me to fall on the sheath. This sheath is also leather and very forgiving versus something like kydex. Thanks for watching

    Scout carry is not carrying a knife in the small of your back. Is it comfortable when you drive? What about when you sit down? Are you humping a ruck? What happens when you fall and land on your back. Nope, not a good idea, it is tacticool and we all know that means tactifool...
