To answer Justine's question about red cabbage vs green with sausage.... red cabbage is sweeter and it tastes much better with the sausage then green does. I make a similar dish but I add onions and a small amount of olive oil to the pan first. Then add the red cabbage plus lots of salt then slices of kielbasa. Cook on medium low til cabbage is tender. It is very good on a cold winter night with some cornbread.
Thanks for the info. I'm from the North and we didn't make too much cabbage up there. I still do make German Stuffed Cabbage.....but I've been in the South for over 40 yrs now and I LOVE cabbage....any way you make it ! I'm going to try your recipe.
I do cabbage with garlic and olive oil, sausage, and potatoes in the pan. Once cooked, the cabbage doesn't have the same issues with digestion that raw cabbage does. And the garlic helps, too. Add some cornbread, and it's a great meal.
Overhere in Germany, we add thinly sliced apples to the red cabbage, cut in small pieces, and some currant jelly, not too much, also some mulled wine spiceslike cinnamon, cloves and aniseed, in a little paper bag. That’s so good! If you warm it up the next day, it’s much better! 😋The pudding looks delicious, so does the sausage and this huuuge potatoes! Thanks for sharing!

I'm new to watching you. Do you live this lifestyle all the time? I so enjoy watching and boy howdy that's alot of work to cook meals. I cooked for cowboy crews for al out 30 years. But I had a regular kitchen in a cook house. Anyway so interesting and fun to watch. Justine you are incredible. And so is Ron
I stumbled across your channel this morning… it brought back many memories from my childhood! In the late 60 and 70s, when not popular to do so, my parents decided to live on the grid! We had an old wood cook stove, which came from an old ship… I learned to cook on that stove. We’d get the cook stove so hot at times we’d have to open the doors to cool the house down! We heated with wood with a fireplace also. We had an out house and hulled our water, and had no power. I learned skills no one my age knew. Now when my own family has lost power I can always find something to do without power! Later my parents broke bovine into yokes (oxen)and used them to pull a Mitchell wagon. They did Numerous school assemblies teaching the history of the Oregon Trail, demonstrating how life on the trail would’ve been…They also drove the Oregon trail with their oxen and Mitchell wagon… Some may know of the Tucker family, with the Mitchell wagon. They also stayed at Dalles Oregon in 19 93 or 94 To celebrate the Oregon Trail… Some may remember…
Love your channel. There is so much fast/high processed food around us. It's nice to see content around good, healthy, resourceful cooking. I'm going to make the potato balls you made in another show. That and a little bit of mustard.....YUM!!!!!!!
Love watching these shows in the (sort of) post pandemic world. Simpler lifestyle, cooking at home, being grateful for what you have and living within your means
Seriously IMPRESSED at the metal work Ron and his dad did with the spits, etc. Have to admire what they both do and how they are teaching us! I have always enjoyed learning about the past!
Lard is rendered fatback off a hog. When being rendered the biproducts float to the top of the melted fat, are skimmed off, and known as cracklings. We always made lard. It takes a low to moderate heat and lots of time to slowly render. Rendering removes the water so that the lard will keep for a long time. Great for cooking and pie crusts!
We used to eat cabbage, potatoes, and sausage/kielbasa in what we called a New England Boiled Dinner. All in one pot together. Was so good and comfort food. Very easy! ❤
We cook and heat with wood in our household. We cheat with a hybrid electric heat exchanger water heater for now. That may change to also heating water too.
As always, very enjoyable viewing guys! I love your surrounds, amongst all things historical. And whilst i'm on that note, i wanted to share with you both, that we live within a lovely 1890's house, that was once owned by the local mine manager, so it's a very special place to call home. It's built on bluestone, is still in it's original condition, for the most part, it's a strong & sturdy structure & the architecture is simply breath taking. In ref to cabbage, i love cooking with purple cabbage & there are many ways of cooking with it. I also really love savoy cabbage. That's so delicious and is much more tender & easy to chew & digest, than ordinary green cabbage. Thanks for sharing & take care guys. Peace

So I just found your channel and am loving it. Cooking old recipes is one of my favorite things that I don’t get enough time to do anymore. I was intrigued by the Indian meal pudding and had to make it. It’s just my dad and me here so I halved the recipe - first I had to research a full measurement, and seven eggs is hard to halve so instead of being short I used 4 eggs, next time will use 3 for the half recipe - the eggs made it lofty instead of letting it settle like a custard. But is was very pleasantly surprised. Next time I was to add diced apple and drizzle maple syrup over the top. Thank you! Can’t wait to try more recipes.
I think everything looks great first time watching your Channel... I make cabbage with sausage all the time ..the only thing is is to cook the Cabbage a lot more ..because it's not supposed to be crunchy , or else it would be coleslaw, salad LOL.. yeah so all you do is you just keep adding water or vegetable broth to keep sauteing, and it's very nice to caramelize some onions also but I love your channel, and I only seen one video thus far.. another thing is if you just make a regular nice cornbread you can eat it all along with your food ..instead of regular bread..😇🧡
My family had a farm with a sugar bush and Grandpa made his own maple syrup . For dessert we would butter toast, then take a bite with a tiny spoon of maple syrup. You'd be sitting there with a custard dish of syrup just nibbling and spooning away.
Love the pewter S&P set. So did you get a deer this winter? Venison sausage is very good with blaukraut; the apple adds sweetness plus a teaspoon of vinegar. Yummy! What are you two going to plant in the spring? Got your (Farmer's Almanac) ready in-ground plants are usually planted in late March? Red cabbage also makes a great blue dye; remember to set the stain with vinegar. Ah! You will still have a molasses burnt taste. Have you thought of chinking the cracks of your walls with waxed jute rope? Also, a rain roof on the chimney prevents fire from drowning in hard rain? How about some old-fashioned (Millerd Butter)? It is a mixture of butter and molasses. Your fireplace is just large enough for suckling on a spit. Sounds yummy! Cracklin skin hum. Be smart if you get a donkey to get a female.

I think Justine ate more than Ron. Love it.
Yep. I noticed that.
Good meal! I want to try the sausage/red cabbage dish, looked so good.
I can't wait!!!!!! Love your channel!
Waiting patiently to see what you have for us today.
Ron and his Dad did a great job on the swivel meat cooker. Justine you did great on the food it looks delicious. Love watching your videos
We used to eat cabbage, potatoes, and sausage/kielbasa in what we called a New England Boiled Dinner. All in one pot together. Was so good and comfort food. Very easy! ❤
You two are such a wonderful couple. I love watching you cook and im so glad i discovered your channel.
Thank you so much!
Peace
Love to see you two eating and enjoying your food hope you both ok xxxxx
Another winner video! The history is so interesting and watching y’all live the lifestyle is awesome! I just love watching y’all! Y’all were made for each other!! The love you share for each other shows in all your videos! So nice to watch!
You are both hilarious and kind with each other. I love the recipes and the convo!!❤
very entertaining and good to see both of you enjoying the fruits of your labors as to cooking the food using the technology of the 1820's.
Would love to see you ride a horse they are such majestic beings donkeys are fun to can’t wait to see the future for both of you the way you love each other is priceless it’s so rare to see these days what a beautiful journey thanks for sharing the simple things we have all forgotten eating and sitting and talking to each other
Hello from St. Augustine ! Mmmm .Sausage ,cabbage and potato are a great combo. Never had the cornmeal pudding though.
Your videos are relaxing and entertaining. Sorry to hear about the copycat person.
Copycat?
@@CherryBlossom-vr2dc Someone copied their style and videos and even the name is similar. That is why I referenced copycat.
What is the title of the copycat videos? I didn't find anything similar.
There was a video or post where Justine mentioned that someone was copying her style and it has been a while so I forget the name of the other person.
I absolutely love your chats, clearly you enjoy your audience and you make a connection with us. Something you might look into (I'm not sure of the era) but when you go horse riding look into split riding skirts or bicycle skirts. I make my own but there are companies out there and no one will be able to tell that they weren't skirts, like hidden secret pants ... have fun and thank you for what you do
Add some apples and cloves to the red cabbage you will love it.
Justine & Ron you are such a cute couple! It's nice to see you having fun!
Love cabbage & sausage!
I'll take my pudding with maple syrup & butter please!
Great job that you & your Dad did making the roasting spit!
Thank you for sharing about your 21st century life today too! Living 2 different lifestyles the way you are is remarkable!
Always enjoy the food prep & meal time!
Sure enjoy a prayer over the food. I imagine if your like my husband & I your often praying while your working, that everything will turn out well done.
You are both a wonderful blessing, keep up the good work!
May God direct you in all you do keeping you safe!
I love watching you guys! I have always been fascinated with the 1800's. The receipts are so interesting and I would love to try some of them. By the way, y'all,my son-in-law could give Ron a run for his money! He eats just as fast, if not faster!!!
Vintage Chevy's are my favorite trucks! Go Ron! Also, I definitely want to see Justine ride. Yes please.
Loved the dinner and conversation... I already am looking forward to your next video!
“You’re killing me, Smalls!” (Sandlot) This dinner looked SO delicious!! It makes me hungry! No fair guys!! LOL
Ron, you might consider manufacturing spits (as channel merch). A nice ASMR video tutorial would be cool too!
We went to the county fair every year. I liked the horse pulls, the flea market, and
Candied apples. Good memories. 😊🎡🎠🐎
Hi and welcome to the channel!! :)
Ron doctoring that pudding up reminded me of my father in law who would put butter on bread with sugar and drown it in milk and call it desert.😂
My family had a farm with a sugar bush and Grandpa made his own maple syrup . For dessert we would butter toast, then take a bite with a tiny spoon of maple syrup.
You'd be sitting there with a custard dish of syrup just nibbling and spooning away.
I adore this meal, especially the red cabbage and sausages it ALL looks so good!!!!
So talented Ron. I checked out your website and your woodworking is fantastic. To hear you’re an iron worker also is fantastic! So many talents.
Love your videos…I’ve watched from day one. Very interesting food.looks delicious. Watching from Ontario Canada.❤️🌹🇨🇦
I love you guys! The best!
Absolutely splendid content, I believe we need to understand and learn about our culture and history. I would certainly devour this meal. Surprisingly we ended up talking about modern day trucks... fun either way. Great folks and delicious foods.🧡💚😊
New to your channel and I love it !!! Do you actually live like this 24/7. So fascinating!!!
