I recommend to see later versions of this song, see how Koji Tamaki’s performance has evolved :) Personally, I much more prefer his performance after he’s matured - more emotional and more technical!

Hi Patrick, I always enjoy your comments on Japanese pop music. Good atmosphere and interesting talk! You pick up well evaluated famous songs a lot. I recommend you to take a look at Japanese indie scene. In 1990s, several bands and projects conquered the barrier and diverse musical values were explored. That was like an explosion. Recent 2010s, we again encounter the rapid growth of indie music with many great bands. I especially recommend "Ayano Kaneko" whose is a singer song writer exhibiting a simple but powerful performance.

The flute you heard in this song is the flute sound of the folk instrument "Zampoña (sɑːmpóunjə / Spanish) = Siku (English?)" in the Andean region of South America.
Mr. Haruichi sampled the sound of the flute and incorporated it into the song. (However, it seems that there was no Zampoña performer at Fuji Rock's live performance.)
The origin of Siku is in the time of the Inca Empire, and it is said that it is an instrument with a history of more than 1000 years.
In Japan, the vertical flute called "Quena" in Peru is famous, but the range of Quena and Zampoña is almost the same, and I feel that the tones are very similar.
