  • Its here, my guide for windwalker expansion! Ithaqua has always been interesting to me, for some reason I love that story where the guy realizes the depressions in the snow are the footsteps of ithaqua.

      I appreciate your feedback! I'm cresting 1,000 which will allow the YT engine to put me in the "new youtuber" status so hopefully my views will go up after that!
      A lot of people shy away from long videos. My next game video is going to be more focused, still me, still for the most part my tempo and vocal style, just more concentrated with separate videos for each subject.
      I'll continue making the longer videos, but they'll be a higher production deal with more time spent on making sure every minute is worth your time.

    You could also try the following opening: First turn, build a Gate and defend it with your first Gnoph-Keh. The worst possible outcome is that you may have a single Acolyte from your home Area be captured. Most of the time, you will be guaranteeing that your first use of Hibernate will guarantee you to be the first player on turn three, as an enemy Great Old One or two will have been summoned by that time. The specific advantage of this strategy is that the first Gnoph-Keh hurts your tempo a lot. By relegating it to the first, relatively safe, first turn, you can focus on a highly aggressive strategy, where you use Gnoph-Keh and Arctic Wind to take other factions' Gates, instead of building your own.
    As for ideas for next videos:
    1) You could try a few of the different openings and strategies I mentioned on your Black Goat video, I think you may even get to like that Faction a bit :P
    2) You could also explore the uses of Umr-at-Tawil spellbook from the Azathoth expansion. I have some synergies in mind with Crawling Chaos, Black Goat, Sleeper, Yellow Sign, perhaps even Opener of the Way (ehm, not so much...).
    3) You could also make a video about the Faction Great Old Ones as independents, now that we have both rules and Loyalty cards about them.
    4) If you ever feel like making playthrough videos, we'll certainly gobble them up!
    5) Oh, and a High Priest video, outlining the unique possibilities the open up for each Faction (Cthulhu-in-a-box, Crawling Chaos sacrificing its High Priest after everyone else is out of Power and THEN using Thousand Forms etc.)

    • @GreyWizardInsights
      @GreyWizardInsights  6 років тому +2

      Sacrificing tempo first time is definitely one of the easiest turns because most other players won't capitalize on what you're doing at the expense of their own tempo, I like that opener, I'll try it the next time I play windwalker.
      Thank you for the ideas!
      This Sunday I'm livestreaming Mansions of Madness 2nd edition as my first "live stream board game", we'll definitely be live streaming cthulhu wars videos in the future once I get the format under control.
      High priests, its an obvious video I should do, thanks for reminding me!

    There is a strategy with windwalker i like To do. I called it vampiric wind:
    once you have rhan tegoth in play, take the star vampires and cthugha (from indie goo pack 1), try to concentrate all the star vampires in one area, then awaken cthugha, he is free so dont bother awaken him, then awaken ithaqua and rampage around the map using arctic wind. Your star vampires sucks up enemy power and doom while cthugha allow you To spare kills for power, so you can have huge power boost if you have a good roll, allowing you To continuingly roaming and bullying ppl around with your army
    Edit: I also noticed that in a few games the windwalker player can try to juggernaut his way to victory and try to achieve the 30 points limit without anyone getting their 6th spellbook. That way you can force people like opener of the way, or great cthulhu to try and face you in combat and contest you in battle which is in your advantage at this point (if your ahead), and getting your 6th spellbook that way. So rushing 30 points is good if you are ahead already in spellbooks and if your opponents are struggling.

    I love this game.
    It's true to the setting; unlike a lot of cthulhu games.
    It's balanced; unlike a lot of boardgames.

    Im confused when is a good time to start summoning gnoph-kehs. First turn i want to build a gate, summon a wendigo and hibernate to try to be first player. Or is a gnoph-keh first turn a good idea?

    @DorkSideGaming It's said that Wind Walker is a really aggressive fiction after the player gathers Ithaka and 4 Nov-kein together with the Antarctic wind spell. Then the player could rampage anywhere like a dozer. Is that so?

    • @GreyWizardInsights
      @GreyWizardInsights  5 років тому +1

      Ithaqua plus Gnoph keh is a pretty deadly combination seeing how cheap it is to move them around. They really have a bad time if someone can assassinate Ithaqua though, usuallly that means a player has to sacrifice a lot to make it happen so sometimes the other players will lose because they wait too long hoping someone else will kill windwalker

      DorkSideGaming thx for the reply. I had played wind walker in my first gameplay ( and I played really bad XD), a skillful player picked up opener of the gate and he took away my home gate which gave me a real bad start. The two old player said I should spawn the rhan-tigoth as quickly as possible, so that I can bully other fiction in the early game with the undead crab. And for the Ice-age book they suggested that it can be a marker for your next rampage target, since it's making the poor guy much difficult to react.

    If Cthulhu is in play, I would start in Arctic and would take the Ice Age spell book first to put it in his starting Area. Awakening Cthulhu for 11 Power?

    my favorite use for the ice block is against the more passive factions like Sleeper or Tcho Tcho. keeping sleeper from taking full advantage of Lethargy is incredibly useful while forcing Tcho Tcho to not just have a singular sitting location is powerful

    Dorkside, I'm planning to get the core game soon, however, what should be the very first expansion I should get.

    • @arthurdaffos1490
      @arthurdaffos1490 6 років тому +1

      Rexy and Alpha Studios windwalker definitely. Its a very straightforward faction and easy To understand. Sleeper needs a bit more knowledge of the game To be enjoyable in my opinion. Opener is very tricky To play and tcho tcho is a very weird faction with a whole new dynamic To the game...

    • @GreyWizardInsights
      @GreyWizardInsights  6 років тому

      I think the first expansion should be high priests because it adds a new dynamic to the entire game that every player can appreciate. After that, windwalker is great, Opener is great, then Sleeper, then Tcho. BUT, if you play with a smaller number of players, maybe 2-4, I'd consider azathoth before Opener because again, Azathoth adds to every faction which works well if you have players who tend to bond to their "favorite" faction

      I've actually made a faction for the Daemon Sultan himself. So i will get the High Priest expansion first, but then I'll get the Azathoth expansion to test drive my own homemade Daemon Sultan Faction. I plan to do a video of the faction when i get my hands on the expansion so I'll send a comment to you when i have uploaded the new homemade Daemon Sultan faction video.

    I played a 3-player game with Wind Walker again Great Cthulhu and Yellow Sign on Earth, probably one of the worst match-ups I've seen so far. Right away I was forced to make a horrible choice regarding my starting position:
    Put myself right in the Yellow King's warpath in the Arctic Ocean (which would give Cthulhu a free gate for his Spellbook) which meant I either had to rely on Cthulhu making a gate in Antarctica (which is pointless for Cthulhu) or trek there myself, passing through the Ocean, and that's a huge risk eith Great Cthulhu in the game.
    Or I could start in Antarctica (like I did) which leaves Yellow Sign to desecrate the Northern Hemisphere uncontested and butts me up against the most aggresive faction, and in order to expand at all I once again find myself in Cthulhu's danger zone.
    Yellow Sign was the run away victor. One major reason was Wind Walker's "first player" spellbook. Without anyone to Sabotage Yellow Sign, that seems like an impossible achievement!
    How is Wind Walker supposed to secure that first player against a power-generating machine?
    If other players have end the first round with 3 gates for 8 power, that's 14 power next round. There's nothing Hibernate can do to top that. The ability is seemingly useless and the requirement is almost impossible

    • @GreyWizardInsights
      @GreyWizardInsights  6 років тому

      1) Cthulhu is going to probably build his 3 gates in the ocean, and Windwalker no matter what will build a gate in the arctic ocean, so I don't think avoiding building ocean gates is very viable as a long term strategy.
      2) It might be worthwhile to take the free spellbook and give up the elder sign(s) first turn to take Cannibalism or howl. Keep in mind that once you get Howl + Cannibalism means that your wendigo are going to be popping up for free in other people's areas when they fight, and with howl, they have to attack with a minimum of 2 units or you'll be able to wander around and capture their cultists with no need to allow the battle to take place.
      3) ice age, while an ability I often give up for neutral spellbooks, in a "smaller base rules" game, I think it does a good job of messing with Yellow Sign, who suddenly has to pay 2 power, one to move into an area being desecrated, and then another to actually desecrate it.
      Most rounds you should be getting 2-3 bonus power in that matchup, assuming that you stop and hibernate at 2 or 3 power left. If you hibernated with 2 great old ones out at 2 power, then for the rest of the game you can hibernate at 2 for no less power than anyone else that turn, but then when you need it, you can use that extra 2.
      Do you use the high priest expansion?

      DorkSideGaming we haven't yet, but I'd imagine it's around the corner for us. The group collector has the expansion already, among many others. It was just recently we started using expansions at all

    I think Windwalker is the most OP faction right now, easy to get spellbooks, easy to collect Doom points, even in 1 vs 1 where you gain points for killing units, because Windwalker is an excellent combatant too, come one what is his downside?

    • @GreyWizardInsights
      @GreyWizardInsights  6 років тому +3

      We don't notice windwalker winning more than others, sometimes windwalker struggles to even make his way to the other pole because no one will let him travel, but for the most part you're right, very solid faction that feels satisfying to play even if you don't win.

    • @MattCrawley_Music
      @MattCrawley_Music 4 роки тому

      It takes ages for the faction to get its OP effects, and if you're not careful, other players will keep you down and stop you reaching your potential. Its surprisingly hard to play as windwalker

      In 1 vs 1 Windwaker NEVER wins - the best he can reach is a draw! The other player just stopps at 5 SB and only takes the 6th if he is sure to win (by ES e.g.). Otherwise the game ends draw.
