I agree with Dutch on drinkability for Midwinter Night's dram. I find it very pleasant and enjoyable to sip, nice for a movie night or something like that.

just go this at msrp and its fantastic. The port influence is massive. All sweet stewed fruits and dark sugars wrapped in black and green pepper spice, a little herbal. It almost feels like there was slosh in the barrel when they put the whiskey in. I would argue that the rye is actually quite strong, its not center stage but there is a strong spice that lives on the edges of the port influence throughout the palate and finish. Also you cant get this easily even on the west coast.
While I seem to get the herbaceous rye components on the nose and palate more than y'all, I think you're right that the rye is definitely not the focus of MWND. It's there for warmth and spice, but the bulk of the top notes and body come from the oak and the port. But I love it, it's closer to an 80/100 for me
I guess it's unsurprising you like the Angels Envy Rum Finished Rye considering all of you LOVE rum. I'm not a rum fan, but a port guy and I think this is a really good pour. That being said, I've also got a HW Rendesvous Rye Store Pick finished in PX Sherry casks that is as good if not a shade better than MWND, and was cheaper. Some of Dutch's love for this is a bit weird, but I would agree that uniqueness is closer to a 9 considering there aren't many port finished Ryes out there. That being said I'd still probably only give it a 75-78 because it does lack in some areas.
This is one review I got to disagree with you all! To compare it to angel envy is crazy. For $100 this is a very enjoyable bottle. I was drinking MWND ACT 9 Scene 2 , Van winkle 12, Stagg Jr , EHT single barrel tonight and I kept going back to the MWND.
Midwinter's is better than Angels Envy Rye. Keep in mind though that the latter is rum finished and waaaaay too sweet, straight maple syrup to me. Angel's Envy port is about the same as this but cheaper... but I'm comparing last years' Midwinter's. I agree not much distinction and should be more rye forward. They have great rye!
Ever since High West has been using their own distillate in MWND, it's been on a steady decline. The first few acts of this were outstanding! I quit searching for it after act 6.
I agree that the quality has declined. 6 was very good. I’m working on 8 now with 9 in reserve. It should last quite a while based on the way it’s going.
I was able to get a 2020 angels evnvy cask strength, after I had a quarter of it I put some of the mw act 8 to top it back up to a full bottle after some experiments. It’s amazing. Down to a half bottle now.
I wonder if my experience will change after my Act 9 has been open as long as Act 8, but I find Act 9 much less enjoyable than Act 8 on first impressions.
It's funny to me that they said that Angel's Envy Rye was cheaper that MWND. In the only liquor store where that I've seen the Angel's Envy Rye, it was $135. The MWND was $100 (I saw the shelf tag, not the actual bottle). It blows me away that they said the Angel's Envy Rye was $85. I would actually buy it at that price.

Finding MWND is the problem. Default is Angel's Envy Rye which is at most well stocked stores. Costco has almost always had it around year's end/New Year for ~$70. Cheapest I've seen MWND around L.A. is ~$130 if it's even available. Last time was Fall 2020.
Of course Dutch would give a boring beige label with the same bottle as any other High West product a 5....Dutch is overrating everything lately. Go home Dutch. You're drunk.
This is the biggest rip off. This was sitting on the shelf for the longest time and then all the whiskytube sellouts got their free bottle and they're "raving" over how amazing this is. Give me a break. Pretty tired of the echo chamber. I hope you guys continue to take the red pill.
These guys are killing bottle reviews. I would never purchase a bottle based off their taste. They are 0-2 in my book. This is the best MWND release so far. I think they are drinking fake bottles.

Never seen this, ever. Best finished rye I've had is Seagrass, bar none. Love that apricot.

I just buy a decent $40-$50 rye and add 1 ounce of a quality port. Just as good as this or better.
