England - Highgate Cemetery in London

- In the early 1800's London was rapidly expanding and needed to secure more burial grounds. In response to this seven new cemeteries were prepared. "The Magnificent Seven". One of them was Highgate Cemetery.
The first person was buried in 1839. Since then more than 170,000 people found their last resting place in about 53,000 graves. The cemetery is now rarely used. In the past it featured in spooky movies, as well as being the base of the "Highgate Vampire".
Highgate is divided into two parts, East and West. Only the Eastern part is generally open to visitors. The western part is acknowledged as the most intriguing one and is only accessible on a guided tour. This video is from Highgate West.

Incredible place and architecture. So many lives lived and ended. So much grief and sorrow.
The cemetery has a lot of history,, and to me some of the most beautiful stones and architect statutes. I wish I could tour thur there beautiful grounds.
This is one place that I’ve been meaning to visit for a long time now
7:17 The dog resting at the foot of his masters grave in stone for eternity. Lovely.
The dog looks so sad. I hope they are together now and happy.
Fantastico tutto quel verde...bello il cane sulla tomba del padrone e belli anche i tumuli cosi imponenti e senza addobbi ridicoli....
thank you, it's very beautiful!
Thanks for sharing your view! There are actually two tracks in this video. The first echoes in my opinion the mystical appearance of the cemetery, the second reflects the serenity and quiet beauty of it.
Radclyffe Hall, author of the 'Well of Loneliness', is interred in one of the vaults in the circle below the Cedar of Lebanon. It has become a lesbian shrine, and flowers are often left at the door. The lion is on the tomb of George Wombwell, famous for his 'Travelling Menagerie'. The sculpted dog is on the tomb of Tom Sayer, a famous Victorian prize fighter. His mile long funeral procession was accompanied by his pet dog.
quiet good together...thank you for sharing.
Brompton Cemetery is another beautiful graveyard. The tomb of Valentine Prinsep is especially intriguing
Thank you for your comment. I will have to look it up next time I'm in London.
It should all be opened to the public and you should have a choice to go on the tour or not but see all of the cemetery
Still a beautiful cemetery....
I have changed the music. I hope the audience likes this better...
***** what is the track and artist name please. thanks for the video. i will visit there.

Sandalsand M ..what the real vampire in highgate cementry???
thank you its great
Nice video.........................
I hope some kind of preservation work is going to happen as if not then what was the point of having these cemeteries??
I like the Tomb of Thomas Sayers. His loyal Dog forever watching over his master
I agree!
Oh yes, it depends on your field of interest. There may however not be many hugely famous people. Check out the list I included in the video description field.
Thanks for sharing, would love to go there and take pictures and do some tombstone rubbings.
Loved this, thank you! : )
Beautiful place.
Beautiful.
Question: WHY is the west end of the cemetery only viewable by guided tour??? From what I can gather its an older part of the cemetery, but there are many "older parts' in many, many cemeteries throughout the world that don't require a guided tour. Guided tours are nice - especially if the tour guide is knowledgeable - but rarely are those tours the ONLY way you can see a section of any cemetery. Just askin'.
I have visited the west side and its cool. There isn't enough money in England to do all we do here in the US. A guided tour in the west side would be impossible because the gate guard is sitting there gathering the few pounds from the rare visitor. Lack of money is big in England. I lived there 3 yrs and enjoyed it but lack of money spreads out into the medical world and that's one of the reasons I left........when I want a Dr at 3 AM for an emergency...........I DON'T WANT A 25 YR OLD JR DR....THE GOOD ONES SLEEP AT NIGHT!..........I didn't want to be one of their famous "Statistics" who "die from neglect" and YES THEY DO!...............
@@chocolatcats Please come to the USA & tell that to those who want socialized medicine.
keri caye Same in Ireland. I grew up there but came to the USA in 1979
How the hell can they stop you from visiting a cemetery?
I don't think "h..." has anything to do with this.
One reason is safety. When the cemetery was closed for awhile, it became so overgrown. I have been three times many years apart. While it would be great to go of on your own to explore, so much undergrowth is about in some places, you could easily break ankle or worse just taking a step off the path. That's not to mention the damage somebody could do if they were intent upon it. All the damage has not been from weather and age. Looters and vandals have done awful stuff to some graves
The Friends of Highgate are doing a marvelous job, but I am sure as soon as they clear one area, another needs attention.
Karen Wish I lived close to volunteer to help it’s upkeep.
Excuse me but I have a question.... I am studying vampirism and vampire lore and This is the most closest place that has a base legend of a vampire, So could you please tell me why the other side of the highgate cemetery was blocked? If you cannot, that is fine.
+かわいいきよ Highgate is divided between an open cemetery and the closed one presented in this video. I do not recall why they did it this way.
the west side is populated with much bigger and interesting tombs and also they are dangerous because they can fall and injure someone,Highgate friends (who run the cemetary ) is charging more money to go to the West side than to go to the East.
Thanks for that video very interesting
Thanks

a lot of ghost
The vídeo is great but what a horrible music !
I agree. The music is a totally wrong and spoils a nice video presentation.
boacon goes with just about anything, just sayin.
The least Graveyardy music ever. This is sleazy cheezy winebar music followed by a timotay shampoo advert. I've been to Highgate whenever possible (Marx's grave is free - it's all downhill from there, so why pay?.) The best music for a cemetery or graveyard is silence.
