That last scene where everyone was running onto the ground is because a player, buddy franklin, kicked his 1000th career goal, the 4th player ever to do so, so everyone stormed the ground to celebrate. Game had to be paused for like 40 minutes!

Buddy was the 6th man to kick 1000 goals . Lockett, Wade , Coventry , Dunstall and Abblet all kicked 1000 + goals .

There is a league in the USA. You have no idea how exciting a game can get. A group of work colleagues decided to have dinner before a game at the MCG and their partners were invited as well. One colleague and her husband who have Vietnamese heritage went along to their first game, chose a team to cheer for and proceeded to have the most incredible night. At one stage when the lead was going back and forth between the two teams, her husband was actually vibrating on his feet and gripping his hair as he screamed. I will never forget the look of excitement he had during that game.

The AFL "Super Bowl" is called the "Grand Final" held in late September. The season is March through September, which is winter for those in the southern hemisphere.

Part of the reason for the passion is that teams have real strong connections to the parts of the town / city where they're from, most major cities have more than one team -and they're not franchises that can be bought and moved easily and often they've been around for at least 100 years. My soccer team has been around for 162 years. Whereas in the US there's not even one team per state for any professional sports, which is probably why college is more popular for many - there you get a similar level of connection to local community as you would in say soccer. In the AFL the fans also own the teams too essentially, every team is like Green Bay but more so.

You need to check out "What is AFL: Aussie Rules Explained" and it's companion video "A Beginners Guide to Australian Rules Football"; hopefully these will help you to understand the basic rules of the game.

0:51. We were born for this game! The passion is very real.
Players will stay at clubs even if other clubs offer them a massive pay rise. But of course you'll get your few that will follow the money

There are other countries that play, but not professionally. There’s an international championship that happens too, my old boss coached the Canadian women’s team a few years back ☺️

I started watching this incredible game in the early 2000's when I had my big sat dish. Now here in the US you have to buy a mongo programming package just to see a few games. I can't even do that because I'm in a desert rural area, and all the broadcast electronics suck. I can barely make this function. I'm stuck watching short highlights.

Lately there's been a lot of older, but full matches streamed on UA-cam, though it might just be here in Australia.

AFL is starting to get more traction worldwide. There's league's all over the world. Check out USAFL to see whether youve got a team near you. There's a world cup in Australia every year, Aussie player's dont participate cause that wouldn't be fair.

How good is footy! Unfortunately (for good reason) a lot of the big hits and big tackles are now penalised more.

There used to be an international cup in which all countries could field a team.
Australia was the only country to be excluded, which is why wasn't called a world cup.
    Past tense now.
