You have taught me so much over the years. I’ve been watching since ’09 or so. Learned early that for me, slow becomes good and good becomes faster. I tie for enjoyment, so speed is self satisfaction. I watch other tyers, mostly for their patterns. I live in the Southeastern US and sadly trout can’t survive in my climate. I mostly fish for panfish and Bass. It has surprised me how many of your patterns have fooled my local fish. Anyway, you explain everything so well, but the one thing I still don’t know is how to select the “right” feather from the cape for the fly I’m trying to create. You do it effortlessly. As much as you work to teach us the details of how to tie each fly, I have hit a point where I realize selection of the material is holding me back. (Not talking about a Classic Salmon fly) I mean as simple as looking at a cape and knowing how/where to go to get a feather that is right for the Wooly Bugger I am wanting to tie. I realize that you do so many simple things like this without a thought because they are second (maybe third) nature to you. Just saying, there is an entire venue available where you could share some of knowledge that you don’t think is relevant. As an idea, find a local person with interest, and teach them (on camera) how to tie flies. I would love to see and learn how you started a new person. I have no knowledge of UA-cam… should it be a new parallel channel? Hoping that other viewers with more knowledge will weigh in. All I know is that i keep learning but I always feel that there are some basics that I’ve missed. Selfishly, I have a great-nephew who I’m teaching fly fishing. I would really like to learn, have videos to refer him to, to help bring him into the fly tying community. BTW… no response is requested. I’m just tossing this for you to consider.
Over across the pond, in Newfoundland, the most popular fly is the Blue Charm hair wing, tied with Brown or Black Moose hair! And also the White wing version tied with calf tail or white buck tail! Almost identical to Hairy Mary you tied here!!
I did enjoy it, Davie... thank you. I don't know why but I love watching and listening to the salmon flies going together. Especially the older styles. Thanks again, Davie. You made my night... =] Mike
Very nice tie, great tips, Many Thanks for your videos, the are excellent. Just wish we had this resource back in 1980, my tying would be brilliant by now.😀
Hi @RemedyElixir, If you changed the rib to silver and use grey squirrel then it would be a blue charm but with the brown wing and gold rib it's called a hairy Mary, both patterns are very popular in Scotland..The original Blue Charm and the Hairy Mary as you may know would have had feather wings so over time both patterns were replaced with a hair.. All the very best Davie
Hi Mark, If you used grey squirrel and changed the rib to silver is would be a blue charm though dyeing the grey squirrel cinnamon then it would be an ideal hair for the hairy Mary... All the very best Davie..

A killer on the lower River Shannon, back when we had Salmon in the river.
The phrase "back when he had salmon" has an increasing resonance here in New Brunswick, Canada....
Nice Davie you could also use badger or grey squirrel for the wing
This is a very popular fly in Newfoundland, but we call it the Blue Charm. Haven't heard of this name.

Тело нужно сделать веретенообразным.
Were these ever tied with squirrel tail?
Hi Mark,
If you used grey squirrel and changed the rib to silver is would be a blue charm though dyeing the grey squirrel cinnamon then it would be an ideal hair for the hairy Mary...
All the very best Davie..
