I bought this 1978 Sears Gamefisher 14ft. fiberglass boat, trailer, and 1968 Merc 110 for $400 last fall. Had to do a few things to the trailer and paint the topside of the boat. Replaced the fuel fittings, lines, lower unit oil, and blew air through the water pee hole on the motor and took it out for the first time this Saturday. No water coming out of pee hole. I have the water pump kit coming from eBay, and I think your video was a huge help. I can't wait to get on the water with a working engine. Running non-ethanol gas I hope this thing will last another 50+ years!
Thanks for the post. I knew nothing about impellers prior to your video. I only new the jets stopped shooting out water on my motor. The repair went perfect!
NUMBER ONE THING. Note what gear the motor is in, It needs to be but back together in the same place, or it will not go back together. Mines in the shop now. That deserved more than just a blip at the end. Also, I suggest a tie rap to bend the impeller, then the string.
I Cooked this same motor today within 10 minutes after not having it ran for years. Water was coming out the outtake in the begining then stopped. I melted that tube at 5:25 and found broken peices of the impeller inside the grill. Hope the motor is still fixable, it was smoking and got crazy hot. Ugh
Lol yes he did. Not a big deal they will self right once you start it. I have installed them backwards several times on purpose. Then run motor for a few seconds and disassemble again and the veins are facing correctly.
I have a 1968 4 horsepower 2-stroke Mercury and I can't seem to find a carburetor rebuild kit for it anywhere do you know where I can go to find the set please let me know and thank you
Thank you for your video but I wish you would’ve showed me putting the impeller in over this little tiny piece you were doing there cause that’s what I need to do. I’m having problems.
You really can't show that very well. It is the luck of the draw. I have done tons of these some go easy and just fall into place some are a ball buster. First trick is get some waterproof plumbers grease put a dab on the flat of the shaft and set your key in place center it as best you can. next step is to just start to wind impeller into place. another trick is take some white out or paint stick mark the vein that lines up with the key slot just as point of reference as to where the slot is. I lay the unit on its side and put the flat of the shaft at 12 o'clock this does two things it helps keep the key in place and you will know where it is when you put the impeller in. You now know that the marked vein will also need to be at 12 to line up with keyway. Just be patient and fiddle with it. There are some tricks with the veins to fold them over but I found i have better luck just winding it in and using my fingers to fold them over.
Thanks for the great how to video. I have 2 older mercury engines, a 1970 which looks like it is near new and a 1978 model. Both need impellers replaced. I do have a question. The 1970 engine does not appear to have a top bolt to remove. How do you remove the lower unit? I have not found any video for an engine this old. Thank you.
i have a 9.8 Nissan, how do you remove one of the two pins on the shifting rod, without potentially bending the rod, if you use a hammer to knock out one of the pins
I have the same outboard, but I need to replace the seal housed in the propellor. The old seal is leaky, and all the oil from my gearbox oil reservoir is leaking out. The problem is that I don't know where to find this seal, and I don't know the outboard's exact name/info. Is there anyone around here who can help me find this? So that I can order the seal? thanks
I have a question, if I look up the upper part there is a rod that comes down. it seems that the plastic tube from the impeller needs to go over that rod/tube. or does it have to stay unconnected when puting the lower unit back together ? thank for your help!
Sometimes if it has sat for a while I remove the plug and put in a small amount of of gas and then replace the plug. This way you can see if it wants to fire. Sometimes this is all it needs. But if it starts and stops you know the plug and wiring is working. Check the fuel line to make sure nothing clogged it along the way. Let me know if those help to start...
I have this 4.5 and my guy replaced the impeller as you did but the motor will not go into reverse. It is in neutral and will shift forward but not in reverse. I have not ran the motor since this work was completed. What do you recommend?
They should have checked this before ever charging you and giving it back. If the lower unit and shifter were not in the same position when they put the lower unit back in the shifter may not be able to move far enough to get it in reverse. I'd call them and tell them, they should fix it for you and the sooner you call them the better...
Thank you! I called them this am and they said the motor would go into reverse once started and they had moved it to neutral for the change out of the impeller. Thank you again!
I got a 1973 4hp and its not pumping water! Please help. I put the new impeller in and the motor starts in 1 pull but it wont pump out the water i immediately shut it off so it didnt crack the head. I dont know anything about boat motors
Well at least you guys have motors that have a reverse mine only has neutral and forward, be careful who you buy from on eBay, I made the mistake of using my debit card and gave to much information and my card was hacked for $300
I have a mercury outboard 2 stoke motor. The guy I bought it from said it was a 20 hp but the serial numbers on the bracket and inside said it is a 45hp. I am having trouble getting the foot off. I removed the nuts and a screw. the back is freed but the forward part will not let it drop. I use liquid wrench and soaked it but it still will not drop. Do you have any ideas that I can try.
Ebay, amazon, your local marine dealer all sell the parts. I needed the part right away for a trip and looked the part up on ebay and then called the marine shop. It made it much quicker knowing the part number. It was like 2x more and I had to drive about an hour round trip, but you need to what you need to do when you leave in 2 days. It was fairly cheap. I think the gas to get there and the time to drive and get it were my biggest expenses. I have not done one, but should be similar. Let me know if it was the same when you're done! Best of luck! and don't stress it!
I have 1971 7.5! Your KEY there 2:10 is ATTACHED to shaft? Mine is loose(separated) and VERY difficult to get impeller on! The part(28-8M0032835 - Key) sells as a SEPARATE item too! Is that(LOOSE) ok?
Thanks for the video! I just purchased a 1974 4HP Merc. I followed your instructions; a cable tie was great to bend the impeller fins so they fit in the housing. The key in a royal pain and holding it in place with the tiniest amount of grease was enough to get the impeller to slide over. My kit came with a new O ring for the impeller housing and that was the hardest part of all to install - needed three hands for that one. Just one issue. I removed the leg in neutral, and reinstalled it in neutral. I now no longer have reverse gear. Is the top of the shaft keyed in a particular order? The good news was the engine started second pull after being idle for all these years and runs well!
Just did the impeller in my 7.5 hp merc yesterday and now have the same problem with it not going into forward or reverse. Was this a simple fix? Thought I was being careful
The problem I have seen is you can disassemble it either in forward or neutral but you must reassemple it in whatever position you took it apart it. But the problem is if while apart you turn or move the shift shaft on the lower unit. I always mark the shaft and housing so I can tell if it moved while apart. What you will need to do is with vise grips or pliers is after you take it back apart is turn the shaft through the gears all the way to the forward gear position now put the shift lever in forward and reassemble.
+Joe Delago I just jiggled it until it easily plopped in. I have had them where they didn't plop in because I changed the gear by accident and was not sure which gear I had it in (F,N,R) and had to jiggle it separate it and try again while flipping through the gears about 10 times each till it finally just fell into place. When I had it in the right gear when it went it went it pretty easy. If you force it you'll most likely have issues and if you force it and it's not right you may ruin something or have a hard time getting it back apart. when it is lined up right it should plopped in without a ton of force. Best of luck... It will fall in eventually. I have gotten pretty upset and wanted to just smash a motor and throw it across the cement floor, but that is when I decide I need to take a break :)
Having this exact same issue and I do want to trow it across the room😂😭 Does it make a difference if I moved the blade when it was seperated so the gears dont match anymore?
Yikes, try ebay, amazon, do an internet search, try the marine shops, and always check craigslist(sometimes people do repairs on outboards and have a bunch of parts laying around), also check small engine shops as they may have the parts laying around as well.
I'm confused... I was OK with your version of "clockwise" until I saw the next video come up of a shop (boatinglocal) replacing the impeller on a bigger Merc - His was installed the same direction shown in your vid and he also emphasized that it needed to be installed "correctly" - he called it "clockwise"... Hmmm... Now I can't remember which direction I installed mine -
The impeller in this video is not installed correctly. The engine rotates drive shaft clockwise and the impeller vanes need to FOLLOW that rotation to work properly. They are installed with the vanes leading in this video. The impeller will not pump water efficiently enough to properly cool the powerhead this way. The impeller will also get damaged after a short time of running when installed backwards like this.

If you are talking about the shift selector with the vice-grips on it I did replace it this year. I was worried I was going to lose the grips in the middle of the lake. The Mercury marine dealer by me had a replacement. It has a square shaft. The I just bought the plastic shifter and cut it to fit as the plastic was too large to drop into gear. I used a lighter to melt the cut edges smooth and put a nut on it. If you are talking about getting shaft in place because it was not in the right gear I just took many attempts and a lot of fidgeting to get it to go. Hope one of these answers helps
