    I was born and raised in the Bronx NY in the 70s and 80s Phil Rizzuto was better than the games. I’m Italian American Phil LOVED the Yankees and Italians and was enthusiastic about showing it. He was a humble great man Who touched every Yankee fan in a special way He’s the last great “homer” announcer who was a “real regular guy “

      Absolute WORST Comment of all time....Phil is a Moron...your his cousin.
      Whitey's first line of his is classic...
      "It's been a big week for the Ford's."
      ...Gerald had just gone into the White House.
      Phil is rambling...we had the best team....was he on the '61 Yankees
      Whitey was my father's only....Cousin

    I met Phil at a Yankees 'old timers game' when he was walking up to the broadcast booth after the old timers played their two inning game; a game which Joe DiMaggio hit a homerun just inside the left field foul pole over the 301 ft sign. This was 1964. I spent a whole day making a banner which my friend, Mike Tolda and I attached to an old push broom handle. We had it rolled up at the time we coincidentally crossed paths with the man. Phil asked what the banner said, so we unrolled it. When he saw it unraveled Scooter's only response was, "Oh my God!" The banner read, "Phil Rizutto for Hall of Fame"! Now, what would make a 14 year old kid, and his 13 year old best friend walk around Yankee Stadium with that? Such was the impression the man made on us! I've been a great many places in this world, and I have been blessed with having met some truly extraordinary people in my travels. But, few memories make me smile reflectively more than that one moment from my youth!

I'll never forget a Yankee favorite of mine named Sanchez getting a clutch hit & Rizzuto busting out with "c'mon Celerino" as he ran the bases. They'll never be another Scooter". Rest in Peace old friend, congrats & thanks for everything !

      Harry Caray was actually better, wuth the Cubs, bcuz he kept Wrigley rocking with his singing & antics. I'm a Yank fan since '65, so Rizzutto is my boy, but, he mostly talked sbout everything BUT the game.

    • @KSmall109CAB
      @KSmall109CAB 4 роки тому +1

      Even is the Yankees were losing badly in a game you kept listening if he was the announcer. The Yankee teams in the mid to late 1960s lost a lot of games but Rizzuto kept the games entertaining.

    • @KSmall109CAB
      @KSmall109CAB 4 роки тому

      @@dme1016 If you remember those Yankee teams between 1965 and 1969 there really was much game-related stuff to talk about! The 1965, 1966, and 1967 teams were pretty bad. The 1968 and 1969 teams were mediocre. Rizzuto's antics kept things interesting.

    • @dme1016
      @dme1016 4 роки тому

      @@KSmall109CAB Yeah, but stories about Mantle, canolis, & his wife, got old. Plus, Phil was usually on the Turnpike by the 8th inning. I don't recall exactly, but I couldn't imagine him staying around for double-headers. But, I liked him SO MUCH better than that Trump ass-kisser Vin Scully, who didn't want anyone else in the booth for Dodger games.

    So many of these Hall of Famers are gone now...But Scooter showed the world what broadcasting baseball is all about. The action is only part of it. The stories, the side conversations, the banter between two or more old friends, that's what makes the games entertaining. Also, with Phil it was all real. That's him up there, not an act.

    Wonderful his speech touched on my own challenges with ADHD. Especially starting from back to the beginning. Plus a few spooner's and malapropism. Abbott and Costello, only trust guy with a vowel at the end of his name. Love the way he talked about his wife saying your trapdoor is always open. Never thinks before he speaks. The poverty in baseball back then leaving your neighborhood was like going to the moon and finally how he calls people Huckleberry including his granddaughter. Gratitude Family Friends Relatives and everyone who ever loved the New York Yankees. My father was in New Guinea during WW2 and the notion he be met by a bunch of Italian's was 😂 hilarious.

    11:01 (Talking about the Dodgers) "It's unfortunate we'd beat them every year, we let them win one or they were going to leave town and they left town anyway" My man Phil could've been a standup.

    This is incredible. What a wonderful life. He met the love of his life because he substituted when Joe D didn't want to go. Even the ballplayers are enjoying this.

    I listened to The Scooter, Bill White and Frank Messer as the Yankees announcers all throughout my childhood. But, The Scooter Rizzuto rarely talked about the game when he was announcing. Now I know why. He wasn't there to announce. He was only there to mention restaurants to get free meals. Go figure.

    Two blocks behind the spectators, is a creek running out of Lake Otsego which is the source of the Susquehanna River, the longest river in the east.

    I met Phil at an exclusive vip party at the Hall and I only got that chance because my Dad got access via membership with the Hall. I met Rusty Staub, Phil, Bobby Feller and Phil's wife, Cora. My Dad talked to Cora like they were schoolmates because he felt like he knew her through Phil talking about her. I walked up to Phil and he and I talked about those huckleberries at the Hall didn't number cannolis among the hors d'ouvres at the party, then my family got a photo with Scooter. I miss him. Oh! I met Warren Spahn too! They're all gone and I'm still here.
