"The Solitary Rambler" is my series of amateur films of my journeys in the countryside accompanied by my own musical scores, which I compose and perform on my Yamaha keyboard.
Please note that, as with all the films I make, this is not actually intended to be an extensive guide to the area. This is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I often share some of my own personal stories.
If you are new to my channel, I strongly recommend reading the description under the “about” tab, which will provide a clearer understanding of what to expect in my films: / solitaryrambler

Thanks Patrick, really enjoyed the walk. Loved the accompanying music 🎶👍🏻
Many thanks Claire, I experiment with different music when I can, glad you liked it 👍
Great walk as always Patrick, interesting to hear about the extra things you have to bear in mind when filming. Thanks for sharing, take care.
Thanks Nuinmar, glad the titbits of the filming process was of interest 👍
Nice one Patrick. I really like the dedication to the miners. Very touching. Nice to get a bit of insight into your vloging style. I'd never thought of the issues before. If you were out more in that week we will be backed up with footage soon to Easter 2024. It was really nice to see a new year vlog. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Chris, yes there are many of these miners dedications around North East Derbyshire and Bolsover. Just thought I'd talk a bit about the film making as some have found that of interest from earlier films. Thanks as always for watching and commenting 👍
You had some lovely winter sunshine Patrick, glad you felt motivated to give us another lovely walk, thankyou 😊
Thanks so much Steph, pleased you enjoyed it 👍
Lovely winter day walk, Patrick! Appreciate you sharing as always.
Many thanks Richard, all the best 👍
Hello Patrick.
Greetings from Ireland.
So lovely to see you again. I really love your beautiful walks and of course that beautiful accent of yours which I could listen to all day long. Thank you .☘️
Many thanks for the kind words Rosemary! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I loved the way your neighbour was outside having a smoke at 90. Probably clearing his lungs. Your piece on camera angles went completely over my head lol. It was like a tongue twister. You did well getting the filming in, as we didn't get much daylight in January. It's so kind of you to take time out of your holidays to film for us, it's truly appreciated and nice to hear you went to visit your mum down south too. I enjoyed the walk and it was a nice clear day too, which is perfect for filming. Cheers Patrick
Glad you liked the story of my neighbour sitting outside having a fag Kelly 😃 I didn't really explain the camera angle too well really, but hopefully some other film makers who see this might get the gist of what I was meaning. I enjoy getting out filming when I'm on leave, I do it for myself, but I just share the films online with you and other viewers 😃 Thanks as always Kelly for commenting and for taking the time to watch 👍
Thanks for your warm wishes regarding 2023 Patrick 🤠🙏🏼 and I’d like to return with a big thanks for your wonderful films including this amazing (as always ) walk and talk 🙏🏼
You are The bench mark for quality rambling films 👍🤠
Very best wishes Simon 🤠👍🙏🏼
You are most welcome Simon and thank you too for your wonderful support! 😃 Always appreciated and as always thanks for commenting and for taking the time to watch 👍
@@solitaryrambler most welcome Patrick ATB 🙏🏼
Good morning Patrick. Another very intersting enjoyable video. Some amazing view's. You do live in a lovely part of the world. Hope you have a great weekend. 😊👍
Hi Cath, thanks as always for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed the video. Have a great weekend too 👍
@@solitaryrambler Thanks Patrick 😊👍
Always great content Patrick, your lovely music & excellent filming on a winter's day. Interesting mining history & camera angles. Nice coat, you looked cosy. Thanks as always for taking us all along with you.
Many thanks for the kind words Lesley, glad you enjoyed it. The coat was a Christmas present to myself. Thanks for watching 👍
Thank you Patrick for another lovely walk, you did well with the weather, we liked the bit where you said about your 90 year old neighbour outside having a smoke, and that they have been married 68 years. We have been married 61 years on the 31st March. Thank you again for your great filming. Take care all the best Dave & Jean.
Glad you enjoyed it Dave and Jean, The weather was great for January. Pleased you enjoyed the tale of my next door neighbour. Great that you've both had 61 great years together too. Thanks as always for your great comments and for taking the time to watch 👍
Another cracking film Patrick and love your coat and hat your well wrapped up 👍📽️
Glad you enjoyed it John, thanks for watching. Yes that coat was a Christmas present to myself 👍
Superb as always Patrick. That area of Derbyshire I am unfamiliar with so great that you featured it. Look forward to following you on many more walks in 2023 and a belated Happy New Year to yo too. Stay safe and keep them coming!!
Thank you Eric, I've already done quite a few in 2023. All the best and a belated Happy New Year to you too👍
A most enjoyable winter-time walk Patrick. Those colliery winding wheels are a great tribute to the miners that worked hard to keep people warm in their houses, and the wheels of industry turning. The churches you show on this video are of beautiful architecture, and the area is of quite nice scenery, considering that it was very industrial in the past. Clay Cross tunnel is of an unusual construction, as it is very high from rail level to roof, but very restricted in width. The roof in part of the tunnel has a slight sag, and I was told that it was due to early subsidence in the area, but has never shifted since. Anyhow, many thanks for this production, and the lessons to be learnt with the problems with filming in the sunshine,
Many thanks Ffranc, yes there are lots of miners wheels in the north east of Derbyshire. I love churches, I think they're usually the most interesting buildings in any town or village. Couldn't get close to Clay Cross Tunnel sadly but managed to see it from a distance. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for commenting and watching 👍
Thank you for this, its nice to see where I live and the paths I used ride my horse along. Happy new year to you too..
Nice one, many thanks for taking the time to watch 👍
Lovely walk Patrick from a area I don't no but will have to visit soon
Thanks Mick, a walk in a different part of Derbyshire for a change 👍
Hi Patrick. Nice route you put together there👍 A bit muddy towards the end 😁 I love those pit memorials with the wheels, and it's nice to see some of those villages starting to thrive again!👍All the best and take care 👍😊
Hi Des, yes it was rather like a mudbath at one point 😁 There are lots of pit memorials with those wheels around North East Derbyshire and Bolsover, many of the villagers being ex-miners from the old pits. Thanks for watching and commenting, have a great week👍😊
nice walk Patrick enjoyed the walk i think iv done some of it years ago but great to see it again.
Glad you enjoyed it Andrew, many thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Hi Patrick, I really enjoyed your walk and your well-made video. I like to follow you on the map while I'm watching. Your explanation about camera angles was interesting and probably goes some way to explain why your videos look so professional. Thanks for putting in the effort and keep up the good work!
Thank you very much Peter! Some people have found my film making titbits interesting from earlier videos, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to talk more in this one. Thanks for your great comments and for taking the time to watch 👍
Great walk with a beautiful clear blue sky. I loved the technical explanation too. A belated Happy New Year to you & your friendly neighbours. Looking forward to the next stroll ! 😄😁🥰
It was a great day for January Angus. Glad you liked the techical stuff. Thanks as always for watching and commenting 👍
Consistently good videos always a good watch.
Glad you think so Peter, many thanks! 👍
That you have the skills to do all the technical wizardry for these videos (shots/music/editing) as well as planning interesting routes and disseminating fascinating tidbits of information makes me very envious. Thank you for the inspiration to go out and visit some of the places you recommend and the insight in how to best film them. I might give it a go one of these days. I wonder if you know of any good routes near the reservoirs along Woodhead pass or if you have done the Longdendale trail, Deep Clough or that area.
I've had years of practise now, so my film making has developed and improved over time I guess. Glad you found it interesting. I've not walked much yet up Longdendale as it's that much further away for me, but hope too when I can. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Well Patrick yet another wonderful walk lovely sunny brisk day brilliant ! we have some good news we are coming back but not until November this time so much going and staying in Bakewell again cant wait ! might bump into you again maybe have a pint !!
Not a bad day for January Russ! Roll on November then! 👍
Great vid patrick... Always enjoy them.. lovely story re neighbours. Our local area not far from Mansfield.. x
Many thanks Ali, glad you liked the video and the story of my neighbours 👍
@@solitaryrambler was lovely..its our golden in sept.. i was 15 and R 18 .. 2 children and 10 grandchildren and another due in july fingers xd . Happy days x
Patrick, pretty nice winter in Chicago ,you always feel better when you don't feel like walking, after the walk, you think clearer, and energized, that gives you the incentive the next time you feel sluggish, keep walking, my father always said the car is hazardous to your health, sit at home, get your drive 6 miles, sitting in your car, nice video, good comments
I agree Steven, once I'm out I feel considerably better for doing so. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Thanks for sharing this walk Patrick. I’m sure I spotted you in Duffield a month or so ago by the heritage station. One walk you might want to check out is from Radcliffe on Trent Rockley Park where you can walk alongside the Trent and down through Holme Pierrpont and towards west Bridgford. I used to live around there before moving to duffield. Planning to head out to Dove Dale. Looks gorgeous
Thanks for watching Adam. I've not been to Duffield for a while now, so that wouldn't have been me you saw. All the best 👍
It was interesting to hear how you go about creating the footage, I wouldn't even have considered the angles but it's obvious now you've demonstrated!
Thanks Steph, just one of those pointers I remember picking up myswlf when I went on a film making course a long time back 👍
Hello Patrick another great walk thank you too bad the church was lock up such a shame this is the way of our would now .
Thanks Shaun, yeah I can't seem to get inside many churches now sadly 👍
Nice walk there Patrick. The five pits trail is a nice walk isn’t it? You must be close to joining up all the sections as part of this current series of films? The section near Tibshelf is very nice with the fishing lakes isn’t it? Lovely story about your neighbours. 68 years of marriage is some achievement!
Thanks Anthony. Yes I do enjoy the Five Pits Trail and making films of it has given me the chance to explore it more, which I've haven't done much of before. I will indeed be featuring more of the trail in the next film. Glad you liked the story of my neighbours, yes 68 years is a real milestone! 👍😃
Nice one Patrick, not an area I’ve walked even though my daughter lives in Clay Lane near the south entrance to the train tunnel
Nice bright day for a stroll and filming
Cheers Ged, yes it was a good day in January for walking and filming 👍
Fabulous progressive chords in opening. I really liked it and enjoyable change of musical style. That's your best track. I like the hat a new look! Also hearing your experiences over Christmas and New Year, but lovely day for filming
I think I worked out your explanation of camera angles, as Michael not sure either. Did you meant there could be an impression of going in opposite directions (e.g. frame viewing directions) if your filming changes sides ? Never mind still nice scenery.🎬😏
Morning Shanita, thank you so much for your compliments on my music. I do try to experiment with different styles when I can, not always easy, but glad you liked this one. I perhaps didn't explain the camera angles bit too well, but yes I did mean giving the impression of walking back in the opposite direction if you exit a frame from the same side as the previous shot. It was indeed a lovely day for filming though. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great week 👍
hi Patrick,I don't know if you got my message about the video you did in clay cross and the surrounding area.i thought it was delightful as usual.the story about Dorothy and Dennis was so lovely.i can't wait for the next video.hope you are keeping safe and well.👍👍❌
Many thanks Elizabeth for watching and commenting. Where did you send a message to me - I've not received anything. Glad you liked the video, all the best 👍
when I watched your video on clay cross I sent my comment after I had watched it on the comment section.i do hope you can find it.but thanks for your reply.👍
Another great walk Patrick although a much smaller picture on utube at the start. I know Pilsley and visit the farm shop there. Haven’t walked much round there though.
Thanks for watching Kathryn, glad you enjoyed it. Not sure what you mean about a smaller picture though? I think you might be thinking of Pilsley at Chatsworth with the farm shop, this is a different Pilsley near Clay Cross 👍
It would be good to see you do the many routes around Dovestones.
On my evergrowing to-do list 👍
It’s a wonder we never met you around there Patrick, we did quite a bit of walking in that area in January, wasn’t the sun lovely?, we managed to get out walking almost every day, those air vents fir the train tunnel are same as the ones that go along ‘Butterley tunnel’, at Ripley, wouldn’t it be great if the Butterley tunnel was still accessible? Lovely video as usual thankyou 😊x
It was a good week of weather for January Della. Glad you got out too. Thanks for your comments and for watching as always 👍
Another cracking video Patrick, new coat?
Thanks Bryn! Yes the coat was a Christmas present to myself! 👍😃
