Was there last summer, great displays covering the history of communication and entertainment. Worth the trip. There is the New England Air Museum next to Bradly airport also. The people in the Winsor Locks area are so nice. These two must see places alone are worth the time to visit the area!

I've known Skip for years. He really enjoys conducting tours. He can sometimes be found at ARRL HQ conducting tours.

44:12 reminds me of the old blues song "Somebody Loan Me a Dime/ I need to call my old-time used to be.....". "Dropping a dime" on someone later morphed into "here's a quarter ---- call someone who cares".

Thanks for the video, what a cool place! That piano with the built in phonograph / radio is really neat. I believe Thomas organ co. made something in a similar vein called the "Thomas Music Center" - an organ with built in phonograph. No radio tuner though. I worked at a museum that had a Lowery Organo which was a retrofit that could be added to acoustic pianos and give them organ sounds. There were also versions built right into standard upright pianos.

At 25:40, galena is lead sulfide, which sometimes occurs in metallic-looking clusters of brittle, square-ish crystals that are electrical semi-conductors (diodes) and therefore useful as radio-frequency "detectors"; the chunk of leadbearing stone shown here is a poor representation of galena ore. Galena can easily be smelted into lead simply by heating it and was therefore extremely important to early civilizations. Some Galena deposits also contain up to 1/2 percent silver.

Don't take everything to the bank the docent, Skip, said about motion pictures. The second carbon-arc lamp was NOT hand-fed. It was a motor-driven axial arc lamp as perfected by Harry H. Strong of the Strong Electric Corporation in Toledo, OH. If a guide is there to teach history, you need to make sure his comments are factual. I know because I ran the damn things as an IATSE projectionist 50 years ago.

At 38:52 , the Not-sees had their own state radio station and only broadcast state-approved content (propaganda); but now we have two giant corporations, Sinclair and ClearChannel, controlling TV and Radio content over vast swaths of America, broadcasting misinformation and spreading fear and distrust. You can change the channel, but in many areas the content is pretty much the same regardless of the station disseminatng it.

I dont live too far away, i dont know if you can suggest something, but i have this idea about old radios...i did ww2 reenactment and the barracks events could really use period cabinet radios for atmosphere!!! The german Volksemphanger radio cabinet is bakelite, it could be reproduced and a blue tooth speaker installed inside for period sound..... someone could make a fortune off this idea....all reenactors would want one!!! Im eager to hear your reactions to this idea...thanks

Good idea! I bet someone adept at 3-D printing plastic could do that. I guess you would need a scan of that radio first. Not my expertise, but sounds interesting. Take care, WG7D

No. Windsor was not the First English Settlement in Connecticut. Just a Windsor lie.
