His pedaling is very clever! He uses it on the superior parts and keep the repeating chords dry. Which accentuate the feeling of different voices. He doesn't play at a tremendous speed either but have a constant pace mostly all the time. It is so fiery!
It’s seems like an absolutely perfect tempo for this composition. One can rush through it relying on the momentum and not give listeners the chance to relish the subtleties. But Richter allows us to hear MORE and be amazed again by how great this prelude is.
I have been working in this myself for a couple of months and have been listening to many pianists perform it.for inspiration. All are splendid compared to my pitiful efforts, but Richter? OMG l. Just amazing. the middle section gave me chills. I like it better than Horowitz, which is something I have never said before. Absolutely stunning performance.
Why do we always draw comparison between Horowitz and Richter? I mean it's always 'Horowitz and Richter ', I'm not criticising at all, I do that myself, I guess it really comes down to those two, there's this unspoken of consensus that they are the greatest.
Agreed, the descending octaves could topple St. Basil's, but the tender stuff is the most impressive. This giant of a man, a once-in-a-century titan, huge hands who can pop our hearts out of our chests, just lovingly caressing the keys during the middle section and at the very end. CHILLS!

Outstanding interpretation by Richter. I have heard Gilels' amazing performance. But Richter is from another planet!!! For me Richter and Gilels have the best performances on this marvelous prelude!!

Every time ai listen to another performance of the G minor, I compare it to this one by Richter. I’ve listened to well over a dozen. This remains the benchmark. Ashkenazi, Sokolov, Horowitz, Lang Lang, Rachmaninoff on piano roll, Prokofiev on piano roll, Scheps, Yuja Wang, Van Cliburn, Lisitska, Gilels, Kissin, Czifra, Lugansky. There are others I like but none as much as this one.
Sergio Fiorentino, you forget Sergio Fiorentino! Very different approach, but the only one in the same league as Richter and Horowitz (and, maybe, Sokolov)

Yes, the 1919 piano roll is available. But the best performance available to my ears, having heard Rachmaninoff as well as Horowitz (more than one performance), Gilels, Lang Lang, Listitska, Prokofiev (also piano roll I assume given the quality and date), Olga Scheps, Van Cliburn, Yuja Wang, Nikolai Lugansky, and God knows who I’m forgetting, is this one. Period. It isn’t close. A lot of the other performers are close to each other, but not to this. And yes, I prefer Richter to the composer’s own rendition. Richter finds more in the piece.
@@yehonatanmargolin2725 Aside from just liking his tempo and rubato choices, my answer is more subtlety, more control. If you listen to the middle section, particularly late in it, you will hear more distinctive voices singing, and singing more expressively. Going into the third section, he does the best job of building - it’s long, it’s consistent as it steadily gains intensity over s surprisingly long time, it’s about perfect. That’s just more control than anyone else is exercising.
I’ve listened to more than twenty performances of this. Old recordings, new recordings, piano rolls (including Rachmaninoff himself), Josef Hoffman (sic?), Prokofiev, Horowitz, Moisewitsch, Weissenberg, Chifra, Van Cliburn, Ashkenazi, Lisitska, Lang Lang, Kissin, Gilels, Sokolov, Alicia de Larrocha, Scheps, Yuja Wang, Lugansky, and that’s not a complete list. The answer to your question so far is No, no one has played it better.
