...The Edmund ... She was the pride of our family ...my great grandma was a Fitzgerald, as a little girl listening to the storyteller of the naming of the mighty ship... not really knowing until year's later the ship was named after the Fitzgerald's of our family...the many lives loss will never be forgotten...may they rest in peace!
My first northern Ontario fishing trip (Beatty Lake-Onaman Lake area) was the summer of '76, about half a year after the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. As we drove from Duluth northward along the Superior coastline, Lightfoot's ballad was being played by every radio station, in every small town, and also as we circumnavigated the Big Lake on our return trip. It was such a strong emotional experience to see the dangerous majesty of Gitche Gumee while listening to this song, and reflecting on the fate of those crewmen. It haunted me then, and here more than forty-four years later it still haunts me. That song sends shivers down my spine. I am blessed to live on Lake Superior, and to see how She can kick up into a fury is just awe-inspiring. Danger, peril and majestic beauty. Thanks for the video, Brenton.
😢 I get teary eyed. I pray for the crew members souls. I don't think they knew what hit them. That big ship was thrown around like a rag doll load and all. I pray they were already gone when the Mighty Fitz plunged to her grave. It's not just you.😢
Great video. I remember this event when I was a little kid. I remember Elvis died, Evil Kneivel jumping the Snake, and pow’s from Nam getting off the plane. The rest is a blur.
Beautiful video Brenton I haven't been to Whitefish point in a very long time the footage that you took is amazing and the museum is amazing they have a lot of artifacts with the Edmund Fitzgerald as well plus other shipwrecks inside that museum. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure. 😊😊🌹
People don’t understand just how dangerous the Great Lakes are. Lake Erie is bad because it’s so shallow. The wind can create huge waves in just a matter of time. I have a good friend that went out with buddies fishing and was 12-15 miles out on a claim day. 20 minutes later they was surfing waves in a 22ft boat and parting waves with the windshield trying to get back in. The pumps would not keep up with water coming in. When they reached Put-in-Bay they was standing in 6in on water. The outboard prop would come out of the water as waves went under them. My buddy really thought they was going down. I would rather be on the ocean than the Great Lakes. You are a brave man buddy.
I agree seems like the ocean has more space between waves, the great lakes can get nasty in minutes, me and 2 other guys were in a carp shoot on the bay of Green Bay, waves got big and choppy and my friend could not time the waves right, we sank and other boats, one was a new ranger bass boat, expensive, then we had to pay for boat recovery to drag boat to shore, then a boat picked us up, over shot us and was running us over, I was under the boat pushing another guy out of the way, lucky prop didn't get us, if you go down in some of the great lakes cold water u are done. Learned some lessons from that one.
We posted our tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald Anniversary on Friday. Love this one! We had the same creative idea in mind, Brenton. It would not be a complete tribute without this song.
Never seen that ... I’ve been to the ocean beaches of Texas , Louisiana , Mississippi , Alabama and Florida 👍🏻. I prolly will never make it up your way ...so I especially love seeing all your videos 🥰. Thank you 😎
chills! i'm a great lakes gal from Cleveland originally. sending this link to my bro he always connected to this tragedy, and the Gordon Lightfoot song. great video as always!
Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters, they see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. For He commands and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves of the sea. They mount up to the heavens, they go down again to the depths; their soul melts because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, so that its waves are still." Psalm 107:23-29 ⚓ Requiescat In Pace’! ⚓Valiant Crew Of The Edmond Fitzgerald.....
Sometimes I wonder what in the bottoms of the lake and the legends sometimes you wonder what happened that night the crew probably is still down there may god rest their soulm
I like the ending, we can really see the “gale of November”. I always wanted to see that area where the “Fitz” went down. I don’t think those sailers even realized what hit them when the boat went down. I think it split in half between waves on the surface and both halves instantly filled with water and plunged to the bottom. The force of the water going into the rooms would have knocked a few unconscious or killed them instantly, plus the water was so cold that it wouldn’t take a few minutes to freeze and/or drown anybody. Just like the Titanic, even if a person jumped into the water, the sub zero temperatures would get them and the two halves of the boat would suck them down with it. For proof of how fast the “Fitz” went down, just look at the life boats that they found, they are almost ripped in half. They were probably fastened with chains on a winch and they had a big air pocket under them creating resistance as the ship went down, until they gave way and floated to the top. I know how that ship went down. It was overloaded to begin with. It broke in half, like if you pulled the center pillars out from under a bridge, it would break in the middle and collapse. Captain McSorley already told Captain Bernie Cooper of the Arthur Anderson that he had two hatch covers off and it was listing to one side, that tells me that it was already cracked and starting to collapse in the middle and that forced the hatch covers to pop off, then it started taking on water, putting even more weight into an overloaded belly, then she just let go and folded like a fat guy on a card table. Great video.
I was there in June 2018 and the mosquitoes were terrible. The museums were open and I remember people running from building to building to avoid the blood suckers. I enjoyed looking at the deep diver suits they had on display.
I was 10 years old when she went down. My father was in the Coast Gard, on the cutter Kaw they used to break ice at the locks, and spent a lot of time there. He always told me how dangerous it was there. That lake could go from calm to treacherous in a heartbeat. He was so upset when the Fitz sank he lit 29 candels at our church and never fofgot to talk about it every November.
Never seen the lake so low! Dang looks a good 7 feet lower than the 80s when I lived there. Gotta wonder how far Caribou shoul is under the water. It may be exposed during moments of wave action.
Here’s what most people get about the Great Lakes is the waves that build up. Don’t have the distance like in the ocean to be like 50 feet or whatever 70 feet but they’re 20 feet high and only like 10 feet apart.

What a beautiful way to honor those brave sailors!!
Thanks for taking us Brenton!
Very well done. Thanks for a great video. 👍
I was 10 when she went down I remember it vividly she was so close to safety. Rest in Peace Sailors
Thanks Brenton. I was 15 when this happened. Didn’t seem possible in 1975. The 10th of November will never be forgotten.
Everytime I hear this treasure, I get choked up! Is it only me?
Me too. Perfect song and heart wrenching

I was jest 12 yrs. Old when this Horrible Day happened! Like December 7, this Day too will not be Forgotten! May the 29 Men RIP!
The lakes take lives and give them sometimes I wonder what the lakes hide could be ships frozen in time or ancient serpents we will never know
Very cool! An like how your beagle looked like he was driving. 👍🏻😁

It struck a lot of people hard. Have you heard the audio recording from the ship following the Edmond Fitzgerald? Very haunting
Great work boss
Thank you straw man! ;)
The Great Lakes are no place to be in November. I live on Lake Erie and she's a nasty one when she wants to be, scary as hell.
Oh yes! I've seen lake Superior raging in November also. Q: how is lake erie on say...May? I'll be coming in from the erie canal God willing.
God speed boys 💞💞💞🙏
Damn good video!
Gordon light foot did a good job on the music
One of the best songs ever recorded. So haunting.
That water scares me

This was filmed 3 years ago. Much higher now.
The captain of the Edmund Fitzgerald was named Ernest mcsorely and the 3rd mate's name was Michael armagost

Thank you. That's a huge ship. The radio exchange with the other boat before they went down is very eery to listen to. It's probably here on YT.
Grew up on Atlantic Ocean. This effing lake looks like the Atlantic ocean.
Thought that too! Never been, though!
@@kattoneycliffe6715 never been there either.
They r called "lakes" but geologists say they r inland seas
Should have left out the song. Don't recall a beagle being involved.
No way. Even John Steinbeck travelled with his poodle across the US. He wrote a book titled, Travels With Charley talking about those travels.
“Laker”
Lame. He didn’t even tour the ship.
The place was closed when we visited. Toured what we could. I thought that would be evident.
