The 6/0 and the 9/0 have the same gears and brakes. Only difference is that the 9/0 has a bigger in diameter and width spool, hence a higher line capacity. Theoretically the 6/0 can put out more punishment than the 9/0. The 6/0 is a tank.💪🏼💪🏼
A 6/0 Senator is wayyyy overkill for King Mackerel...and mahi as well come to think of it. He said he uses that 6/0 with 100 lb braided line for Kings and smaller sharks, etc. I live on the North Carolina coast and fish for Kings and mahi tons of times every year, been doing it for 25+ years. IF your only talking about Star drag reels like senators, then for king, mahi and even some decent sized wahoo can easily be caught with the 3/0 112h Senator. Which is the smallest size available. I have a setup where I have 4 Senator 3/0s on 4 7ft. 15-30 lb. rated trolling/boat rods. They are loaded with 340-350 yards of 20 lb mono and 12-15 ft. Of 40 lb flouro leader. Have caught hundreds of kings with this setup. Tons 40+ pounders and even several 50+ pounders including a 54 pounder I caught last summer on a 3/0 Penn. don’t go that big y’all it’s too much. If you wanna get real serious about king fishing and you tend to troll for them Mostly then get level drag reels like Daiwa TLD15’s/25’s/etc, Penn Squall 30 Level Drag or Avet 1 or 2 speed Fast retiree level wind reels. They are more expensive than the Senators (my 3/0s new we’re $95-$100 a piece I think). Star drags are a little better for live lining/drifting live bait and bottom fishing, but level drag reels are much better at trolling for nearly all deep pelagic sport fish
552 and a 4/0W is a deadly combo. 553 with a 12” extension and 6/0w loaded with quality 80lb braid will stop most anything that swims in coastal waters.
i have caught Jack Crevale (American GT) and shark from Land and boat with an abu Garcia 6500... 30lb plus Jack... and 4 ft shark....these reels are for targeting huuuuuge fish....
The mono backing is so the braid will wrap around the spool. Then it's 1000 yards of 100lb braid and then 80lb mono topshot. I have the same thing on my 9/0. Except mine is 10lb mono backing 700 yards of 100lb braid and 400 yards of 100lb mono
Old school 3/0 & 4/0 with the Newell extension kit with the long power handle....no other can compete.

I bought a 113hlw (the wide spool) It holds about the same line capacity as a 114. Do you think I could take sharks from a pier?

i have caught Jack Crevale (American GT) and shark from Land and boat with an abu Garcia 6500... 30lb plus Jack... and 4 ft shark....these reels are for targeting huuuuuge fish....

Both are correct. I've heard many people pronounce it both ways.
