A beautiful tribute to my Mother Eileen who then left Drmualish/Killagola, and went to England where she dedicated her life to nursing.Tom McBride was aware of this and while his song is not remotely refering to my Mother it is however exposing the only way to a future for talented young Irish Women. Ireland you failed the Youth of the Country
As a nurse myself (although now retired) my youngest daughter is nursing in England. This song Is my favourite. God Rest you Big Tom. You were something else. I loved your music since I first heard your Album in 1966.
Sad that till about a few weeks back I heard this maestro's voice, on You tube for the first time, and am sure he had a voice which conveyed the essence of country music to all those lovers of this genre in music......RIP Big Tom.
As a Scot who loves my country's music and it's great singers in both English and Gaelic never have I heard singer who sang with so much feeling as Tom McBride. You felt that he sung each song especially for you. He will be missed greatly. God bless you Tom, one of Ireland's greatest sons who had such a supportive wife as Rose. RIP.
Sad to see big tom gone rip he was the first band I went to hear when I started going to the dance in ardboe Hall all those years ago he's gone to join the big band up yonder. RIP
“She was just a girl of 19 years When she set out on her own She left a brother and four sisters And her parents back at home The reason she was leaving, she saw no future here To fulfill her one ambition, make nursing her career To the old church in Rumford that's where she went to train And it would be a long, long time before she'd be home again She said goodbye to all her friends and the ones that she loved dear As she left her home for London to make nursing her career She was just a 19-year-old girl who loved her parents dear But she left her home in Ireland to make nursing her career Many hours of work and study, oh, how time passed away Soon with her fellow students will come graduation day Before she graduated, for weeks she saved the fare To bring her mom and dad from Ireland for her special day to share But a drunk man in a speeding car, stole her dream away And her parents never seen the girl on her special day She never did return to Ireland and sometimes she shed a tear As she recalls the day she left home to make nursing her career She was just a 19-year-old girl who loved her parents dear But she left her home in Ireland to make nursing her career When she left her home in Ireland to make nursing her career.”

“She was just a girl of 19 years
When she set out on her own
She left a brother and four sisters
And her parents back at home
The reason she was leaving, she saw no future here
To fulfill her one ambition, make nursing her career
To the old church in Rumford that's where she went to train
And it would be a long, long time before she'd be home again
She said goodbye to all her friends and the ones that she loved dear
As she left her home for London to make nursing her career
She was just a 19-year-old girl who loved her parents dear
But she left her home in Ireland to make nursing her career
Many hours of work and study, oh, how time passed away
Soon with her fellow students will come graduation day
Before she graduated, for weeks she saved the fare
To bring her mom and dad from Ireland for her special day to share
But a drunk man in a speeding car, stole her dream away
And her parents never seen the girl on her special day
She never did return to Ireland and sometimes she shed a tear
As she recalls the day she left home to make nursing her career
She was just a 19-year-old girl who loved her parents dear
But she left her home in Ireland to make nursing her career
When she left her home in Ireland to make nursing her career.”
