Mirabai Chanu rewards truckers who gave her free lifts during training days

- Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, India’s first medallist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is a woman of her words. After her win, Mirabai thanked all those who helped her dream come true, and expressed her desire to reward the truckers who gave her a lift to her training academy back in the day. And today, she is doing so.
The 26-year-old hailing from a village in East Imphal in Manipur won a Silver medal by lifting a total of 202 kg at the Tokyo Olympics. She had to travel from her home about 30 km away to her training academy in Imphal.
Back in her training days, public transport was hard to find and coming from an underprivileged family, private transport was not an option. So, Mirabai would take lift from trucks carrying sand to Imphal.
“I wanted to see the truckers who provided me regular lifts from home to the training centre and seek their blessing. They really helped me during my hard times of training. I’m looking for those sand-carrying truckers so that I can try to extend whatever help they may require now,” she told Hindustan Times.
Chanu has found those truckers and is helping them in whatever way she can.
On Thursday, she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to those that helped her. She treated 150 truck drivers and their helpers to a nice lunch and gifted them all a shirt and a Manipuri scarf.

The "This" here refers to this act of remembering somebody who had done something good to someone.

I remember, during my school days, I addressed a north eastern girl as Chinese. She was so infuriated by my remark, she beat me black and blue. Actually, I didn't mean to hurt her, because we barely had any access to their culture, and we didn't even know that they were our own people. I was innocent then, but today when I look at the glories of Mary Komm and Mirabai, I do realize the pain my words could have caused to my schoolmate. Today, all I carry for the north eastern people is respect and respect
