    Just finished a diy cnc pen plotter. I 3D printed my parts based loosely on Mr. Innovatives design. It was a lot of work to get everything dialed in. Your software instruction are the best. Although when using inkscape I had to use a scaling factor even though I was using mm units.

    It is so funny that you posted this right now. For the past week I have been thing about building one of these on my own!

    If anyone is finding that their XY motors are only moving the pen around 40% of the area that they should be; I had to change both lines $100 and $101 from 40.000 to 100.000 in the GRBL setup document. That sorted it for me so that the X and Y are at the correct scale.

    Hi, I wanted to congratulate you on the project ... it's really crazy!
    I scrupulously followed the step-by-step video instructions, but I encountered 3 "problems":
    1) Right / left swing of the pen (slight, but prevents small details);
    2) Up / down swing of the Y when the servo clicks or in extension beyond 50%;
    3) Using the square procedure only about half of the effective area is covered (225x250mm). The $ H procedure is successful.
    I wanted to understand if the first 2 points are normal or not and how to solve point 3. Thanks a lot and congratulations again.

    • @DIYMachines
      @DIYMachines  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words BlackGeare, I'm glad to hear you managed to follow my instructions. :)
      To answer your points:
      1) This can be reduced by having less distance between the 3D printed pen slider and the mount it is on. Though too closes and it will not slide freely. A better solution is to mount the pen slider on two small steel rods. This would almost eliminate it but I one of my main design goals was to limit cost and this would have required more steel rod and an additional linear bearing.
      2) This is something that has become more apparent to me since I published the design. Where the teeth catch the the main slider you could take the 90 degree edge of with some sand paper and make it more of a radius. As for the extension, this is another cost management choice. Ideally we would have to linear rails - one each side of the print area but this would certainly be a much bigger cost. To make up for this movement at full extension I designed the pen part so it can rise and fall by itself to compensate for this. A slight trade of win accuracy for a big cost saving.
      3) To increase the printable area of the machine if it physically is able to travel further on each axis just create a larger document size in Inkscape.
      I hope these points help.
      Lewis

    • @BlackGeare
      @BlackGeare 3 роки тому

      @@DIYMachines Thanks a lot for the answer. I fully understand the need to reduce costs and believe that the project itself is still great. To mitigate point 2 I have reduced the angle to 35 degrees, but I think the main problem is due to the "speed" of the servo movement (too lightning-fast click).
      For point 3 is it better to have the origin in the corner (from $ H) or in the center of the print area?

    Hi everybody,

    I built (thanks to this amazing tutorial, a big thank you!), this machine.
    The machine works, I could test it with drawings in .gcode format but the problem is that the Inkscape extension to generate this famous gcode does not work. After many attempts, python updates and other manipulations, this extension of Inkscape does not work because the lxml is not up to date and it is impossible for me to update it.
    - Do you know what other software could replace Inkscape?
    - Or if by any chance it is possible that the machine works with another file type than gcode?

    I am using an iPad Pro to create the drawings and vectorise them. I was thinking of creating the drawings on ipad and then sending them to a mac book pro in inkscape to change the file type but maybe there is an app that allows saving to the correct format directly from an ipad?

    If you have any clues it would be a great relief for me. I think I've reached the end of my skills in this area...
    I thank you in advance for your precious help.
    I wish you a lovely evening,
    L.M

    thank you very much for the video.I am wanting to handwrite lots of A4 letters, Will it be possible to scan one of my letters and then use your machine with the pen to perfectly replicate my hand written letter, so that it looks hand written?

    Thanks for the well made tutorial! Any thoughts on how to make this plotter without the need for a base, it would allow to write on bigger and thicker surface. Also are the motor strong enough to write vertical? For example I set up the machine on a wall and it can draw. My daughter room's need some more artwork :)

      Thanks Loïc. Goo question about making it without a base. I suppose for what you're suggesting you could attach it to a wooden frame instead of the board, but have the frame sit on the the topside of the printed 'feet' and screw in from below. This would then make the surface of the wall level with he drawing plane. Motor wise, I think it should be OK. Slow the movements down when you export the GCODE - that should help prevent any slipping of the timing belts. Most of the weight (the two stepper motors) is very central to the main machine linear rail on purpose to keep the weight on the extending arm to a minimum.

      @@DIYMachines Thanks for the detailed answers. Still wondering the trade-off between all flat or longer pen offset but the lever the pen create might be an issue with rough surface. Got the IKEA cutting board already, but it will stay on the kitchen this round :) will go with your suggestions.

    I am really enjoying the results I get from this, very accurate. I am unfortunately getting an Inkscape crash whenever I try to use the gcode extension on an SVG file with lots going on. Simpler designs convert with no problem and look great on the finished paper. Is there any work around for a big load of gcode that needs creating? In smaller parts perhaps?

    I have homing, X and Y moves working perfectly. However, I can only get the pen to move up, not down. I issue M3 S90 and the pen moves up (servo rotates to 90deg). However, when I issue M5, nothing happens. I can issue M3 S10 and the servo goes to 10 degrees but M5 does nothing. What am I doing wrong?

    Please tell me, is there such an opportunity for this device, not to draw the whole drawing at once, but in segments, for example, I drew one line and drove off to the zero point for a couple of seconds, then again drew another line and again drove off for a few seconds, and apply this action for everything drawing, yes it will be much more in terms of the time spent, but the fact itself is such an action possible or not?

    Hi Lewis. The plotter works great for me but when I use Inkscape to create a g code file with a few objects, when it comes into Chilipper, there's a line from the origin to the first object and then line connects all the other objects. But when I made the boundary box file it was ok. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Gord

    Hi Lewis! All have been printed, but there is too much play between the pen holder and the plastic where it mounts, so the pen is not perfectly stiff/still when used for drawing. Is there perhaps another way to try and fix this? Any possibility you can share the design files?

    Couldn't get it to work because it kept slamming into the side with the X axis motor. Then it occurred to me that the build plane is wrong. At 12:39 you say to set the width and height to 225 and 250 (in millimeter) respectfully. However the physical print area it only 30x30. Once adjusted it was fine.

    Great videos. I have to try this. But I need to modify it a bit. I need to print on cardboard cylinders.
    This should be possible by locking the pen arm and use the stepper for rotation in stead... or am I wrong on this?

      Dont lock the pen arm just add two servos attached to two rods with bearings on one end in a support housing with, you may need some extra parts just do some research and im sure youll find what you need, even possibly a video explaining how.

    I use inkscape to generate gcodes too. But been facing a trouble lately. The pen directly goes to a different location without lifting up, this makes a straight line that shouldn't be there. Any fixes for this? Idk if the generated gcode has mcode in it between paths to lift up the pen or not. But if they're there and this still happens, what might be the issue here?

    Are you sure the settings are correct? $100=40 (x, step/mm) $101=40 (y, step/mm) are really high on my machine, 4 steps / mm gets me 78mm when i try to draw 100mm.
