AVAA Prof. Pure Comedy really is amazing, as are the two preceding it - finding this one a return to that form and really enjoyed your analysis on top of it. Also as a middle aged man called Josh who deep down wants to finally be a songwriter your words were of great comfort and support!
25:15 Was fully expecting you to segue into a premeditated ad-read right there. I was glad to hear you talk about what Better Help actually is, though. Also: Listen to Pure Comedy. I know you mostly review new music but I would pay for a video on Pure Comedy. I love that album so much that I wrote a paper on it when I was an undergrad. I find that among FJM fans it is very polarizing. Thank you for the video as always!
I’ve also listened to this one multiple times. The Astral Weeks comment is tongue in cheek because it’s not “jazz” per se as the character in the song suggests, and as the psychedelic hits, FJM is unable to refute her claim. It’s a funny line that tacitly narrates the “come up”
I’m surprised you didn’t comment on the last lyrics of the last song, especially as you checked your baby monitor. The buildup to “and time can’t touch me” describes parenthood pretty well
AVAA I'm glad you mentioned the similarities to later period Dylan as I definitely noticed that too, but the album that this reminds me most of sound wise is Leonard Cohen's Death of a Ladies Man
AVAA! I’m so excited to hear your thoughts about this flawed masterpiece! I would love to hear your thoughts on his novel included in the liner notes for his debut as FJM: Fear Fun and his middle three albums too. I Love You, Honeybear is perfection in my mind, and Pure Comedy is timeless forever. God’s Favorite Customer is also spectacular and really shows how deep his interrogations of himself can go. Since Chloë he’s sought to remove himself from his work, but his first four albums are confessional to a fault. The song “The Songwriter” is where he apologizes to his wife for objectifying her in his art and since then he’s been way more reticent to disclose intimate details of his personal life. Having a daughter will do that to you
Great review and insight. Your take on the issues facing society and FJM's ability to thread the line and comment in a poetic yet not preachy way is spot on. The songs are meant to be listened to as an album, didn't make sense as singles, but as a whole it really takes you on a ride. Sometimes I think it's too heady, then the music pulls me in and I'm feeling the lyrics and melody in a deeper way. Thanks Professor.
AVAA. I admittedly haven't listened to the album since I've been listening to Kendrick pretty much nonstop, but love all FJM previous albums and am excited to hear this one
AVAA, Important context for this album I think is FJM becoming a literal father a few years ago. Ending Summer's Gone, a song about middle age, with a lyric about his child scraping her knee and feeling like time can't touch him is a beautiful finish.
First time I've heard someone mention She Cleans Up being about allyship. Is it just that obvious that ppl don't talk about it or do they really not see it?? I think there is pretty strong vein of feminism that runs through this album more than any other work of his. Have to imagine some kind of response to the Roe v Wade decision
I think corpse dance is a reference to his first albums first song “Fun times in Babylon” “Before they put me to work in a govt camp, before they do my face up like a corpse and say get up and dance, before the beast comes looking for last years rent”
1) the “corpse” line is a reference to “before they do my face up like a corpse and say ‘get up and dance’ from the opening song to his previous album “Fear Fun.” He referenced “Fear Fun” in that way twice on this new album, once on the first track and again on the final track. 2) the astral weeks line is making fun of someone who thinks that album qualifies as actual jazz. it’s akin to me saying Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” is some great country music. 🤠
I wonder if FJ ever asked to do his songs with the Fleet Foxes or whether he was always going to go independent. It sure would have changed FF's trajectory if he were allowed.
You should really find some time to listen to Pure Comedy at least, wake up at 04:00, maybe pretend to go to the gym when youre really in the parking lot listening to music in your car (its worth it). No need to review it, just do yourself a solid. Avaa.
That Andrew Bird album is great. The only reason I don't think this new Father John Misty album is the greatest, is because his first three albums, fear fun, honey bear and pure comedy are such tough acts to follow, nothing has compared since. I mean you put mash out with the rest of the world and it's the greatest. But you put it against Josh's other work and, eh... It's a bit better than mid! But that's still saying a lot! Honey bear is a total 10/10 deluxe.
Or or or, you could just not watch. Some of us come to commentary videos for commentary. I guess you just want him to say, “me like album, album good, me think it 7/10, unga bunga”
AVAA.
I'm genuinely surprised you've never heard Pure Comedy. You need to get on it ASAP, you'll adore it.
Also, yes. This lightning looks nice.
I can see it being one of his favorite albums ever
@@spazaliciousexactly. Either PC or Honeybear!
Leaving LA has the best storytelling in any song released this century. It's 12 minutes long, and it feels like five. It's a modern epic.
@@thegeramsHoney Bear for the Melodies, Pure Comedy for the lyrics and the concept. I feel like a dude like Skye would appreciate Pure Comedy more.
Not finished with the video yet but I hope you give a chance to the rest of FJM's discography, professor.

That metaphor about "the whole world defending Goliath against David" is so potent and heartbreaking. AVAA

AVAA Prof hope the fam had a great Thanksgiving.

That would make a lot of sense, if you’ve listened to track 7 of Fear Fun!
AVAA, I enjoy the screen time your cute doggo got on this vid!

I can second the love for listening to this epic album in the gym, thanks Skye. AVAA!
AVAA. I admittedly haven't listened to the album since I've been listening to Kendrick pretty much nonstop, but love all FJM previous albums and am excited to hear this one
AVAA fjm is one of my faves. Loving the album so far
Can’t wait to listen to this album ❤ thanks for the reminder 🫡
AVAA,
Important context for this album I think is FJM becoming a literal father a few years ago. Ending Summer's Gone, a song about middle age, with a lyric about his child scraping her knee and feeling like time can't touch him is a beautiful finish.
Crazy that this video is almost exactly as long as your last FJM review
Bye Prof Skye, amazing video, as always!
Toby is cute! You need to listen/review Pure Comedy. When I first heard it, it struck me like lightening.
Really like this album. Stronger than his last. Favorite song," Screamland".
I love FJM. Think he’s the West Coast version of Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) in the most positive way
Other than their dance moves, I don't notice much similarity in their styles.
AVAA, this one really hits for me.
AVAA, the first thing I noticed when I listened to the title track for the first time was also, “wow, this sounds a lot like Isn’t It A Pity” 😂
I mainly tune in for the kendrick and drake stuff. But i am stopping by to drop off a like and a view.

Man you gotta listen to Pure Comedy
AVAA
HECK YES I WAS HOPING YOU'D REVIEW THIS
some part of me was afraid you wouldn't like FJM and i was much saddened by this thought
I think corpse dance is a reference to his first albums first song “Fun times in Babylon”
“Before they put me to work in a govt camp, before they do my face up like a corpse and say get up and dance, before the beast comes looking for last years rent”
avaa 🎉 Pure comedy is my all-time favorite album😢

Don’t worry sky, we love Toby
If you haven't heard I Love You Honeybear (his 2015 album) i highly highly recommend it
I wonder if FJ ever asked to do his songs with the Fleet Foxes or whether he was always going to go independent. It sure would have changed FF's trajectory if he were allowed.

AVAA! Please listen to chasing moving trains by roy blair. It came out a few weeks ago and its me and all my college friends’ album of the year!
AVAA, prof skye in his l.a era
What does AVAA stand for?
Awesome video, as always

“I obliged later when you asked me to choke you” still lives rent free in my head.
I love those albums but gods favorite customer has to be my favorite. So good
“She Cleans Up” sounds exactly like “I Can’t Dance” by Genesis.
Did you get that from fantano or did he get it from you? 😂you aren’t wrong btw
It's pretty good but GOD'S TRASH is the best! (The fake KL diss track)
Hi foucault
I think Kendrick's album wore off of me faster than this one, but they have both been on constant rotation
I found his new single cheesy
