This is helpful. I have a colleague who has a tendency to only talk about himself when I run into him- what he ate for breakfast, why he is indispensable to everyone around him, his tenth recounting of his trip to France five years ago and I feel trapped into the same dull topics. The last time I saw him, I awkwardly blurted out, "did you see FX's Shogun" out of the blue during an unrelated conversation to try to change topics.
One day when you are feeling bold..."Hey _____, I've noticed a pattern where you really freely share lots of stuff with me. But I can't recall a time that you've asked me a question...what are you curious about?" It's a (small) social risk...yet I've taken it dozens of times and it hasn't failed me yet to redirect the conversation and illuminate whatever self centeredness was going on prior to shifting their focus outward.
Always of value to converse, and be on the look out for that value regardless of the topic. Typically the value nugget gained is one that may not always be the most apparent - but gleaned by way of effort expended. And bonus if the topic is one we are vested in!
I love your We connect cards and have followed some of your videos...I have two teenage girls and they are in need of questions and strategies to get to know their peers in more meaningful ways. Any videos geared towards teenage connections?
Karen, thanks so much for reaching out. Tomorrow actually, I'm filming an entire series of 10+ videos that will be super useful to your daughters. Those will likely go live between late December and January 😃 Thanks for asking. In the meantime, they may enjoy this one: ua-cam.com/video/797VE5w-Xjs/v-deo.html
