Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak was my absolute FAVOURITE and it gave me such an amazing boost into my creativity. I mostly draw as my outlet but I started dabbling in writing, character creation and roleplay. It may be a little cringe but I've evolved from the typical one liners and more into novella lengths after 10+ years at this point. By extension I've also met my partner through Rp and I'm the happiest I've ever been. Darren Shan will forever be a very happy core memory for me
these books shaped so much of my childhood. I still maintain they’re true somehow… These books have so much potential in cinema, not movies but maybe an hbo scale show. I’d eat it up as I’m sure we all would. If it was made by someone as passionate as us
I reading this book as a teen & it really got me into reading. I never finished it got to book 4 & stopped for whatever reason...now being 35 i finally decided to finish and it was / is an amazing story as i remembered reading it again. I appreciate his story telling.
I think the funniest thing about Darren Shan's books is that not only were they influential in shaping my childhood from late elementary school onward, but also is what had my parents basically attempting a weird sort of intervention for my "dark" interests. Lol. Love Darren Shan, and I'll always love his books. Very cool to see the man himself
The Cirque du Freak series is definitely THE thing that shaped my tastes in media as a kid haha. For years now Ive kept an eye out for more Darren Shan books being sold in my local stores to fatten up my collection. Such a shame that they're so hard to find for me... aside from the Cirque series in libruaries. Mayhaps it's too niche in my country :(
I adored Darren. Loved the Demonata books. Wish they made them in to films. I read a few of the zombie books when I was 19. Would skip college to read them instead. The vampire series was a huge part of my childhood. My brother and sister read them after me and I reread them all the time. Delighted to see Darren on your channel.
Funny he mentioned it, I read Demon Thief first and loved it, then went back to Lord Loss and then read in the right order after that. I was so shocked at the 1st book. Bec then was probably my favourite. Made me think of Ancient Ireland, like Bec existed along with the Irish myths and for some reason it was in my head through out that she was Irish. Must reread them all again
I loved lord loss, but there was another book that did the same basic intro except chess themed as fuck. I got up to slawter or however you spell it and just couldn't. I hate that "nobody believes me" trope. Like this bit in wolfenstien the new order when the grandma is like "there are no rebels" like bitch A you're under nazi occupation and B. This is a wolfenstien game cam we just skip this please?
@@Frankendiaz I still have it. Cousin a year younger than me read it and freaked tf out, so I went out and bought it. It did the opposite for me. I thought it made death seem less scary.
Omg this guy was one of my main inspirations in my artist career! 🤩 if it weren’t for him I don’t think I would ever have any of my characters and current interests I have now :3 I even named one of my ocs Sam after the character Sam grest 😂
I was so excited to hear about this interview, and it did not disappoint! Darren is a MASSIVE inspiration for me, and he's such a lovely guy. I met him twice at book signings and I was too nervous to speak 😂
I was nerding so hard with this conversation! I’ve been reading his books since 7th grade when I lived in California (I am 31 now turning 32 soon!) and hearing Darren speak about his books was such an amazing treat! Thank you so much for this!
So happy to see hes still kicking. Loved the darren shan books growing up i still love coming back to them. Such a well rounded world and brilliant depth to the lore and history of the characters. The larten spin off is peak too.
whatd you think of the movie liz i heard its basically the first three books in one film john c reily was mr crepsley and he did a fantastic job acting as him
When I was in year 11 (about 13 years ago, welp), a small group of us took a school organised trip to go to a Darren Shan signing/talk, as he'd just released his new book at the time (the thin executioner) - and someone said basically what you did at the beginning of the episode, and he did in fact give the exact same answer lmaooo. He was so great and so patient answering a bunch of teenagers questions, and I remember I didn't have the money to buy his new book so I took 'Slawter' with me, which he happily signed and was just so nice to us all. Demonata and cirque du freak definitely shaped my love of media and literature - so happy to see this interview
OKAY WHY THE HECK IS THE SAGA OF DARREN SHAN SO FREAKING UNDERRATED

I remember standing in a queue in the Waterstones in the Thistle Centre in Stirling with some friends to get Hell's Heroes signed. Still got it today.

Wonderful podcast! I’m a fan Aleena, you come so prepared with great questions and insight.❤
Stellar Interview! So muck knowledge and wisdom imparted by Darren
I wish you had asked about the possibility of an anime adaptation.
Legend!!
whatd you think of the movie liz i heard its basically the first three books in one film john c reily was mr crepsley and he did a fantastic job acting as him
the movie absolutely butchered the whole story forcing a second to not be wanted by the masses
Loved the series, movie not so much , I wish they would make it in a TV series or remake the movie.
We need more book for the Demonata series 😢
