  • This is not a tutorial video. It's just a series of daily exercises that I do to improve my control, balance, speed, power and endurance.
    You can find a lot of tutorial videos on the web that can explain every technique and exercises that I do in this video.
    About MY workout:
    At the beginning, usually, I set the bpm at 100 (reference speed in the video: 130bpm) and then I increase it gradually with gap of 5 bpm each.
    According to the bpm I'm playing I use this type of motions:
    Leg motion (from 100 to 150)
    Leg / ankle motion (from 150 to 190)
    Ankle motion (from 190 to 220)
    Swivel motion (from 220 to 260)
    I use the Demon Drive double bass pedal setting in a longboard mode with very tense springs. The beaters are made of wood.
    Every exercise is done for MINUMUM FOR 2 MINUTES EACH and with all the foot techniques that I need in MY drumming (heel up, heel down and swivel motion).
    About the ENDURANCE:
    I set the metronome at 160-170 bpm and I play until I can. Every time I write down how long I resisted so the next time I try to improve that result.
    I do the same setting the bpm at my maximum speed so get used to it.
    Remember to control your breath and to be relaxed much as possible!

    Hey Riccardo! I’m having some trouble coming up with a good workout routine to get my feet to where I can hold a steady 16th stroke roll at 209 bpm. Some days I can do it and others I can’t. I have completed Marthyn Jovanovic’s Bass Drum Mastery Course. Currently I have two days that I alternate between. Both are done at slower tempo‘s and are more focused on working on the control. I like the exercises you do in this video and I want to implement them into a workout routine that I can do every week to get my foot speed up to where you are at. Would you mind giving me an example of how you structure your workout routine every week? Do you just do the same exercises every day? Do you alternate between these exercises and endurance exercises on another day? When you perform these exercises, do you just do them at one or two speeds, or do you go until you can’t anymore? Currently I am alternating between a hand workout day and a foot workout day. I usually practice technique around 30 minutes before working on songs, but I can push it up to one hour if necessary. I have no problem sticking to a plan as long as it is going to give me some results, but I just need someone to but me in the right direction. Any help would be appreciated.

    I practice double bass a weird way,what i do is put on an album doesn't matter what it is,could be maiden,metallica,immortal,nile,whatever you get the idea. What i will do is constant double bass under everything for the full length of the album but i will do the stick stuff just like the album ,what this does for me is help to separate my feet from my hands and help me to be able to play double bass under any type of drum beat and it also keeps me from getting bored. I know this is not a normal way to practice double bass but it works for me.

    Hi guys. Im really curious abt "lower end" pedals (e.g Iron Cobra 200) and "higher end" pedals (e.g Pearl Demon Drive). I dont really feel comfortable with my Iron Cobra 200 as for some reason i cant control my leg to play double pedal. Without pedal i can shake my leg normally on the floor. So is it because of the pedal itself or just that i suck ? FML

    • @davidhewitt3542
      @davidhewitt3542 7 років тому +1

      Are you playing heel down?
      Because I have had a similar problem starting out with the heel down method myself and part of the problem for me was that with a double pedal, no matter how much tweaking you do they never feel and respond the same.
      (Probably because one has more weight and momentum due to the mass of the connecting rod etc...)
      I have subsequently experimented with the heel/toe method (with some success).
      i.e that is:
      1) pressing the toe down whist raising the heel 3/4 inch (heel down on beat stroke) and then
      2) dropping the heel in a rocking motion (heel bounce off beat stroke)
      (i.e. try imagine your foot's weight is sliding forwards slightly whist taking some weight off the toes as you do this.)
      P.s you can also do a heel bounce on beat stroke then heel down off beat stroke combo which ever works best for you.
      Although this seems to work better I have found that the pedals still feel different and that if you are aware of what angle your foot is at (not when the beater hits but) when you feel the maximum force has been transferred to the better (and note this angle) you will see that this angle is different for both feet (because as both pedals are different i guess)
      Once this is noticed it becomes easier to get a faster rhythm going between the feet as you are not trying to do the same action exactly on both feet and you over come the problem of one foot not being able to dribble its "basket ball" lol....
      This is how i am doing it and thinking about it hope this helps you or someone else FYI I'm no expert..............
      (p.s im also sitting quite high, like stool height so that the thighs are not flat, more like a 20 deg slope as i think its easier to use more weight instead of mostly muscle)....
      P.S. also a KEY for me.(Try it with you leg shake as it will help enormously).. was not thinking only in terms of a stomp down... where as it is better to think of every note as a wave... ie incorporating an up and a down.... (this analogy helped me enormously)....try it with the leg shake... think of each note as not just being just like down, down, down, etc... but being in fact actually being up, down, up, down, up, down etc...
      This helps so much as it gets you to feel the offbeats between each stroke and helps with timing because your not trying in vain to feel exactly where to drop a note, instead your just feeling the pulse and when that pulse gets to the bottom peak that's when the note hits the floor...

    While the exercises are useful, the time with the click here is terrible. Not a good standard to set for a beginner. Play with accuracy.
    Also, you are using different techniques for left (heel down) and right (heel up) foot, which is probably not helping.

  • @jackmaguire1158
    @jackmaguire1158 5 років тому +1

    What I still don’t understand is whether you’re supposed to practice with just ankle motion if you’re only playing the exercises at say, 120 BPM. Or should you use legs since that would come naturally at that speed, and only practice with just ankles once you get beyond a certain tempo? Is it worth practicing ankle motion alone at slower speeds, or can you only start practicing ankle motion when you reach high speeds?

    • @RazeTheWeak
      @RazeTheWeak 4 роки тому

      Practice both. Do your full leg motion (flat foot technique) with ankle weights on. Don't let any ankle movement happen when you are doing this. 13 notes R foot, 3 notes pause, 13 notes L foot, 3 notes pause and so on. 2 minutes 120, 2 minutes 130, etc.. up to 150. After that take a short break. Then start at 150 BPM. Focus on using only ankle and keeping the hip flexor relaxed. Should feel like you are dribbling the pedal like a basketball. Do constant 8th notes with your left foot for 2 minutes, then 2 at 160, then 2 at 170. Go until failure. Then do it with the R foot. Note the difference. Do this every day for 2 weeks and get back to me with your progress.

    • @EmondJeremie
      @EmondJeremie 7 років тому +2

      The tighter the springs, the more muscle you need to press down.
      For ankle motion, I use way less spring tension and sit farther back on my throne and from the pedals so that the natural ankle movement can happen.
      Look up James Paynes, he uses low tension and splitboard pedals.

    In my opinion, double strokes and paradiddles are kinda useless for double bass drumming. Doing groups of 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s and 8s are way more useful. Also, setting up a tempo and doing 8ths, triplets, 16ths, quintuplets etc. all the way up to 32ths (four bars each) is a great exercise (I'd call it transition build-up).
