I live in NZ, and there's been a movement to build backyard skink habitats. I've built my own recently, but while that grows, there's one that clearly enjoys my long lawn. I'm hoping they'll come and eat my aphids and slugs, as well as the native plants.

Jamaica recently had a bad dengue fever outbreak so the government would have been spraying to kill mosquitos and control the outbreak. Businesses that rely on tourism would have been under even more pressure to make sure they were keeping mosquito populations down. Having lived in the Caribbean for almost half of my life, believe me, dengue is not something you want to get. Even less if you are in a foreign country.

When you know that cabbage worms are a problem and don't bother covering them with row cover, you are taking a risk. Nasturtiums lure them away from cabbages to some extent. Enough to skip the BTK for me.

I've not needed BTK for a couple years now. I see the butterfly that makes the caterpillar - but no real damage. I have no idea why, other than maybe my wasps are dealing with them.
If they were covered then the wasps would not have access to them. I prefer wasps to row covers because that's even easier :)

VERY ENJOYABLE CHAT--I'M TRYING TO DO THINGS CHEAPER ALSO-- STEFAN IS RIGHT ON THE ECONOMICAL SIDE OF THINGS-WE ARE TRYING TO DO THE TRIO PLANTING, MIXING THE PLANTINGS UP SO BUGS HAVE HARD TIME TO FIND THE LESS IMMUNE PLANTS. I LET PARSNIPS BLOOM-WOW WHAT BLOOMS- LOTS PREDATORS IN THIS AREA. I DO GRAFTING APPLE/ PEARS. 1 PEAR AT FIRST, THE APPLE BLOOMING SAME TIME OF YEAR=POLLINATION GOOD. TRULY ENJOY YOYR IDEAS. WE HAD TONS GARTER SNAKES WHEN I PLANTED SOME RYE IN FALL-THEN SPRING TIME SNAKES ALL OVER TIL I PLOWED THE RYE INTO SOIL-GREEN MANURE.

Great discussion. I love listening to organic techniques like trap crops because I've seen it work in my own garden. And it's encouraging to hear that there does seem to be some discipline around produce labeled organic but I've been hearing a lot about Apeel being sprayed even organic lately. Apeel is something they portray as natural preservative but most of the ingredients are unknown and some say unsafe. It would be nice if there was transparency on things like that but nothing is labeled.
