I love this song! My grandma used to sing this song to me when i was a baby. She bought me a jewlery music box with this lullaby. I used to play it every time i missed her.

My great-grandmother used to sing this song for me and my brother when i was very young. Now i am 16 years old, and i always cry when i play this song with my shamisen. Rest in peace, sweet Elizabeth.

So many are in awe of the beauty of this song that it is neglected that this is a song of pain also. He loved her and gave her all he could and still he lost her and she would never love him.
So imo there should be some element of pain in the singing and this is not only a comforting song...its a song about love and loss...and this version has those elements of beauty and pain imo ... beautifully done

There is an oral tradition in Ireland that the song - or at least the lyrics as we know them today - originated in County Mayo in the second half of the sixteenth century (the first verse is an almost verbatim translation of a Gaelic ballad.)

Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
    To cast me off discourteously.
And i have loved you so long,
    Delighting in your company.
    Greensleeves was all my joy
    Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.
Thy smock of silk, both fair and white,
    With gold embroidered gorgeously;
    Thy petticoat of sendal right,
And these I bought thee gladly.
    Greensleeves was all my joy
    Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.
I bought thee kerchiefs for thy head,
    That were wrought fine and gallantly;
I kept thee at both board and bed,
    Which cost my purse well-favoredly.
I have been ready at your hand,
To grant whatever you would crave,
I have wagered both life and land,
Your love and good-will for to have.
    Greensleeves was all my joy
    Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.
    Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu,
To God I pray to prosper thee,
For I am still thy lover true,
Come once again and love me.

Celtic Woman does not do "Greensleeves", Sapphire848. This is Méav as she sings from her beautiful solo cd "Meav: A Celtic Journey". I believe that CW helped promote Méav's album and therefore, many think that it is a CW song. It's only Méav's song. And...believe me, only Méav could sing this gorgeous old ballad the way it should be sung....and she surely has on her solo album. Méav's soothing, calming, comforting, perfectly pitched, angelic voice is truly lovely as she sings her songs...all of them...especially "Greensleeves" and "What Child is This"..the same melody..which Méav sang in the CW concert "Home for Christmas". ...

Now I remain in a world apart
But my heart remains in captivity.

And even so, I still remain
    A lover in captivity.
My men were clothed all in green
And they did ever wait on thee
All this was gallant to be seen
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
Thou couldst desire no earthly thing
but still thou hadst it readily.
Thy music still to play and sing
And yet thou wouldst not love me.
Well, I will pray to God on high
that thou my constancy mayst see
And that yet once before I die
Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me.

There is a persistent belief that Greensleeves was composed by Henry VIII for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn. Boleyn allegedly rejected King Henry's attempts to seduce her and this rejection may be referred to in the song when the writer's love "cast me off discourteously". However, Henry did not compose "Greensleeves", which is probably Elizabethan in origin and is based on an Italian style of composition that did not reach England until after his death.

It's very hard for somebody to make my jaw drop. Near to the end of this song I noticed that my mouth was wide open. I heard lots of performances of this song, but this lady is absolutely amazing..
p.s. I don't understand why do you award this song to the whole Celtic Women band if it's the performance of Meav Ni Mhaolchatha only.
p.s.2 BTW, Irish people, I like your music but I hate your spelling. I spent a whole evening to find out how to pronounce this name. I was lucky, I found an interview where Meav Ni Mhaolchatha pronounced her own name (sounds something like Wa:lkaha).

Meav has that effect on many. Besides her pure, gorgeous voice, she is also so expressive. A true artist with her vocal chords.

+Whoof Whoof Thank you very much for your compliment here for Meav...I've just sent your kind comment to her....I'm sure that Meav appreciates your kindness in saying that "this lady is absolutely amazing"....thank you. The banner you see here was made by one of the CW followers when Meav was singing with Celtic Woman and therefore labeled "Celtic Woman"...If you go to Meav's fansite, you will learn how to correctly pronounce Mhaolchatha...celticmeav.com/

"¡cosas veredes, Sancho!"

Such a ravishing song! And Méav Ní Mhaolchatha is great.
The same melody has been used for "What Child Is This?", a Christmas song, has it not?
    Thank you for uploading it.

Actually that is one interpretation yes, an alternate one was that Lady Green Sleeves was mistaken as one through her costume. Thus her "discourteous" rejection of the noble's/singer's advances; this supports that she was not a lady of the night.
Another one is in Nevill Coghill's translation of The Canturbury Tales, in which he explains that "green" back then was the color of lightness in love. This is supported in the lines 'Greensleeves is my delight' as well as other lines in the song.

I had sang this version, and the interments do not change with the singer. I sang this in a trio, a friend played a wooden flute, and another piano, and I sang.

If that is true, well, I have a few green sleeves myself! That is really interesting; when I listen to this all I can think of is Anne from The Tudors! Its like it was written for her!
