I took my oldest son to see KISS and Aerosmith on their co-headline tour. KISS came on first. After Aerosmith played 5 songs, my son asked if we could leave. He said Aerosmith was boring! 😂😂😂😂
The boys in Sabbath must not have learned their lesson having KISS open for them because just 3 years later, they'd have VanHalen opening up for them.
There's a show business legend that Jerry Van Dyke once heard Ed Sullivan say, "Grab your banjo kid, you're on after Hendrix." Imagine following Jimi Hendrix with a banjo act 😮
Hendrix was never on ed Sullivan
Jimi Hendrix hated opening for the Monkeys on his 1st tour
@@robertserafin-uc3qn Hendrix wasn't a hater. The Monkees tour put him up there in the international spotlight and created publicity everywhere. And it wasn't his first tour.
@@johnwattdotca Hendrix was already in the international spotlight after Monterey. All he got opening for the Monkees were throngs of teenage girls who screamed for Davy Jones throughout his entire set.
Yet another idiot believing nonsense. Are you a Trumper?
visually yes Kiss blew Sabbath away. But musically they were two different types of bands. Kiss being good time heavy rock, and Sabbath being doom metal. Can't compare them
It's no good without the music. All the makeup & pyrotechnics in the world can't make terrible music sound good
I saw Kiss 12 or 13 times over the years. No one pumps you up as much. Closest would be Alice Cooper with Nita Straus I’ve seen Zepplin. Boston Ozzy and many more
Kiss was The Show
I'll never understand it, all of the other artists you mentioned are at least a thousand times better than kiss. I'll never understand why people like you like them so much. I think you like the show, and you don't really care that much about the music. You can't possibly, the music is objectively weak.
@@matthewatwood8641 They haven't had a good song in 30 years
You're right...a show, not a concert. The music didn't blow you away, the special effects did.
@@chrisnash430 they haven't had a good song
@@matthewatwood8641 if I want to listen to music, I buy the music. ALL concerts, the music suffers and is not as good. You go to a concert for the show and to be entertained. And no group gave a better show than KISS!!! Only Boston came close to duplicating their sound on concert. Not much show though
Kiss are not the first to put on a stage show, they all went to watch Alice Cooper at Madison Square Garden
That's when they realize that they didn't actually have to be good at making music, they could just have fire and explosions and makeup and people would overlook how terrible their music was
I wondered if everyone forgot Alice Cooper!!
@@gsstrings339 Alice Cooper put on one hell of a show. Best stage show I ever saw.
Saw Alice on his 74th Birthday 16 months ago. He still kicks butt!!!!
They had great music
People today take big rock show productions for granted, I can only imagine what people in the 70s were thinking seeing Kiss in the early days.
It was great
I was 10 years old when KISS Alive was released and remember thinking how outrageous that album cover and their outfits were.
Kiss was my first concert in 1979. Way different times, huge speakers on stage, loud AF.
It was a lot more entertaining than being stuck on a crowd listening to a 45 minute
guitar solo!
Like those on records at home but except for a few songs Kiss didn't cut the mustard there musically.
It was awesome, saw them in 1976.
No, let’s not have KISS open for us. How about this new upcoming band called Van Halen?
Kiss took it to another level..
Yup. Can't be denied. Love 'em or hate 'em, but they changed rock concerts forever!
Seen Kiss in 75. Styx was the back up band. Kiss blew all of us away. The flames were so big you felt the heat. Ticket was $5.00
I miss those days and ticket prices!!! Led Zeppelin’s tickets cost me $12
I'll listen to TWO TIMER, ROCK BOTTOM , BLACK DIAMOND or DEUCE.......way before listening to COME SAIL AWAY, LORALEI , MR.ROBOTO, OR SING FOR THE DAY !!!!
$5.00 in 1975 = $29.19 in 2024
I saw Van Halen in 1980 (after Women & Children First was released) for 6 dollars. I said 6 dollars. I was right up at the stage.
BTW, the opening act was Talis. If you don’t know the rest of the history between VH (especially Roth) and their bassist Billy Sheehan, look it up. I had never heard of them, and he had long blond curly hair, a shoulder strap with cool flashing red lights, was kicking his crazy legs all over the stage while often playing with the fret hand over instead of under the fret. He was tapping also, and I thought “Wow, he’s playing the bass like Eddie plays the guitar.” I had no idea I WAS watching the EVH of the bass.
Saw Kiss in 75, actually.
I love both Black Sabbath and Kiss but I remember seeing Kiss for the first time in 1974 and our minds were blown simply because we'd never seen anything like that before. Kiss truly was a game changer.
me too - all the pyro and heavy riffs. Never looked back.
WAS.
Not musically, that's for sure.
Kiss was a joke, a total gimmick band. The only way they made it was by wearing that weird makeup and the show. They sure could not play.
I saw KISS open for the New York Dolls in June 1974. Great show.
Comparing Kiss to Bl.Sabbath is like comparing poop to Gourmet food.
*Sabbath fan
I would have never guessed lol
Lol then in 1978 they had Van Halen open for them! 🤣
Everyone open for Black Sabbath. The greatest band ever!! They created Metal!! And this emoji 🤘. Rock on 🎸
KISS may have been the first with pyrotechnics, but Alice Cooper was doing theatrics several years before KISS.
I saw Van Halen level Sabbath on the Technical Ecstasy tour. It was Uriah Heep that got torched by KISS in these parts. Opened for Heep in Indianapolis, Mick Box arm in a cast Return to Fantasy tour, by the time they hit Ft Wayne KISS was headlining and that never changed!
I saw the same tour in ‘78. To be honest Van Halen would have smoked any band. They were shit hot touring their first album and Edward was unreal.
Wasn't Alice Cooper the first big production band?
Don't mention that because then kiss won't be able to take credit.
I saw Alice open for Sabbath in 1971...Love it to Death tour....mind blowing!
Screaming Lord Sutch. This is where Cooper got his idea from
He was huge also, but he didn't have the over the top fire and lazers , and lights.....at this time Alice Cooper dumped his original band and Welcome to My Nightmare came out and it was a huge production,,,,,don't worry , Alice was probably the biggest in 1975....It basically was Alkice...KISS....and TRIUMPH from Canada that started the big Productions...and maybe Pink Floyd and The WHO , somewhat !!!!
Thanks for the video Bob. :)
I dunno..There were no virtuosos in Kiss. But Paul could sing. Ace was a dude. Paul and Ace’s guitar harmonies hit the spot. Each member brought something to make their ‘sound’. They had their moments, check out their live concerts in late 70’s they were pretty legit and rocking in that era.
Black Sabbath has been my favorite band since they came out and I’m all about the musicians not the pyrotechnics
Yes, but Kiss had both ….pyrotechnics and kick ass musicianship.
@@moisesgonzalez1285 Kickass musicianship? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

How rude of Geezer to not take your personal taste into consideration before mentioning his experience 😯It would certainly have added zero value to the video, but @robstimson4234's ego is important and everyone needs to know he doesn't like any KISS records! This is what he looks like -> 🤡

On the same tour, Ozzy expressed shock at the groupies lined up waiting to be serviced by the KISS members.
After 1975, KISS never was a backup....always the Headliner !!!!
And they still sucked.
@@matthewatwood8641 Because you went to see them or you follow the herd??
@@matthewatwood8641 at least they had real singing back then....no fake vocals from Paul.
Kiss sucks. Total gimmick band. They sure could not play and their songs sucked too.
And after 83 every band that opened for them WAS BETTER
I can well imagine everyone was shocked 😲
I think the shock was worse having Van Halen open up for them.
Remember, Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees on a tour. All the screaming 13 year old girls didn't even know who he was.
He flipped the crowd off and walked off stage
@@classicrockandcountry What kind of life are you living? Get real.
@@johnwattdotcahe did after a few shows. The kids were 100% not interested
Well, one should remember that Alice Cooper had their own stage show. Maybe they didn't breath fire, of have explosives, or pyrotechnics, but almost every song Alice Cooper performed back then had some sort of theatrical schtick or gimmick. And, I'm not sure if this counts as "Pyrotechnics" or anything related, but Arthur Brown used to literally wear a crown of fire on his head during live performances. And don't even get me started on Screaming Jay Hawkins, or Screaming Lord Sutch, or even Jerry Lee Lewis who literally used to set his piano on fire during his performances. Of course, a lot of this might pale in comparison to KISS, but I've seen both KISS AND Alice Cooper, and there's a very good reason why they've never been on the same bill.
KISS stole their makeup AND pyro ideas from Crazy World of Arthur Brown!
@@aliceborealiseverything they did was mimicry, they didn't innovate anything.
im sure theres a famous opera that set the theatre on fire with cannons...
I never understood the "KISS is just a gimmick" thing .. a gimmick lasts what, 6 months at best ?? .. Millions of people still listen to those great songs 50 years later .. Either way, it is rock and roll ... You want musicianship, listen to The Mahavishnu Orchestra or Return To Forever.. . As far as Black Sabbath, the same thing happened to them three years later when EVH and his band opened for them ..
Kiss could not touch Sabbath - Kiss was 75% gimmick with 3 chord rock songs .... Sabbath invented metal, Kiss invented nothing, Ace Frehley could barely play the guitar and has only gotten worse and I'm a kiss fan but lets be honest about this. Also Sabbath spawn Dio and Ozzy and many others while Kiss spawn Vinnie Vincent and the like LOL.
He forgot about Alice Cooper? KISS were just 4 Alice Coopers when they started out
They took it to the next level
Sabbath are the greatest band of all time. As far as Kiss is concerned I’d rather go to Barnum and Bailey. That way I’d get the circus without the bubblegum music.
I've heard Ozzy was more impressed with the lines of girlies outside Kiss' hotel rooms.
Whose kiss? Black Sabbath is the best band of all time.
Geezer is an absolute legend.
There is no way, I would ever walk out on Sabbath.
Sabbath kicks ass.
Arthur Brown & Sabbath stated this whole theatrical rock deal.
Art Brown was a gyrating lunatic. My grandparents thought he was satan in the flesh & the world was ending.
Black Sabbath made music that sounded way scarier than scary movies.
Alice Cooper started bringing it to the next level & while Gene looked scary, Kiss took fun, party songs & added another level.
It was such a superb natural progression.
You couldn’t plan anything out, this good.
Sabbath is the father of this whole gig.
Good point
Same as 1976 when I saw ACDC open for a haggard version of Aerosmith. They never had a chance
Alice Cooper was the original theatrical rock & roll band not Kiss.
In August 1975, KISS supported Black Sabbath for three dates on their Sabotage tour.
Before Alive was released ! (September 10, 1975) Unknown at the time.
Remember when kiss scared Christians??
and the feminists
Knights in Satan's Service
Went and saw them in 2019 and preacher was outside still preaching against them
No real Christian is afraid of a Jew.
I’ll take Sabbath’s musical chops vs. Kiss’ any time..
Sabbath has aged better than kiss has
I'm a fan of both bands. Kiss and Alice Cooper both changed concerts from just a performance to a show. Every sense got assaulted. Bands that couldn't up their game got left behind. Sabbath had a habit in the back half of the Ozzy years of being upstaged by their openers , Kiss, AC/DC, and Van Halen. Ozzy solo got the shock of his life when Metallica came out and gave him a run for his money. (his words not mine) .
The first big touring band I ever saw was Black Sabbath Mob Rules tour. They had an opening band called Wrabit. They came out and "plugged in" and played as everyone sat down. Sabbath came out to lights and pyro and no one used their seat. Guess they learned their lesson.
Totally ridiculous - nobody would walk out on Sabbath after Kiss, which , comparatively, was bubblegum …
BooHoo
Bubblegum fired from a cannon.
Black Sabbath was one of the greatest bands there ever was. Of course, no one would walk out just because KISS put on a better show. KISS took a crap in the 1980's but in heavy rock, they held their own with anyone in the 1970's. I'm not a musician & can't say how hard or technical their music was to play but, I know that their music itself gave me just as much pleasure as anyone else during the 1970's.
@@richardthompson6366Great line!
@@richardthompson6366 Is still bubblegum.
I saw KISS open for Sabbath in Providence in August of '75
KISS was phenomenal.
When KISS was done and the house lights came on, the crowd booed.
No teenyboppers in the crowd.
KISS was fun for about 4 years
That was it
They don't start every show with, "You wanted the best, you got the best ".for nothing. Truly two great bands in their on respects.
They're definitely not the best. Heavy promotion and a big spectacular stage show to sell crappy music
I like the best of the best of classic rock in prog rock, eclectic stock, alternative music of the 80s and 90s, etc.
If nothing else, the first four or six kiss albums are pretty damn decent rock albums if not great
Signing off, a 50 year old who discovered Kiss when they were 17 years old and it was the first album that got me into them
It was a long time dream realized when I saw Kiss perform in Munich, West Germany in 1980. The opening act was a band I had never heard of previously: Iron Maiden.
That's because Sabbath had a million more times the talent, and didn't need all the window dressing. In fact, when I saw the title of this video, I thought it was going to be Geezer's shock at how crappy Kiss was.
kiss was always a children's band. all show, no go.
Sabbath on the other hand created an entire genre.
exactly!!!!!!
Without their clown suits and fire, kiss would have never existed as a band. Their music is horrible and boring.
They proved this in the 80’s when they went without their makeup for a few years. Man ,it was insufferable .
WEII SAID!!!
No offense to Kiss fans but I'm surprised Geezer was intimidated by Kiss. Black Sabbath's music surpasses Kiss' theatrics.
Agree, Sabbath's music was the stage show, you didn't need anything else to back it up.
Love short to the point videos.
It all depends what you want in a concert. Kiss put on a helluva a stage show, but they are no way near the musicians Black Sabbath were.
If you want to show, go to vegas. Bowie and Alice cooper, and a bunch of other bands did stage shows an elaborate costumes and stuff, but they came with the music. The music they made was legendary. Kisses music was just playing
@@matthewatwood8641Kiss sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
@@josephrusso7069 that doesn't make their music good, it just makes it popular. I'm a street musician, I've heard many street musicians who are way better than anybody in kiss could ever hope to be

Alice Cooper; The Crazy world of Arthur Brown did alot of strange things with theatrics before KISS~ Kiss took it one step further than alot of bands.

KISS !!!! # 1 🤘🤘🤘
So they went from being blown offstage by Kiss to being blown offstage by Van Halen 3 years later. I heard that's why they booted Ozzy. However, being the headliner, they got the lion's share of the earnings.
Kiss is one of the most taken for granted bands ever. I would have loved to have seen them in the 1970s.
Do not think that I am denying about Paul and Jean kind of being A-holes.
Well if it's 1975 I'm definitely not walking out on Sabbath.
I’ve seen Sabbath in the 70s. They kicked ass. I’m sorry but I’ve never went to a concert to see theatrics .
Early Sabbath concerts were intense. I’m talking Fairies Wear Boots followed by Into the Void followed by Snowblind followed by The Wizard. One epic song after the next. A real mind ripper. They were great on their final tour in 2016 as well. Iommi’s Laney stack was city leveling.
The Demon and his tongue outshined the grandfathers of heavy metal. Imagine having to follow Van Halen on the same concert billing? Black Sabbath also had to do that a few years later.
Saw VH open for Sabbath in 78. They were hungry and broke. It showed. Blew the bloated Sabs off the stage
Geddy Lee said that they (Rush) learned how to put on a show from opening for KISS. He said KISS was going to give you your money’s worth. I’m a Rush not a KISS fan.
A fan of both bands here. One thing I'll give KISS credit for, they didn't shy away from booking good bands for opening acts, and unlike some other headliners they didn't try to sabotage the opening bands to make themselves look better.
@@butchs.4239Aerosmith
Astonishing as a 9 year old and upon turning 12 it was over. Feeling the heat from the flames still inspires my inner fire
actually, sabbath played a show with the huge KISS logo still shining above them.
Kiss may or may not be your type of music, but you gotta admit, their plan for taking over in music entertainment was smart, & calculated!
great shirt, see you there!
The funny thing is that Alice Cooper did so many theatrical stunts or gimmicks but never did pyrotechnics and Kiss did. I saw Sabbath in 74 and they and their stage were BlackLight and that was a trip. Bu in the end it is about the music. And I can't believe that Kiss as tight as they were getting and Sabbath as Snowblind as they were getting still didn't wipe the floor with Kiss musically.
I love them both. Kiss got me into sabbath. Without one I wouldn’t have found the other. Their early stuff like she, parasite, 100 000 years, was heavy. Not sabs heavy, but still powerful. They had some great songs.
That’s why KISS is the Biggest Show Band in Rock History!!!!!
At least KISS never felt intimidated by having bands that were great open for them .
Iron Butterfly refused to play after Led Zeppelin, When they opened up for them at Fillmore West in San Francisco 1969
Sabbath = talent. Kiss = limited talent. Pink Floyd were years ahead of Kiss in stage/screen theatrics.

I saw Kiss on the Dynasty tour. The last tour with all the original members.
Wish I had seen Black Sabbath!
Reunion tour was pretty awesome
I know they didn't like to follow VH but who would? 🤓😎✌🏼
Kiss definitely raised the bar regarding performances. They aren't the only opening act to overshadow the headliner. Who would want to follow Elvis?
No way Kiss of 75 overshadowed Sabbath - pyrotechnics and costumes maybe …I guess you think Kiss would have outshined Lynerd Skynerd , who didn’t do dress up or smoke bombs either .
I was like 14 when the ALIVE lp came out, but I also had PARANOID in the milk crate.. never saw either band live but KISS had some pretty rocking stuff doing bong hits
thats funny. i love both bands. i remember gene claiming he freaked geezer out by greeting him w his stage persona.
Love your shirt!
When did audition your opening act, to make sure it's suited to your show and not upstaging it, become rocket science?
Bless Sabbath's souls, they gave Kiss and Van Halen opening gigs and got hit. Sabbath rules.
Sabbath was and still is a thousand times the band Kiss was or ever could be. Better musicians, better vocals, better songs and a better legacy. Kiss needed an amazing show to compensate for all the rest.
I saw KISS “open” for Aerosmith. It reminded me of being in a Mexican restaurant when they’re like “You want some more chips”, and I’m like yeah, and then I don’t eat any of the new basket of chips 😐.
Alice Cooper had greater production in 1975. Welcome to my Nightmare tour.
Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire at the end of his set at (I think) Montrose Music Festival, letting it feed back into the night. The Who were up next and wondered how they could do better than that. So they smashed ALL of their instruments.
To all the ones hating on KISS’s actual music I suggest you go back take another listen to it. KISS has some of the most iconic rock songs such as Cold Gin, Deuce , Shout It Out Loud, Strutter, Parasite, Room Service, FireHouse , Dr Love and I would also recommend Creatures Of The Night that whole damn album still rocks. I could go on and on . Sorry haters but y’all are wrong as hell

It's a generational thing. By the mid 70s everybody had enough of the bands that have come in the previous five or so years, as good as they were. The younger generation wanted change they wanted something of their own. I'm not particularly partial to the music of Kiss I thought Humble Pie and Grand Funk played much better rock and roll but Kiss took life performance to the next level and that's what people wanted.
lol no! nobody who went to see Black Sabbath walks out of a Black Sabbath show after KISS, that's just dumb!
I went to the Kiss/Aerosmith tour a while back and couldn’t believe kiss went first. I love Aerosmith, but I couldn’t help but feel bored to tears when they went on.
I'd see Black Sabbath with their music over KISS with theatrics any day. Walking out? LOL!
Makes sense since Kiss were Shock Rock.
Back in the day, your $7.50 ticket was expensive. Better get you bucks worth of a show.
I do not and have not ever understood the appeal of KISS. How they got so popular being SO mediocre will forever mystify me.
I'd never walk out Sabbath I saw Van Halen absolutely steal the show in Philly in 78 ans stayed for Sabbath
Like it matters today musically speaking . I dont think so . Too many bands charging stupid money for tickets and then cant even perform anywhere like they once did . Backing tracks , hidden players and singers etc . Fans still shelling out the bucks . Guess theyre desperate for anything and willing to pay . 😂
Kiss put on one hell of a show but their actual music and songwriting skills was their weak point.
Kiss is more about being magicians on stage instead of musicians.
What goes around comes around. Kiss had ACDC open for them on a tour. It'd be hard not to sound weak if you had to follow ACDC.
